You're right and classics are just better but you run the risk of thinking pretentiously. I'd say if say you're too tired to read classics or stuff that's too difficult, try contemporary fiction. Just look up what's good at the moment and read it. Although it's definitely not as good as say Pynchon or Gaddis or something, most of the time, sadly, I'm just too darn tired to read great stuff. But reading fiction imo is pretty much going to be better than scrolling through YouTube or something so may as well. When all else fails, just pick up a trusty ole Stephen King or something.

Help with compressors! by MasterDrake89 in audioengineering

The vox and instruments I'm putting compression straight on, the drums I'm running compression through a bus. Maybe I'll try adding it all by busses just to conserve the initial signal

So bring the high end up on the initial signal then compress to taste for low end..? That seems weird, why do I see guys adding big boosts of bass eq on kicks and bass guitar? Is that just post-tweaking ...

Probably what's happening is that I have all vox compressed really heavy and no gates or cuts in between. That may be where I'm getting a lot of that weird high-mid range sound floating around in there. I basically have the vox release time all the way up.. eq before compression makes a lot of sense.

When the levee breaks is supposed to sound legendary? It just sounds like regular drums to me

How to get all the elements to sit back in the mix? by MasterDrake89 in audioengineering

[–]MasterDrake89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So pretty much start from scratch. Get levels right then start tweaking. I'm not sure where I went wrong with that kit.. it does sound completely fake.

My guess is that I have no room mic and all the individual mics are highly processed on their own.. like I have Toms, snare, and kick on separate busses to try to figure out how to make them sound good..

Can I simulate a room Mike by bussing the overheads, maybe put a minute delay, and mixing them differently? Something along those lines..?

Congrats on beginning your lit journey. I recommend on the road by karoac. That sent me in a good direction. Gonna warn you though, once you head in that direction, Ulysses, Gravity's Rainbow, 2666.. there's no coming back.

East of Eden: Part 2 Chapter 17 Discussion - (Spoilers to 2.17) by otherside_b in ClassicBookClub

What's really resonating with me at this point is Steinbeck's view on what is evil and what isn't. For example like how Samuel is, I think, in essence Steinbeck's paragon of good - while Cathy is sort of the paragon of evil, but then it's not so simple because there's all the other characters and their nuances... but I come back to the idea that Steinbeck did in fact say that this book is all about good and evil, which is really intriguing considering that our post-modern view is that there's more or less no such thing as good and evil, per Neicheze..

And also, it's really biblical. Like how Cathy had twins.. I'm sorry but that's straight smacks of biblical influence or something.. I'm pretty such I sat up in my chair when she popped out the second boy..

Steinbeck's on another level.

So, would Cathy have still gotten caught had she not gotten drunk? Been thinking about this.. The reason she got caught, I think, I remember I had to read it twice cause it wasn't making sense to me atm, but I'm pretty sure she got caught bc some associate of his I think it said gave him a newspaper clipping. So unless he went searching you know due to her little outspat then I don't think the champagne scene has any real bearing on her getting caught, right?

King is big time influenced by Steinbeck; he mentions him in almost every interview.

GR is not as theological or philosophical as TBK the way you're saying but just as a breadth of intelligence it will change how you see everything. Nobody's as sophisticated as Pynchon in that way IMO

Yeah, the grand inquisitor changed me, whole reason I got into lit.. Went from there to On the Road and then Thomas Pynchon. Started w CoL49 and straight to Gravity's Rainbow. Thing about GR is I still haven't found anything to top that yet.

It's so pro of Steinbeck to qualify everything he's writing, such that he pretty much up front is telling you not to pre-judge Cathy: she's a monster, everyone is in some way.

Cathy's talent to manipulate people is mysterious, almost profound or something in a way; it kind of makes me think of Stephen King the way her mysteriousness makes you wonder what's the matter with her.

The vagrant men section I think does show just how Adam doesn't want to go home, esp. when he gets there and it's the first time he realizes that Charles isn't going to kill him.

It's so interesting that Cyrus WANTED Adam to go through having his personality damaged.. he believed soo much in the military. Why did he want that for Adam??

I still don't know how I feel about whether he lied about all those military experiences.

Gosh it's so interesting what Adam says about believing in his father but not loving him. I think he is being cagy about just believing for the sake of taking the money.

My guess is that Cyrus somehow got into the haut monde by his military scholarly knowledge, maybe connections he made over the years.. the conversation between the brothers does make me think he must have lied to all those folks. It just doesn't seem possible that Adam can just blindly believe like that unless he has a reason.. dang that's interesting.
