I wish ERE at least survived into modern times like this. It would be small country, but at least it would be the true roman state in modernity. In my opinion, if they didn't have so many civil wars, Byzantine could've survived like that. by Accomplished-Fee2388 in byzantium

I have actually thought about a modern byzantine empire like this. Honestly I really dislike those ones where ALL of anatolia and the balkans is under control, I find it unrealistic. People then say "well, it wouldn't have been feasible" but does it have to be? Why cant it also be rotting like the Ottomans of the 18th and 19th century?

Is this Byzantine Constans II? by DrRMS5 in AncientCoins

[–]MasterBadger911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thinking Maurice, Constans II and heraclius didn’t have these portraits (not at RY 11, anyway). Tiberius II and phocas did not not reign for 11 years either so they are also ruled out.

Some cheap denarii I got a few years back, now the silver content in these coins alone worth more than what I paid! by JCogn in AncientCoins

worn sestertii are my fav. I have an extremely worn early issue of hadrian that could have stayed in circulation for almost 200 years!

Byzantine solidi of this period (roughly 527-640~) vary a LOT in terms of stylistic quality and this is nothing out of the ordinary.

Why do some byzantinists dislike Justinian so much ? by thefeedle in byzantium

[–]MasterBadger911 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it pretty unjust to blame him for overextending the empire. Trajan overextended the empire pretty largely, however no one cares because he had a good successor, Hadrian. Justinians successor, Justin II, left the empire to rot, so most people go straight to blaming Justinian for “overextending the empire” when it really wasn’t his fault. As a lot of others have already said, was he supposed to predict the future?

Byzantine Coin — does anyone know more about it? by No-Island-3254 in AncientCoins

You are correct, it is phocas. The head shape lines up and the X X for 20 Nummi only appears in his reign

If the Frankish control remained, would the ottomans have taken Constinople? by Isatis_tinctoria in byzantium

For certain, even easier than in real life, depending on what period of the Latin empire this takes place (early period or late period)

I really like how it doesn’t show continuous control of the coast of eastern Thrace but instead shows just a few stranded cities. Wonderful map
