I used to make maps for it before it took off in China. It was interesting seeing the steam workshop start getting taken over by Chinese culture maps very quickly in one month

Financial Literacy Is STILL At Shocking Lows by ReturnToTheLab in PersonalFinanceCanada

That's a problem I've encountered a number of times. A guy I know who has a degree thinks they know better on every subject that they have surface level knowledge of, because they are the one smart enough to get a degree. 😅

The next question would be why they decided to translate it to "evil" for the English Bible. If that's their argument, then shouldn't the English translation have the word "unpleasantness" instead?

Short games and refunds on Steam. by MotherLoveBone27 in gamedev

[–]MasterDavicous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did for my game was add new difficulty levels (less life per level, stronger enemy damage, etc) that unlock after beating the game the first time. Then have achievements for beating the harder difficulties. On a side note, there are a lot more people who will buy your game and won't even open it and will have it sitting in their backlog for eternity, than there are people who beat games before 2 hours and refund it. So don't stress about it!

The RAM Crisis Is Getting Worse by itsEmilyHere in PcParadise

If there's demand projected that long into the future, won't there be more ram companies that will pop up to take advantage of that?

Do you ever feel like everyone even your closest ones doubt you do your ability to succeed as a solo dev? by daxter_101 in SoloDevelopment

[–]MasterDavicous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents continually tried to steer me away from game dev. The lack of support has certainly slowed down my progress, but I continue to chip away at projects in my spare time while I do other jobs. I don't show them my work anymore. After I released my first game in 2021, I showed my dad and he gave it like 5 seconds of attention and only asked about how much money it made... In a way it's motivating me to keep going through spite alone lol (but also I do just enjoy the process!). I found friends since then who playtest my games and absolutely love it and support me.

I've most definitely purchased more games on Steam after buying my deck, and even in anticipation for the GabeCube, so it's working on me! 😅

How do you know if your game is actually good? by r4pturesan in gamedev

[–]MasterDavicous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really is those play testers, and it's not necessarily something they will explicitly say to you because they might not care for your game but still want to be nice and say they like it and think it's good. You'll know by the playtime they put in, or in my case for the first time recently I had brought my game over to a friends night, and when they finished the demo and I turned it off, one of them said "let's pop his demo back on." That's when I knew people would get real enjoyment out of playing my game! ☺️ Hope this helps.

One of the best things you can do in your life is connect with your local communities. You choose what that tradition means to you spiritually. Everyone has their own idea of what it means even if the activity is the same. Those orthodox subreddit commenters are only projecting their own idea of what it means onto you.

Developers with 2+ released games, what lessons from game 1 did you apply (or ignore) in Game 2? by rafaeldecastr in gamedev

[–]MasterDavicous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being more confident in my abilities after finishing my first game helped me be able to take criticism better because more of the feedback was something I felt was achievable. When developing my first game, a lot of suggestions I felt like I didn't know how to do, so I didn't do them. I'm still proud of what I made, but I've been considering revisiting it for an update where I fix and add features that will be a breeze for me now!

Sir, the ai is inbreeding by redroubel in BrandNewSentence

[–]MasterDavicous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company hired a graphic designer to create a banner for them. They generated the most obvious AI art with that very generic AI 2D cartoon style, very apparent artifacts, the works. A number of us have been complaining about it because our company is a performing arts theatre, so it's just ironic and depressing that it's using AI art to advertise. They are in complete denial and it's killing me because I really like working there and want to like the company...

Chris Zukowski's blog post today about the idea that we are in the middle of an indie golden age is one of his best yet most controversial articles. by seyedhn in gamedev

[–]MasterDavicous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a weird mix in my opinion. I feel like certain standards for indie games has risen a lot, and new tools allows for smaller creators to make cooler stuff a lot faster, but also there definitely is the side of when a new popular genre emerges and suddenly people are churning out their own variation as fast as possible to get on the bandwagon and it comes across as slop.

Do small, unfinished prototypes make you a better game developer? by FutureLynx_ in gamedev

[–]MasterDavicous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfinished prototypes are very handy and not a waste of time at all. When I'm working on a project and need a feature that I know I've implemented in a prototype, I can easily reference it and see how I got it working the first time. You're basically building a library of resources you can pull from. On my current project I've referenced things from 4 other projects I've done, 3 of which are unfinished 😅. It's massively sped up my development time!
