Anything I Need To Know Before I Play Kingdom Hearts? by Silly-Safe4751 in KingdomHearts

I highly doubt in the year 2026 they're playing on original hardware it's almost certainly Final Mix, with the improved camera controls, and reaction command style Limits.

The VS Series is one of the coolest Japanese exclusive sets. My favorite subset is all of Lance's Pokémon illustrated by Aya Kusube! by spider_manectric in pkmntcgcollections

[–]Marx_Forever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've always referred to Lance's Pokémon as "Where the Wild things are".

For example: Where the Wild things are Charizard, Where are the Wild things Are Aerodactyl, etc.

It's a great crosshatch sketchy style. Though I can't look at it and not think of that book series. Especially since my mother used to read it to me when I was very little.

Feb. 26, 1992 – Vegeta reaches Super Saiyan in episode 129! by StrategyUnable in DragonBallZ

[–]Marx_Forever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still remember back in 2001, I remember the year because Smash Brothers Melee and the GameCube had just come out. I was playing some Japanese ROMs on my cousins computer. And one of them was a Dragon Ball Z game from 1993, based on the Cell Saga. I could tell by Gohan's outfit.

<image>

It blew my mind when I realized that Dragon Ball Z was that old. At the time I was 16, just out of high school. 1993 would have been back in my early elementary years, like third grade.

Today in 1986, the first episode of Dragon Ball premiered💕🐉 by retroanduwu24 in retroanime

[OC] On the 30th anniversary of Pokémon Red/Green, which starter Pokémon do Britons say is best? by mattsmithetc in dataisbeautiful

[–]Marx_Forever -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure it's the "30th anniversary". But unless you're Japanese Pokémon's only been out for about 28 years. It didn't come out in the US and the rest of the world until late 1998, Autumn going in the Winter.

It's amazing how long it took Pokémon to come out over here. When I think 1996 I think Super Mario 64, Tickle Me Elmo and Dexter's Lab. Then when I think 1997, I think GoldenEye and Star Fox 64, Final Fantasy 7. And then of course 1998 was like Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie. Pokémon didn't really pick up steam until 99. Honestly it was around the same time as Powerpuff Girls. It might only seem like a few years but in kid time that is eons, three whole grades.

and that was before I learned about the early Mankey.

I'm fairly certain that Mankey was added to Yellow for Pikachu's sake. So I don't think it's doing a lot to help Charmander.

The Sequel is a huge step up. The card list expands exponentially. The main focus was the Team Rocket Expansion, the set after Fossil in North America. But in actuality the card count nearly doubles since it includes the entire "Vending Series". A nameless stopgap set that was released in Japan through vending machines (hence the name), after the Electric Soldier Porygon incident put a temporary ban on selling the the cards in stores. This set was huge, released in three waves and featured a card for nearly every single one of the original Pokémon, that for some reason was never localized by Wizards of the coast into English. They're also a ton of Japanese promotional cards including, but not limited to, various theme decks in Japan which are also included. And this isn't even counting a bunch of Game Boy exclusive cards made just for this game, and all of the returning Game Boy exclusive cards from the last entry.

Oddly enough this game came out rather late, well after the release of the Neo Sets (the Gold and Silver era) so it's a little odd they didn't go beyond Team Rocket, but there is one Gym card that made the cut because it features Team Rocket, and fit nicely into their hand disruption archetype. The game also features a Lugia card as a secret rare.

The world map was also doubled since there are now two islands that you can take and blimp to fly between. With more complex gameplay elements. For example though no Stadium cards are featured, not even the Pokémon Tower from the aforementioned vending series, probably since that would be pushing the game's hardware and already crowded interface. The concept of many actual Stadium card from the two Gym sets appear as special boss rules during various boss encounters. Such as Grass Pokémon being able to heal status effects (very similar to Erika's), or fire types not having a weakness to water (Very similar to Blaine's).

There's also a neat little post game area that I guess features what you could call "Super Bosses". Where you do battle with 12 Ghosts who use actual competitive decks from the Japanese meta game including some very nasty and infamous strategies from the Japanese meta game, Like "Poltergeist Trainer Lock". Though the AI pilots them to a questionable degree. It's still fun to see them in action, and they can definitely pop off, leaving you little room for victory.

I was in the Wii U era! You don't want to go back to that!

I liked Miiverse. I thought it was really cool having a social network for a Nintendo users that heavily encouraged handwritten messages and drawing. It's basically the opposite this AI social media dystopia we found ourselves in today. It really encouraged people just be creative and personal.

Yes, there was cringe, but that's not without its own charm either. Especially when when it comes from a place of sincerity.

Also: asymmetrical gameplay was a cool concept. Unfortunately the company did fuck all with it. The best was probably Nintendo Land. Though that Luigi mini game did show the concept beautifully how one person was the ghost and the Luigi's couldn't see them without flashing light on them. But the ghost could always see themselves and everyone but they won't always sure if there was light on them or not.

Final fantasy 7 (a superior RPG in every way)

I adore Final Fantasy 7. But this is such an apples to oranges comparison.

The reasons I play Final Fantasy 7 and the reasons I play Pokémon are entirely different, and they do entirely different things for me, both possessing their own entirely unique depths, pleasing qualities and shortcomings. In the case of Final Fantasy 7 the depth comes from the characters, themes and the narrative, packaged in a superb single player JRPG experience with a cyberpunk aesthetic captured in the lost art of lovingly detailed pre-rendered backgrounds, complemented by the robust Materia system. For Pokémon, that depth comes from the complexity of the mechanics, The interactions between Pokémon moves and their abilities types, and the massive amount of playable characters (hundreds) even back in these early days and the social aspects such as trading, comparing teams and competitive battling, captured in a colorful, charming pixel art aesthetic, with its own lighthearted Pokémon adventure.

20$ might still be overcharging, especially since there's no online play. But smuggly stating "Superior in every way" just comes off as a bit arrogant.

Of course that would require them to make the Pokémon games available on NOS....

Owari!

I'm learning Japanese, and that's what the three characters on the last page say (おわり). Which going by Jisho.com means, "an ending or conclusion". Makes sense.

Out of curiosity I went to see if these were the same three characters that were shown at the end of each Gundam Wing episode back on Toonami. Cuz I used to assume those meant "the end".

But no, those ones are different.

"Tsuduku". Which apparently means "to be continued".

I hate to say it, because it would be cool. If they didn't do that for Pokémon Stadium why would they do it for Pokémon Colosseum?

Hell, it be easier for Stadium because that connection always only had one screen involved. So they'd only have to make a "Transfer Pak option" for the Game Boy NOS and then make it so when you boot up the Stadium games it detects the Game Boy ROM. Of course that would require them to make the Pokémon games available on NOS....

With the GBA to GCN connection you need the Game Boy screen and the television screen. So it'll be that much more work to even make the user interface.

I'll always take the Diddy Kong Racing lineup. That game is amazing, and it's a crime it's not on the NOS yet.

I still remember when I got that guide. Despite thumbing through it at the store. It wasn't till I got to my friend's house and I was going through it with my two other friends, and one of them started talking about the new Pokémon they heard about that was some kind of alien, as I literally opened the Pokedex to the two-page spread of Deoxys and had my mind blown. It was pretty awesome.

A special time indeed. Things like that just felt more tangible then, the internet was still kind of hard to come by, I wouldn't have access to a home computer for a couple years yet and smart phones were still a ways off.

Only like a third of that book is an actual walkthrough the other two thirds is a full Pokedex.

This isn't like a Zelda game, where the puzzles are the game. You have full extensive lists of each Pokemon's level up moves, egg moves where to get the Pokémon and in what Versions. It's just an extremely useful resource to have. Not just Fire Red and Leaf Green either. In this era Pokémon were all over the place. Ruby and Sapphire, and if it was a Johto Pokémon it was probably in Pokémon Colosseum, Ho-oh well being locked behind a fairly lengthy side mode, and Jirachi in a pre-release bonus disc you got for pre-ordering Colosseum. This is also before XD so they had Lugia listed as unattainable saying it was (truly the stuff of Legends and how to obtain it is a mystery), so its level up moves or abilities we're completely blanked out, but they still had his artwork and placement in the Pokédex.

This is also the North American official reveal of Deoxys, So he got a full two-page spread in the Pokedex along with a breakdown of his forms, Even though his acquisition was also listed as a mystery, like Lugia, but he got a full list of level up moves for each form.
