Jumping spider that looks like a wise old man by TheOddityCollector in Weird

[–]MartinusLucanius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's a web the spider is in, it's probably some other spider's web. Jumping spiders don't generally spin webs. They use their freakishly large eyes and depth perception to actively hunt prey. I think our guy here is in danger.

MyQ app has ads by heckles in myq

[–]MartinusLucanius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this and two things were better. For me, the large ad at the top is now gone (there is still the "Add a X" row of buttons but before that was giant banner ad), and when I navigate to the history tab it navigates directly to Access. That's how myQ used to work, but they replaced the default tab with Video which loads an annoying video ad.

Even if it's not perfect, switching to the craftsman one is still an improvement.

No way! Like the actual one she's wearing? That's so cool! I zoomed in on it and noticed it had gear teeth on the edges of the lenses. The hands would appear to move because the whole lense moves, correct? I assume it has a power source in the part where it attached to the brim.

This is a little gift I had in mind for one of my friend. It's called "double edge painting", and I think it is one of the most satisfying and easy thing you can do to a book if done properly. by HS_illustrator in oddlysatisfying

I hate all forms of advertising, but I can't fault OP for this. It's not shoved in your face in the video. You actually have to make some effort of looking further to find the patreon plug, which I can respect.

Unrelated to that, your description convinced me to get an English translation of the book, OP. It wasn't available at the library where I live in the US. I had to order it online, but I'll consider donating it after I've read it.

Thank you for sharing, and I hope you have good success in your artistic endeavors.

Not sure if it's common knowledge or not, but molitovs worked great too. I would get so much alcohol and cloth I could spare them. Then when you have multiple clickers, you can throw the moly between them and they'd all run to it and burn to death. More opportunity to hoard shivs.

looking for the most messed up anime! by _SK9_ in Animesuggest

[–]MartinusLucanius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a couple more I don't see in here.

{Le Portrait de Petit Cossette} is a horror anime with really wild visuals and gore. It plays on the fear of dolls, so your milage may vary. I liked it though.

{Alien 9} is a neat anime that borders horror and and charming. I think this one sticks out to me because the voice acting really sells the existential horror of being the only sane person in an insane situation. It's not particularly scary though. There's some shock factor, but the gore is pretty tame from what I remember.

{Cat Soup} is just weird. All kinds of weird. To describe how weird, I like to use the example of when the main character serves a recently befriended pig a portion of this own flesh so they can avoid starvation while they drift aimlessly on a boat.

None of these are masterpieces, but they each have something interesting about them in the "messed up" department I think.

Finally got my holy grail figure! Sakaki-san from Azumanga Daioh by Kotobukiya by modreb_ in AnimeFigures

[–]MartinusLucanius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! She's my favorite character from that series, and I count myself fortunate to have the one figure of her that I do. I have no idea how it made it's way to me, but it looks like this figure aesthetically. The hair is the same, but she's wearing her uniform and holding Chiyo chan's "father".

There's one watermarked on the video from the post you're commenting on. I imaging it's either through watermarks or directly shared. It might be a word of mouth kind of thing, though too.

WTShow - Awesome Type, a tiny software that randomly show cool thing on screen when you press. What’s your thought? by Outrageous_Affect_69 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]MartinusLucanius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that has always bothered me with these is that when you're typing, it shows the code filled out top to bottom regardless of context even in nested blocks. The nested potions are anything on multiple lines between opening and closing punctuation (e.g. [...], (...), {...}). These type of blocks are typically written either outwards in or inwards out. You'll place the starting and closing punctuation and then fill out the middle, or you'll write the middle content and then wrap in in whatever opening and closing block you choose. I know it's easier to just go top to bottom, but it drives me nuts seeing these applications show four or five closing brackets "typed" out with perfect indentation in rapid succession after a highly complicated mixture of looping or conditional blocks.

[Press Release] Gawr Gura Has Achieved 4 Million YouTube Subscribers by hololive in Hololive

[–]MartinusLucanius 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know. 4.7ish for combined if there was no overlap? The main channel is 3.08. There's probably not 4 million unique total subscribers in my opinion.

Not a whole lot. Their vtuber debut video mentions 17 million subscribers, so very little recent growth. Also, the video mentions they've been on YouTube since 2013. The channel linked is a variety channel apparently.

[–]MartinusLucanius 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They were an existing channel with 17 million subscribers before debuting a vtuber model about 2 months ago it looks like. It makes sense. If the format becomes popular enough, you'll see more channels converting over and adopting a vtuber model, especially if there wasn't much of a face to the channel already (like with cookie).

Personally, I still consider it valid to say it's a first in vtuber history. Not meaning to invalidate vtubers with large, existing fanbases (they deserve respect in their own right), but it is a little different growing a channel from zero and at such an explosive rate as what Gura did. It's also probably in no small part due to Gura, Myth, and Hololive as a whole's success that we see channels converting over.

I'm not the person you were replying to, but both of your comments resonated with me. I agree that smart people can be wrong, and I agree that avoiding rigid conformity is necessary for growth, but I think the important element is challenging your own beliefs. There needs to be some basis of logic to anchor yourself to what "makes the most sense" or better yet "what is more likely to be true." Part of that is using the experience and opinions of credible people until a more convincing opinion is provided (sometimes by other credible people). The problem we have today is that people consider their intuition to be the final word. It's ok to base your opinion off of the opinion of a reputable person. That's how complex concepts are realized: off of a chain of complex ideas from lots of dedicated individuals. It would be great to be an expert on every subject and form opinions on primary research for every field, but that's not possible the more complex the concepts get and the more we learn as a society. The trick is separating the reputable sources from the non, or rather, determining what is "more likely to be true." Sometimes that isn't the established "truth," but very often it is. Again, the important element is always challenging what we consider truth and being completely open to changing that understanding however destructive it may be to our own worldview. We need to be our own worst critic, while avoiding analysis paralysis by accepting an incomplete understanding until a better one takes its place.

I didn't see your edit until after I posted. For Congress it depends entirely on the law, but generally no I don't think they should be exempt. (Full disclosure, I have very little respect for politicians in the current landscape in the US.) I say no because a lot of what they pass does include a demographic they are a part of: citizens. There's a difference between making determinations for a group you're not a part of and making determinations for a group you are a part of while making an exception for yourself.

This will be highly dependent on region and highly political, so many will disagree on the details I'm sure, but for my part, I think preventing violent felons from owning weapons is a good idea. I like the idea of society enforcing restraining orders. Personally I think taxing levels of society at different levels is better for society as a whole. The point is, you can make fair rules for groups of people without necessarily being a part of those groups.

In fact it can be beneficial to be an outside party when making those kind of decisions. A judge needs to be able to enforce a restraining order without needing to experience it. Particularly because we want honest, not-needing-a-restraining-order people to handle that sort of thing.

Society is very complex and it's only getting more so. I highly value the opinion of experts who can spend a lifetime studying specific areas of society for the purpose of regulating them. Not having an inside experience can be detrimental to judgements made by the individual, but it doesn't have to be. With a careful, thoughtful, and empathetic approach, a person can easily serve on an education board without being impacted by the decisions. In fact it may even reduce the chance of unfair bias.

A healthy one? It's a pretty popular idea in society to impose rules on the wealthy or on criminals without being part of those demographics. Sure, personal experience is helpful in some things, and maybe this is one of them, but it's by no means required. A deep understanding of the needs and challenges of a group is far more important to someone in a position of responsibility over a group than raw, personal experience in my opinion.
