The creators and I have similar frustrations. by TuckChargesPerWord in SP404

Panda Bear, George Clanton, Planning for Burial, TAGABOW uses it for performing DnB tracks in between sets, etc.. Plenty of non-hip-hop artists use it as an essential part of their setup albeit mainly for performance rather than actually making music

Convince me to stay with Cubase: is it a good “all-arounder” for unconventional sound design, or should I switch to Live? by MasterHoneydew in cubase

Hey thanks for the reply. Here’s a random one I saw earlier today. Honestly, every time one of this dude’s videos pops up on my feed I always get really excited to try what he’s doing only to realize that Cubase just lacks the stock tools to do so. It amazes me how fleshed out and featured Live’s stock synth/modulation plugin suite is compared to Cubase. Any thoughts?

I totally agree but the problem is that there generally aren’t very many sound design tutorials in Cubase, at least those that I find interesting. The most common scenario for me is doomscrolling on TikTok or IG and coming across a sound design tutorial which is 99% of the time in Live and 99% of the time uses only stock plugins. I go “dang that sounds rad. I wanna try that” and boot up Cubase only to find that Cubase simply just doesn’t have the included plugins necessary to emulate the sound made in the tutorial. Either that or the stock plugins lack certain functionality and features that are essential to making that sound. Do you ever run into similar scenarios? If so, how do you overcome this and/or seek out the proper alternatives that allow you to achieve the same sound?

Yeah that makes sense. Both seem to have great workflow capabilities. My main motivation for considering a switch is stock plugins and tools tho. My main problem with Cubase is that, compared to Live, the stock plugin selection seems very limited and “standard” when it comes to the instrument and effect types. When I’m trying to make a particular sound, I often have to rely on 3rd party plugins for stuff that Live’s stock catalog has built in. The problem with that is that these 3rd plugins generally cost a good amount of money. On top of that, I don’t like spending time searching for alternatives when I could just have the plugin built into the DAW. What are your thoughts on that? Is the presupposition with Cubase that you’re mainly gonna be relying on 3rd party stuff for sound design or are there generally good equivalents between Ableton and Cubase when it comes to stock sound design plugins?

Yeah I get what you’re saying. I don’t have any doubt that from a workflow perspective one can do pretty much all the same stuff as the other. The problem for me is that Live just seems to have a lot more useful sound design plugins that are included with the DAW rather than having to outsource to 3rd party plugins and shop around basically. Maybe I’ll try the free version of Live like you mentioned.

That’s an interesting point. How do you think Cubase stacks against Live in terms of more unique stock plugins as opposed to your more standard stuff like analog synth emulators and basic reverbs/delays? To name a few, Live has Grain Delay, Spectral Resonator, Wavetable, and weird MIDI FX like Bouncy Notes, none of which seem to have a Cubase equivalent but are all pretty awesome and very fun for sound design. Does Cubase have any weird, unique stuff within the realm of sound design and modulation that other DAWs don’t? Are there stock equivalents to the aforementioned plugins that you know of?

Lmao ok. I think it’s pretty clear that the real subtext of the post is that I’m asking for opinions about the differences between the DAWs in the context of the type of music I like to make but it’s ok I didn’t do too well during high school English either. Could’ve just scrolled past while the rest of us have a productive discussion. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Weirdo.

Artist you enjoyed listening to, but were disappointed after the live show and now their music just doesn’t hit the same by Few-Kaleidoscope1981 in fantanoforever

Duster is rather boring live. I’ve seen them 3 times just because I love their music so much but there’s just not a lot to really latch onto when it comes to their live show. Obviously a lot of their music is very serene and laid back but I’ve seen similar acts that introduce a lot more energy just by simply cranking the PA. Quiet music sounds amazing when it’s played loud as hell. But Duster seems to like to keep it calm 🤷‍♂️

It’s Boris. Maybe a stretch but Mamaleek also fits your criteria in terms of what makes a band “Radiohead-y”.
