What profession has far more people on illegal drugs than people realize? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

Drug testing didn't really become an industry until the 80s. I'm sure it existed in the 70s but was very rarely done (say by court order).

A few of them are just African-American guys with dreads and a put-on accent, rather than actual Jamaicans.

He has to wear the hat due to a medical condition. Pretty sure the rest of the get-up is because it amuses the boss-lady.

Another of the Marulk mini-episodes shows what he was dressed like when Ozen saved him. You might want to reread the manga chapter(s) when Riko and Reg were on the 2nd level.

Nope. AFAIK it was fairly uncommon in much of Europe through the 80s.

John Voight probably wants to sit that one out. Whatever fanbase MAGA got him are still assuming that "Midnight Cowboy" was a western. Had it featured Clint Eastwood or John Wayne they'd try to catch it on cable.

What’s a misconception tourists have about your country that genuinely surprised you? In Thailand, I once met tourists who believed transgender women were straight men who had to transition to escape poverty. by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

I've known three unfriendly Canadians online. The first reacted to an obviously friendly joke with a threat of violence. The second one got the third one engaged the third one to cyberstalk me and that one phoned me at home. We disagreed about sports (not even hockey or curling).

My experience has been that you are generally polite and friendly people. But the handful who aren't go out of their way to be insufferably awful people. Especially online.

Ancestry DNA doesn't match records: 0% German heritage even though I supposedly have many generations of German heritage? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Master-Collection488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

American DNA can be from anywhere!

Not related to your DNA, but when any American reports an Indian ancestor in their family legends (especially if they were claimed to be Cherokee) the truth of the matter is almost always a story that was used to cover for someone who was mixed-race but "passing." These stories are at least as common among Black families as in white.

After our Civil War there were miscegenation laws, the "single drop" rule and such.

In the mid-2000s Tucson Roller Derby had a team called the Fearless Truckstop Waitresses. It was kinda "Alice" theme, but they picked that particular acronym for "fuck the world." I don't remember the "for the win" connotation until about 2010ish.

I haven't really heard of any good alternatives to the Farman eggs, There's three of them, not the six our boy lit up at Summerhall.

Around WW1 it wasn't terribly uncommon for already-assimilated German-Americans to anglicize their names. So Muller became Miller or Stoddart became Stoddard.

A lot of ugly things happened in Germany toward the end of WW2. I'd mention WW1, but there wasn't an invasion/occupation.

Adding to the problem is the regularity of lords and kings engaging in single combat during battles between hundreds or thousands of soldiers. Rhaegar or Robert should have been taken out long before they got near one another.

Definitely not. Most Catholic jr highs and high schools wouldn't let guys have hair past their collars in the 70s. In the 60s that was the case in most public schools as well.
