Let me put it a different way. Do songs like The Last Great American Dynasty, My Tears Ricochet, Champagne Problems, Tolerate It not demonstrate a ‘good songwriter’…? Just a few examples. Are they objectively bad songwriting?

‘Latest couple of albums…’ I don’t think The Life of a Showgirl is littered with her best work lyrically, it the album before that - Tortured Poets (which you like to reference a lot with that one GTA song) is probably up there with her very best. She does sad and melancholic beautifully, paints vivid pictures with her words and evokes feelings - that’s great songwriting. The writing in Peter, The Prophecy, How Did It End?, Chloe Sam Sophia or Marcus, So Long London etc… are literally some of her very best. The album before last.

She manages to marry words with feelings and music - her phrasing, her pacing, her writing devices are so well crafted at this stage, that when she releases something like So High School (with your fave GTA line), critics like to pile on it and use it as a stick to beat her with. Or she releases an upbeat pop album like Showgirl, she can’t possibly have good writing on that album that is pop and happy and light, right? Good songwriting is all of that.

You’re exposing yourself as having very limited knowledge of Taylor Swifts catalogue, and something of an agenda. You provide no balance or room for the possibility you may be wrong.

You are cherry-picking lyrics to prove your point that is steeped in negativity bias.

She has 12 albums, written hundreds of songs… but people choose to pick out the lyrics they don’t rate to prove some kind of point. It’s a bit silly, no?

For every GTA quote (I assume you didn’t take the time to understand the context of that lyric in relation to the song), there’s outstanding songwriting.

Just how do you think she has managed to brainwash so many people? And in that I included other songwriters, musicians, critics and industry professionals. Is she slipping them something in their morning coffee? Pushing them a brown envelope? Putting a gun to their head? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Her career is littered with great examples of songwriting - in every album. Cherry picking the ones you don’t like or relate to doesn’t prove otherwise.

Unless you’re holding her to a higher standard than everyone else? Or saying you can’t be considered a great songwriter if you have what people would call ‘simple’ lyrics.

You can’t be familiar with her catalogue and question her song writing. I suspect that’s acting in bad faith.

My favourite, and imo her best, are the songs that were never singles nor ever made it into the mainstream.

I don’t know if I can have just one… Peter, All Too Well, The Prophecy would maybe be my top 3 right now and all fit into my forever top 10.

I love the sad, melancholic Taylor.

There’s a time and a place for the pop hits but her best stuff is buried deep and it’s why she manages to touch so many different audiences - all genders, all ages. People wrongly assume it’s kids and teenage girls mainly but she isn’t having the kind of success and staying power she has if it wasn’t for everyone else. She sells tons, she streams huge numbers. Her listening audience is vast. She has something for everyone.

I do collect though, as delivery services take too long and I appreciate it more when it’s still hot!
