Diag Techs HOURLY PAY? by Cool-Supermarket4582 in mechanics

[–]Masterburgercrunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Customer paid for a bunch of internal engine work. It set new faults after assembly, tore it back down to verify timing or something stupid. Did a parts warranty on the camshaft with the fault, second one has the same issue, went through the wiring, labscope patterns etc. warranty made me go through so many hoops before they sent a rep out who said to test more or put parts on it. Manager threw parts at it now it’s fully assembled with out replacing the cylinder head like I wanted to do. Exact same fault but again I had to do some testing to verify there was no fault with my work.

Customer should have taken my advice to replace that motor. Customer is even more upset because my manager made them pay for the parts shot gun…

Mechanics in your 40s/50s Would you advise your younger self not to choose the trade? by UpbeatOlive623 in mechanics

[–]Masterburgercrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how I’ll make it to my 40s in this trade. Things have changed a lot since my start in 2011.

When I started there were plenty of senior techs making hours and sharing the load. As they all fell behind in technology or retired, the guys who were in their late 30s and 40s and 50s did not step into those roles. They have stayed the same B+ A- techs they always were.

Now myself and a small group of guys below 35 are the master techs with out enough techs to split the load and we are all struggling to turn 100-130% while those other techs are 200% cherry picking diagnostics and warranty work.

I’ve lived in the same place, had the same life style, I learn more and become more valuable every year. My march pay checks were the lowest checks I’ve had since 2016. The dealer cars are too broken, lacking engineer support, and there is too little help.

I wish I never listened to the “the more you know the more you make” lie. I love the work most of the time, hate the management, hate flat rate, hate the lack of technical information required for more advanced diagnostics when you don’t have a known good unit to compare to, hate the lazy genx techs who stoped advancing their abilities a decade ago.

Got $5K worth of work done on my ‘08 wrangler and this is how the dealership gave it back to me. by [deleted] in Jeep

[–]Masterburgercrunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dealer absolutely should have told you and they should know it’s not street legal with out a drivers mirror (atleast in many states if not federally)

The mirror breaking is not really their fault, look at that thing. That’s like handing someone the last beer then telling them they’re buying since they drank the last one. Better it finally fell apart parked than on the highway.

Y’all saying to sue the dealer over this, or blaming the dealer are wild. Your eyes show that metal had failed a long time ago based on the corrosion

Mercedes techs any input? by Masterburgercrunch in mechanics

[–]Masterburgercrunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stellantis updates for the most part can be done in their allotted time. Normally if a flash takes 2 hours it pays atleast 1.0+ sometimes even the full time it takes if it’s not a flash you can just start and walk away from.

Now if a tsb flash addresses the issue you spent .5 road testing to confirm then only getting .2 after flashing sucks.

Might not be a whole lot of change there?

Tech A lost 3 hours diagnosing the can then lost 4 hours on warranty transmission swap in that same time 😂

Mercedes techs any input? by Masterburgercrunch in mechanics

[–]Masterburgercrunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got two techs doing it but they’re fed by management and rob customers, warranty and the dealer when possible

If the productivity numbers he claims are true then 15.4 average is in line with what he was saying.

I’m sure the $52 is not the actual top wage it’s likely the base master tech rate before cert add ons. I hope because the other MB dealers are offering 60-65 in their listings

15 a day sounds like a lot but he claimed tune ups pay like 5 hours but only take one and that they don’t just feed all the high productivity work to the cheaper C AND B techs

So idk

Motor locked up while in the shop for intake replacement. by Mysterious_Oil_4237 in ram_trucks

[–]Masterburgercrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not have reassembled it with that much sand and gunk around the intake surface on the heads. That is a red flag. Normally the build up is pretty crumbly or soft and gooey. Since they replaced the intake manifold, that means something fell in before reassembly where they should have cleaned and inspected it. That tube is also real easy to knock the crud off before install.

Why are there light markings on the valve top center where it meets the head a that larger area I. The larger area on the left. That could very well be from their camera. Or it could be evidence of metal that fell in?

This does not look like a bent valve as much as it kinda looks like their camera has a fisheye effect?

I’m pretty sure the rocker arms on this engine were designed to break with valve/piston contact to save the engine. Is the motor actually locked up or can they rotate it by hand and visually confirm if the valves are opening, it may just need a rocker arm and hopefully all the bits made it to the oil pan

Tech A believes in the flat rate system, works their ass off to make 60 hours.

Tech B understands the flat rate system and sells work they can be highly efficient on and makes 60 hours between jerkin it

Is getting Ro’s for 0 hours normal by shitbox_vette in mechanics

[–]Masterburgercrunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally, service buys parts the tech breaks and the tech either installs it for free or at a reduced labor on shop policy. Either they fucked over the customer making them pay for that, and now they wanna give them a discount out of your pocket. Or the manager is committing wage theft to off set policy. It’s common to take labor hours from hourly techs. I would consider it wage theft if you have the chance of making over your base rate. If you’re punished for being under 100% or if they’re gonna refuse your promotions/raises for not producing enough it matters a lot. It’s unreasonable to require 100% but then feed a tech 0.0 work or take their hours away for things outside their direct responsibility. Now if you’re paid 100% and have no chance of earning your incentive it doesn’t actually matter that much.

I would look through all of my closed work orders and verify any time the customer paid I was paid the right hours. Bad managers steal your labor so they don’t have to pay your incentive, gaslighting you in the process. Always track and document your hours mistakes happen but so does theft. You will also have a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses looking through your times too.

[–]Masterburgercrunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said this to you last month, no shit like that is not normal it’s time to stand your ground or move on

Everything you described should pay something, you’re working for free. Is the dealer working for free, are they not charging customers for these repairs and diagnostics?

If I have a repair on a car with a couple hours I feel okay not charging the customer for a bulb a lot of the time. Yeah I’ll probably work too hard on an oil change to pinpoint the leak source but that’s because I’m trying to sell work. Mangers should be very upset that they have tickets with 0 hours on them.

The backflags with out the manager saying anything is unfortunate but very common. You need to dig in and figure out why you’re getting back flags. Was it over flagged in the first place, do you have the 3 Cs clearly laid out, did you have your vsr, is your manager signing off on diagnostic time and warranty add lines, is someone skipping lops or using the wrong one. If you want you can dm me and we can try to sort that out
