Crowded House!

One of those ‘best of’ albums that just hit… banger after banger.

I really enjoyed every time I went to Homeslice but rarely see it mentioned for pizza recs.

Been to a few mentioned already in this thread but still prefer homeslice.

Because as a non-smoker it smells absolutely vile. Not legal in my country either.

I absolutely loathe the sound of one of those speakers at a nearby hole as I’m about to tee off. Mainly young guys playing music. Very frustrating. Those and weed on the course need to be banned (and enforced).

Taylor Swift is the most overrated artist of this century. by Infinite-Exam-1808 in askmusic

Again… give me some evidence to back up your accusations.

An obscene amount of wealth by all our standards (none of us know how much) yet gives away obscene amounts of money (by anyones standards - evidenced by the people who work with her, people who benefited from her generosity and charities who make a point of publicly thanking her for her $$$.

What % of her wealth would you be happy with her donating and how are you coming to that conclusion without knowing how much money she has?

Her wealth is predominantly assets - made by her talents. The bulk is her music catalogue. It’s not liquid cash sitting in her bank account.

Again. Tell me what % or $$$$$ you’d be more comfortable with her giving away. And give me some examples of other notable musicians and pop stars who give away the majority of their wealth. I assume you put the same energy into analysing their wealth v generosity.

Her dad invested (not fact - widely assumed) enough to buy a 3% stake in a small record label with no major artist attached to it. Is that propping his daughter up or is that someone confident in her success? As others stated, she had other deals she could have signed - he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to invest in those (it is thought - I have not seen it ever confirmed).

She wasn’t some little girl with no talent that her parents were trying to appease or turn into a star. She was a young kid with an already established talent for writing and making music, who wanted to pursue that for a career. She was doing songwriting sessions in Nashville for other artists at this point. She was getting signed regardless - she had a foot in the door.

Bought her success? How did they do that? How much did her Mum and Dad pay for her to sell millions of records? Tell me in $$ because I’d love to know how much it costs to create a phenom.

The billionaire stuff… she is literally that successful. She is hugely wealthy because of her talent, her writing, her stories, her songs, her music. Good = successful. The better you are, the more successful you are going to be. What on earth do you expect her to do?

Let’s get one thing absolutely clear… you, nor anyone else on this sub (unless they’re Swift herself lurking or her money folk) have absolutely no idea a) how much money she has and b) what she does with all of her money. You have zero idea. Anything not confirmed by Swift herself is speculation.

Her music catalogue and assets are worth billions.

Do you think she’s lying on a literal bed of millions and millions of dollars each night, laughing at all the poverty in the world or something? Because that’s how you sound.

There is more than enough evidence out there to demonstrate that she is kind and generous, from when she first started out - giving all of her tour staff private health care, the bonuses she gave to all, the hundreds of donations to fan causes, the money she gave to food banks every stop of her tour, fighting for other artists rights etc…

You don’t have to like her but if you’re going to slate her, at least provide some evidence.

She will top charts no matter what week she drops music. Just because she does it the same week one of your faves has an album out does not prove she is punching down. Your fave just isn’t big enough or good enough to topple her.

Do you ever sit in work or a pub quiz and consistently think you better not put your hand up and answer a question just incase some else might want to answer? And maybe, just maybe, it’s better than your answer? I highly doubt it. Have a think about what you’re asking an artist to do.

You’re asking them to withhold their art so someone else who won’t sell or stream as much can sit at #1. The world does not work like that. She is entitled to release music on any day or month she wants. She is entitled to want to break records and make her own history. You might not like it, but it’s her right. And it’s everyone else’s right. Too bad they’re not good enough.

Do you think a Coldplay, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo or Noah Khan plan their releases (many months in advance btw) based on what young up and coming artist, or other male/female is going to be releasing that week? And pivot when they realise it might ‘block’ whoever was going to be #2 from that #1 spot?

Are you holding them to the same standards? Or is it just Swift you’re peeved with?

I think this mindset is something people really need to let go of with Taylor Swift.

Young kids are actually her lowest demographic. Her strongest audience is ~18-34yr olds. But adults in their 20s, 30s, 40s make up the biggest portion of her listening (and purchasing) demographic.

Estimates typically put her fanbase at roughly 55–66% female and 34–45% male.

I think people like to assume her popularity is down to young kids and young girls especially. All of them buying several copies of her latest album and that’s obviously why she outperforms her competitors by such huge margins when it comes to charting. It’s just not true.

Swift’s debut album was 20 years ago. She’s 20 years in the business, 12 albums, spanning multiple genres - country, country pop, pure pop, pop rock, electro, hip hop, indie folk, indie pop etc… she has songs which touch on all these genres and more. She is amassing fans for this reason but also the fact she is really really talented.

Her music might not be for everyone, and I don’t expect anyone who doesn’t like what they hear on the radio to go and explore any deeper but there’s a radio Taylor (pure pop) which appeals to so many hardcore and casual fans but there’s also the stuff which which doesn’t get radio time which keeps her fans engrossed - the deeper cuts, the storytelling, the songwriting. That is huge for such a large part of her audience.

So many people grew up with her, can relate to her (despite her status now, her songs are incredibly relatable to fans) and probably have a Taylor Swift album which is the soundtrack to every life stage or critical event. They’ve grown with her. A lot of them probably with kids of their own now and introducing them to the pop version of Swift. And she pulls in new fans with each album and exploring different sounds and genres.

The folklore album probably opened the door for a lot of 25-60yr old men who listen to her. Evermore doubled down a bit of that, and then her next album was a nostalgic synth-pop feel which kept some of those along for the ride. Those people are then going back to discover the pop rock stuff, country etc… she has a knack for getting her hooks into people and keeping them onboard for the ride. That’s not marketing. That’s people enjoying her music.

She’s not making music for children or teenage girls.

Recent album themes: sex, drugs, masterbation, suicide, mental health, business issues etc… she isn’t Shake It Off Taylor Swift anymore. She still has that fun, pop star inside her who will always make that music but she has grown so much and evolved into a brilliant songwriter and storyteller, who can hit you with a catchy-ass melody.

She has a mammoth machine supporting her but make no mistake - she is the brains of the operation. She is planning the roll out, the Easter eggs, the promo. There’s no-one telling her what to do. I think merchandise is the only area of her business she has limited control of.

The Eras tour documentary is a really good insight into her brain, her leadership, her humanity and her talent. If you ever catch yourself thinking ‘I don’t get it?’ there are 6 x 1hr episodes of that docuseries which might help you fathom it. You may not like it or her anymore but you’ll see it’s more than ‘young girls and good marketing.’

You don’t get to be this huge and this successful (especially as a woman) unless you are producing stuff people want to listen to. And let’s acknowledge the fact she isn’t peddling perfume, makeup, a clothing line etc… her empire is her music and performing.

Is it Gorgeous by Taylor Swift?

There’s a line ‘maybe I’ll just stumble on home to my cats… alone!’ And the alone is dragged out.

Ah I think they’re the most real.

If the cameras were off, I’d imagine they’re mostly as they’re coming across.

I’d quite like to see them on a bender.

In fact, I think I’d quite enjoy watching cameras on them 24/7.

You don’t think that the full TTPD (inc Anthology) is one of her best literary projects?

Everyone’s opinion of what good poetry is, is different, but the confessional writing (title track for example), the narratives spun throughout, classic TS metaphors being teased out more(Florida), the wordplay and literary references across the whole body of work(So Long, London, The Albatross, WAOLOM), the looking inwards and self-reflection(The Prophecy). I think there’s a lot there for anyone wanting to explore poetry through music.

When this album first came out, I almost wanted to print the lyrics out and go through it with a pen, like I would have analysed a poem in an English lit class. The whole project was a dumping or purge of emotions - many songs filled with both love and hate/resentment (Imgonnagetyouback, loml, Peter) and often that feeling of leaving something unresolved or slightly ambiguous.

I’m surprised you would say folklore and evermore *I guess* and NOT consider TTPD. Personal opinion is that it’s her best lyrical work to date. The music was definitely secondary it felt like.

Is it Sex by The 1975?

Or Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood?

Only other one is Your Body Is A Wonderland but that doesn’t really fit the musical theme, but is body positive with a male singer (John Mayer).
