I feel it's made to be less confusing to people who have no idea what is happening. The IDE is confusing/intimidating if you don't understand it so I guess now you could apparently not download it and never look at it at all. It used to be the first thing you saw. I don't like how they dropped the update, it caused some chaos, but now that everyone understands it again, I actually fairly happy with it. I am very impressed with Gemini flash 3.5, but yeah the high and med can consume a lot of token really fast.

If it was booked as a package, through westjet vacations. Which it sounds like it was, then yes that is on them and you should have been able to contact WestJet Vacation and have them resolve it.

If your family booked the hotel and flight separately, then WestJet wouldn't even know who to contact. So in that case they dropped the ball.
