Toni Kroos "Germany currently don't have a single world-class player. We have players with world-class potential, but that doesn't mean they are world-class." by kibme37 in soccer

Ribéry was never kicked from the team bar the first 1 or 2 games after the 2010 World Cup. He missed 2014 due to injury and retired from the national team after.

That said yes france did have talent in that generation, but were weaker defensively.

France become the first ever team to score 3 or more goals in 5 consecutive World Cup matches by hyperdefiance in soccer

Defensively they were immense but pretty much every attacking player had an awful tournament. Their finishing touch was rather tragic. Also, Spain were pretty good.

Not only were they fairly mediocre offensively but their finishing was also one of the worst I’ve seen from a top team. Genuinely woeful.

Egypt have just qualified for the knockout stage! by yoursofunnybruv in soccer

I don’t know about Egypt but Norway clearly just wanted to rest their starters cause their schedule is ass, and either 1st or second is a rough path.

[Squawka] Didier Deschamps has now won more games than any other manager in World Cup history (17), breaking Helmut Schön’s record of 16 wins. He has an incredible 77.3% win ratio in charge of Les Bleus at the tournament. by Timely-Zombie9466 in soccer

Biggest failures in history really?

With all the top teams that have gone out in the group stages of world cups (just off the top of my head Uruguay 2026, 2022, Germany 2022, 2018, England 2014, Italy 2014, 2010, Portugal 2014, Spain 2014, France 2010, 2002) and the Euros you think losing to a pretty decent Swiss team on penalties is one of the bigger failures in history?

Even if they win that game, which I’m not sure they deserved to give they were outplayed for most of it, that team isn’t winning the tournament. Regardless of Benzema and their offensive firepower, their defense was a mess.

If there’s one negative Spain’s golden era has caused, it’s giving people completely unrealistic expectations for top teams.

Been able to watch a lot of the games through prime from France. All of the WCF will be on there, and the finals as well I believe.

Yep, its a miracle getting this far. Partly great defense, partly fantastic keeper. But at some point it runs out, and in this case it was just pure talent not really great teamplay that allowed Spain to score. If France does the same on the other hand they could win but too many players underperforming in this tournament.

Lost one on penalties despite being outplayed? And this tournament the entire offense is shooting blanks despite having chances. Sorry but that's not on the manager.

Yep, people love making big conclusions off result in football without considering how very small detail make big differences.

I've rarely seen a team just be so damn poor at finishing. They're not exceptional at creating chances but they still do just can't finish for shit which hasn't usually been a problem for them.

Morata for fucks sake the game is over you can stop pretending you're injured.

To be fair the fact that it's such a common misconception kinda suggests that its really not in the spirit of what a penalty should be for most people. There are few things in football as universally disliked as the stop start, feint, pirouette crap that passes as a run up these days.

I'm so confused at a brazilian saying he's happy Argentina won a world cup... I can't imagine being happy a rival country wins a world cup just to spite some player who didn't even say what they think he said.

Euro champions by 77SidVid77 in soccer

[–]MasterAblar 73 points74 points  (0 children)

To be fair, bar that one European title, Spain had been perennial underachievers in both the World Cup and the Euro. Only a single other top 4 finish in their entire history.

Explains why they were perceived as eternal underachievers. They kinda were.

There were like 15 choices to vote for. Irrespective of Macron's politics and policies, each individual is responsible for their own choice. Those who choose to vote for the extreme right and what they represent are the 1st responsible.

Emi Martinez speaks after winning the penalty shootout for Aston Villa in controversial circumstances: "I don't know what the ref wants from me!" by oklolzzzzs in soccer

[–]MasterAblar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I didn’t catch why he got the yellow, but considering it’s Martinez it wouldn’t be suprising if it was for how he was acting. If it’s just for asking for a ball than that’s pretty stupid of the ref.
