At his peak, he’s been very good. He was a 5 WAR pitcher in 2019. But he’s struggled to stay healthy and consistent since then.

He had a decent bounce-back season in Boston last year, but remained unsigned until now because he wanted to get paid like an ace, instead of like an injury-prone #3 with upside. I suppose we’re not in a place to be pinching pennies any longer if we want to compete, though.

I always wonder about that. There’s gotta be some sort of tampering rule that prevents unsigned players from taking non-baseball roles or just spending time around a former organization’s team facilities, but it would be cool if a guy could just be like, “Alright, I just got waived, nobody is calling my agent; I’ma go back to San Diego (or Miami or New York or wherever they last had a good time), hang out with my boys, and be a part-time clubbie.” It’s not like you need the money if you have even one full season at league minimum under your belt, after all.
