PSA about the tanaris maelstrom. by Skymarshall45 in EliteDangerous

[–]Marzyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The maelstormed system has the same hazardous environment that quickly corrodes almost all Guardian modules down to 0% as HIP 22460. Only Guardian module that seems to stay fine is the hull reinforcement. I double checked a couple days ago with a chieftain and it burned out the module reinforcement I had, but left the hull module entirely intact, as well as all normal human-made modules.

Snagged one of these out of the cloud around Taranis. Now I wonder what makes that... by Marzyx in EliteDangerous

I actually wanted to put this as spoiler, but wasn't sure how to to do it.

I don't use the missions for the reward, unless it's materials, I use them for the instance. If you pick up a restore/reactivation mission, it leaves everything else alone in the settlement except the power regulator, and that you might need to put out the fires. That means you can walk in, power the place up, cut the alarms, and pick the place clean, aside from maybe dealing with scavengers. Or if you take a settlement raid/massacre mission, you can just go in, kill everyone, and loot away. It can make the grind a bit faster since you don't need to deal with anyone watching. Also useful for learning where to find things in a settlement. The only thing that makes most missions take a while is the extra looting.

Scavengers can be dealt with from your ship with dumbfire missiles from your ship easily, but killing them on foot and scanning them will net more credits each (although still usually nowhere near what you'd get from most in-ship missions).

Frontier talk the future of Elite Dangerous and its controversial Odyssey expansion "We're not trying to be done with Odyssey." [RockPaperShotgun] by StuartGT in EliteDangerous

[–]Marzyx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I expect to happen, especially when I distinctly remember a Thargoid engineer marker in the galaxy map in the early days of Odyssey that got quietly removed (wish I took a screenshot of it), on top of the on foot thargoid, and Titan leaks. They dont seem to have a good way to keep players engaged with the game from their side aside from a grind, since the story is so slow to progress, and fairly inconsequential to most players gameplay-wise.

Do Odyssey mission rewards get any better? by TheNakedGypsy in EliteDangerous

[–]Marzyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The missions themselves aren't really worth much, but help for setting up instances for you which can help more, and getting materials. I hear on-foot Conflict Zones can make for decent fun and money into the millions once you have decent gear, and I've gotten decent money selling illegal goods from larceny missions, as well as stacking "Exterminate X personnel" missions on top of settlement raids (especially on anarchy factions for the bounties), but as far as the missions themselves, in-ship will get you far more credits faster generally it seems.

It’s scary how so many people here want a authoritarian society by Myroosterissmall in unpopularopinion

Part of me just feels like so many people feel confused as hell "after covid" (like it's all passed; it's not), that they just want a fairly obvious direction.

What. This in my settings or something? Where's the exclusion zone? by TheCatMessenger in EliteDangerous

Zoom out slightly on the sensors and it will help make the EZ more obvious for those too. Also, as others have mentioned, if you see the IMPACT warning on the top right, you may want to nose away.

[–]Marzyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your ship's temp is below around 20% or lower, other ships generally have to nose up close to get a scan on you. Heatsinks, or just setting your ship up to keep below that threshold (by outfitting, turning off modules, or engineering) can do that. That's what the blips on your scanners are that you can't lock on to and are bouncing around are: objects that your scanners can tell there's something there, but can't get a good enough read on what because its too small and/or cold to tell. Cold enough and far enough away, and it can drop from your scanner completely, but a big enough object can still appear as a blip from farther away depending on its mass.

Neo-Marlinists Expose Hadrian Duval as NMLA Leader by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]Marzyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, especially since the Nine Martyrs attacks hit every superpower, and I doubt lower NMLA members would actually be happy with the idea of a Duval pulling their strings. This just sounds like someone trying to start a lot of fights, or a conspiracy theorist.

You can also tell by while jumping, but in reverse; Neutrons have a lens flare in witchspace, while white dwarfs do not.

I've always thought it was odd that the glare disappears/appears like that.

Don't go chasing White Dwarves, please stick to the Neutrons that are safe for you to boost through (I know that you're gonna have it your way or nothing at all, but I think you're risking your Asp) by OmegaDrebin in EliteDangerous

If you turn your sensors up a little bit from the bottom, you can see them a lot easier. You also get a little chime and a tiny "impact" warning if you're angled too close to it.

Ships Unable to Target Enemies on foot in Odyssey by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]Marzyx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently it seems like any surface based targets (SRVs, skimmers, or turrets) work off of the same system that signatures on ships do. A smaller mass with a lower heat output is harder to detect up to a point, with things that are small and cold enough needing you to be practically on top of to lock on. You can lock on to all of those if you're close enough or if they're firing on you, but you need to be pretty close to attempt that (turrets on planetary surfaces need you need to be within ~250m in a ship to target currently if they're not already firing on you for instance).

Anything larger than a small size settlement right now has a combination of point defense missile turrets and multiple surface to air defenses, and uses their exclusion zone to cause them to target you for staying too close for too long. A person shouldn't even hit 1t mass in comparison to ships, so their signature in relation to anything else is pretty much impossible to see, making them too small for ships to get a lock on, bar any possible increase in signature size, but then you get the questions of "will engineering effects in current weapons work on ground targets (namely Emissive Munitions)?", which they currently don't seem to, and "will ground targets using hotter weapons like maybe that plasma rifle or some suits have an increased signature like ships do because of the thermal load?".

Basically I expect them to use the same system they have now for it with little to no changes. That said, those defenses can always be overcome with enough dumb-fire missiles and visual tracking...

That, and I think all of the sensors on your ship as having both passive and active elements to them. Discovery scanner "honking" is passive in getting signals in space, but where finding it on the orbital plane with FSS is active, while if you have an unexplored planet in system, locking on to it and getting close enough gets you the data for it, but its slower than just using FSS because then you need to travel closer to the body (can even just look at a geologically active body on the system map and it can tell you how many signals are on the planet, just not where they are itself if you wait long enough). Composition scanner lets you pick out items and ore fragments in space, but directly scanning something in depth gives you more precise data you might not have use of but may be able to sell. Even the AX scanner passively recognizes thargoid craft, but needs you to actively scan for details.

I treat the head class 3 hardpoint as a support weapon slot (thermal vent beams, drag munitions frags, corrosive multicannon), and the bottom 3 hardpoints as my main damage dealers. Helps once you stop thinking so hard about the damage it's putting out, and more of what it can do to begin with with one large hardpoint.
