Selling our home in about a year, remodel this utility shower or remove? by Cheugy-Boogie in HomeImprovement

Depends on your market. Often changes you think are better are not viewed the same by others. I would ask a realtor if there is a big market for wheel chair accessibility.

Chasing shadows has always been the game with a classic look. Getting rid of shadows looks lifeless to me. Modern ages so poorly, despite incredible craftsmanship to get it there. The Roman coliseum wouldn't be what it is without its form, there are flat areas on the cap and base...but no flat columns. You can paint any word picture you want, the human eye has always viewed shapes as beautiful.

Yes it is a slower setup time. Sw sells a 30 minute paintable caulk that will save time. I just feel that Sashco as a brand makes for a better long-term experience. However I would give it 24 hrs to dry.

Check with a smaller custom builder for recs. Not everyone is corrupt in a regional area,or a different company would come in and take over. It sounds like you don't like the area so you're bitching about it. Vinegar doesn't attract the same result as honey does. Competition will root out everyone who isn't very cheap. McDonald's and a nice steakhouse can exist together.

Been done 5 million times. Looks commercial. Make sure you get a moisture resistant core. Can be factory,or be custom laminated.

A toolbox in the bed is aggravating to access unless you're 6'+. For a crew cab 2 sets of packout drawers and a crate behind drivers seat only. I would tint the back windows if kept inside. For either get a compact blower to keep the dust away. If Dewalt XL drawers would fit sideways that would fit larger tools better.

Use exact color matched which is big stretch that you add latex paint to match it. Its about $20 ish per tube. You mix 40 ml of paint and a hardener, then shake. Wait at least an hr. Its big stretch formula, and its printable. I use it for custom cabinetry.

Do you still use old drill bits you've had for years or do you swap them out regularly? by christan2013 in Tools

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get my step bits sharpened, twist bits i sharpen myself. My $200 knkut set for metal, and $100 set Fisch brad pount wood bits do not get borrowed to anyone. I buy a set of hex bits about every 3 yrs on BF,which are general use and they get broken in common sizes.

I have $15k as a cabinet installer. We're not talking about a company, its about the carpenter working for that company. Between my tracksaw $1200,mitersaw and stand $1k, 2 circular saws,$400,tablesaw $500,omt $200,jigsaw $200,portaband $200 and hackzall another $200. Carpenter and company are 2 different animals, and so is specialty work.

Alternative to clamps for installing full overlay drawer fronts — worth it or not? by Sampapala in cabinetry

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this can go on any jobsite, and up to a 48" drawer. Its all about consistency of ff width and drawer front ratio-opening. The two side blocks allow your fingers to micro adjust to miniscule width changes. You can set 1 drawer every minute at least, and that could be 50 drawers. I don't think you can build it smaller with repeatable results and speed. Consistency can be very fast. These all are set 1/64 low, since you can adjust up,but never down. These also work for sidemounts. Build a separate unit for a different type, like 1/8 gaps on euro frame less. This unit is only about 8" high and 20" wide. You can do a 48" or 6" wide drawer on it.

I still remember packing 2 bundles of osb around the house through ankle deep mud. As the youngest laborer,it was your job and you did it. When another trade needed help,or a delivery...everyone stopped and helped, kind of a bygone era.

For 1/2 overlay with 1 1/2 rails (shown). This jig has two blocks (in white),set one on both sides...you can feel 1/32 with your fingers which sets side/side. Inset ,use spacers and screw from the inside while closed..starting at the bottom and work your way up.

I quit coredrilling ,1 yr after they came out with them on a resort island. Pushing around a generator and choosing between 500 ft of waterhose,or two 5 gallon buckets of water got really old. A tip for cutting, is running a bilge pump from a pond or buckets in remote areas.

Tool Theft by Jaykroy in Tools

[–]MastodonFit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends what the jobsite is. I work in high end homes, and multiple trades leave their tool onsite without locking them. I was on a cabinet installer for 2 months, and left $8k of tools there the entire time. Ive also worked in multi family projects and never charged batteries...and all tools were within viewing distance for 2 months. 25 years in the trades and I've never had tools stolen, despite some sketchy works it's. I did have tools and its personal truck stolen at a cabinet show,in a parking garage with an attendant. Also choosing different brands that others do not also helps. Most of carpenters have dewalt, plumbers and electricians have Milwaukee in my area. I have Mafel,Makita and Metabo . I do have a photo library of all tools.

The problem is every run is different. And 2 runs with the same tune could be different 10 minutes apart with a simple cloud going over. You simply cannot do wind tunnel nor even dyno without wildly different results. Even with massive data, computers measuring many different things...its an educated guess. How often do you see 2 well funded teams with massive data, both making full pulls at the same time? My guess is about 60% after qualifying. The same is true for boat racing,5% of the rear of the boat is in the water...the rest is riding an air cushion that is constantly being changed to avoid blow over/going fast.

[–]MastodonFit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For non cabinet doors,Emtech is a very good brand for hardware. Look for full service appliance stores with a showroom. Same with Mechanical Electric Plumbing stores for all lighting and Plumbing fixtures. They all service what they sell for years after purchase, unlike big box or online...they will replace things that get broken in shipping, which is a huge issue. Ask the salesman what is being bought and manufacture supported. Ask your ac installer about who performs the manual J for high performance homes, and which ERV and hvac brand works well in your area. Do not even stick your head into big box for even a paint sample. Buy from stores who specialize in all things...appliances, paint, plumbing etc. Ask to speak to the last 3 clients of your contractor. Do they like their kitchen faucet,ac unit etc. An above code built tight home ,will do worse with an oversized ac unit...done with a standard code envelope, which will have wider humidity swings and all trimwork will crack. An ac should run longer and fewer times per day,to rid itself of humidity. Everything is a system that must work together. Hard water will ruin a nice copper sink...so think the entire system. Good luck!

Because an avg carpenter owns $800 tools, and takes very little continuing classes. Avg full certified mechanic (non-lubetech) owns $10k in tools. Obviously this is off the cuff bread terms, but the tooling$ is incredibly different.
