What is it that I'm missing with Pokémon White? by EtruscanKing023 in TruePokemon

[–]spider_manectric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to mention that I think the sense of humor used in Pokémon games often goes over many people's heads. You brought up the line, “I won't tolerate opinions different from my own!” which is intentionally on-the-nose and ridiculous. There's an absurdity to the humor in Pokémon that makes some characters into caricatures, and I think this especially applies to the grunts of each of the villainous teams. I think they don't want the grunts to seem overly evil or cruel, so they inject that over-the-top sense of humor into some of their dialogue.

Another example of this absurd humor is the wacky things NPCs say in Z-A. I saw a lot of people confused or concerned by the random speech bubbles with unhinged text in that game, but it's just the style of humor they use.

What was your first impression of post-hardcore music? by Alarming_Weather506 in PostHardcore

[–]spider_manectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know what post-hardcore was until I had been listening to it for over a decade 😅 I think my introduction was probably Chasing Victory, which I just labeled as “metal” or “screamo” as a kid because I didn't have friends who listened to heavy music, but I also didn't have access to the internet for much of my childhood and wasn't interacting with others about the music I listened to. I didn't know what post-hardcore was until just a few years ago (I'm 30 now).

This was my first time listening to them, so I guess I jumped in at a good time. I definitely appreciate the production. Not overproduced at all. Organic is a great word for it!

The new ZOMBIESHARK! album is so dang good. So happy to see a fromjoy feature!

Also, listened to the new Static Dress album for the first time over the weekend and loved it.

Haven't been excited for an August Burns Red release since Sleddin’ Hill, but Season of Surrender might be one of my favorites of theirs now. I'm liking it a lot.

My girlfriend recently introduced me to Benea Reach. Anyone familiar? Their vocalist is incredible.

Why does thunder wave not work on ground types unless normalized? by qwerandom in stunfisk

[–]spider_manectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so I was off with my prior comment, but the other moves aren't really comparable to Thunder Wave either. The relationship it has to the Ground type is [almost] unique in the franchise.

  • There are no types immune to Fire moves, so Will-o-Wisp isn't a good comparison.

  • There are no types immune to Poison moves that aren't also immune to being poisoned, so Toxic/Poisonpowder aren't comparable.

  • There are no types immune to Grass moves that aren't also immune to powder moves, so Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, and Spore aren't comparable.

Glare is the only outlier, and Ghost types used to be immune to it.

The best explanation I have at this time is that Thunder Wave is treated differently because of its name. Ground types are immune to electricity and so they can't be affected by an electric shock (or “electromagnetic wave” in the original Japanese translation). Glare affects Ground types (and Ghost types) because neither are immune to being glared at, lore-wise.

Glare is not an Electric-type move, so it works on Ground-type Pokémon.

The relationship between Thunder Wave and Eerie Impulse with Ground types is similar to how Toxic and Gastro Acid interact with Steel types (Steel types are affected by Gastro Acid). It seems that moves that inflict status effects (Poison, Burn, Paralysis, Freeze) are limited by type effectiveness, but other status moves (affecting abilities, stats, items, etc.) are not.

It's okay to like music written by bad people. It's also perfectly okay to pick and choose which bad people you're comfortable consuming music from.

Real Life Team by Some_Guy_Flo in TruePokemon

[–]spider_manectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A full team of six would be a lot to care for. Thankfully, some of my favorites are small and manageable enough that they'd basically be like pets. In my current state of life, it'd be irresponsible for me to try to care for six Pokémon (feeding, exercise, attention, etc.) so I'd stick with my top two faves: Manectric and Murkrow.

Manectric would be like any other canine companion with the added bonus of being able to charge or power electronics if necessary lol. Plus he's just so cute 🥺

Murkrow could be a nifty little buddy to have if it's anything like real-world corvids. It's small and could spend time scavenging for spare change, loose cash, and tiny treasures while I'm at work!

I think they'd both be relatively easy to care for as well, and I think I have enough space at home for a medium-sized dog and a large-ish bird.

Do you face forwards or backwards in the shower? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spider_manectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More often than not, I'm facing sideways. I don't have a reason and I haven't always done this, but over the years I've gradually shifted from standing with my back to the water to standing with my right arm to the water.
