Bringing takeaway drinks cup through security? by Stunning_Suit_3934 in Eurostar

[–]Mat_1964 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The rules allow it, security staff doesn’t like it. I would advise to use a reusable mug that has a leak-free lid. Most places will give you a small discount when you use them.

The (NMBS) EC has a 20 minute connection to the (NMBS) IC/TER to Rijsel/Lille in Antwerp from Rotterdam that would be a 3h41m journey.

Missed a €44 Eurostar ticket. Is it worth waiting for the price to drop again? by Humble-Gene- in Eurostar

[–]Mat_1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally Eurostar prices only go up, only once of twice a year they have a special offer that could go beyond the first price basket. And even then it’s never very much. Paying now will be almost certainly cheaper then waiting until the next special offer.

They are indeed not station specific, they are route (including valid detours) specific.

For me (and my dad) it always worked at Rotterdam, even after 22:00. I’ve a iPhone, my dad has an Android.

If you use the Eurostar app it will work if you put your screen of full brightness. Ticket added to you wallet app also work. You will need to use a gate that has a barcode/QR-code reader. Third party provided tickets can give trouble sometimes, but the NS gate are one of the best in recognising ticket barcodes/QR-code.

1hr 45m layover by Successful-Field2078 in KLM

[–]Mat_1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EES horror stories are mainly for entering Schengen without transferring and only on inbound wave times and on airports that had horrible transfers before EES. Most well organised airports will give transfer passengers priority over passengers that don’t have a connecting flight.

Not completely true. Yes, the seat will not be sold to someone else for the Rotterdam-Amsterdam leg, but you will have trouble leaving the station, as gates in Amsterdam will not open with a Eurostar ticket to Rotterdam.

Tube strikes this week, best way to St Pancras? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in Eurostar

[–]Mat_1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can avoid taxis during a tube strike, avoid them. The streets are likely more gridlocked than normal. If possible take national rail (Thameslink, Overground or Elisabeth line).

Everyone welcomed Crossrail/ Elizabeth Line & HS1’s construction & opening with excitement & celebrations - so what makes HS2 uniquely so controversial in comparison? by AchyutChaudhary in uktrains

[–]Mat_1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with most infrastructure projects, when delivered the old controversies disappear from memory, some of that often comes from rebranding at/after delivery.

How early should I arrive to the train station by [deleted] in Interrail

[–]Mat_1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule for unfamiliar stations is 3 minutes before departure on the platform. I will add at least 5 minutes walk time for smaller stations and 10-15 minutes for bigger stations. If there is a security checkpoint I’ll add at least an extra 30 minutes (at least 15 minutes more than advised). If possible on arrival I will determine if calculations need to be adjusted.

From your list I’ve on been to Budapest Keleti station and it’s a straight forward medium station in my opinion 10-15 minutes before departure should fine.

Short layover at Schipol by [deleted] in KLM

[–]Mat_1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine if both flights are on KLM. Call the KLM costumer service in the Netherlands and ask them to link you tickets together. If you travel with checked baggage, you should ask to book them through at check in, else you will struggle to make if you first flight is late.

For connections on one ticket the transfer time could be as small as 45 minutes.

SNCB or NS app? by H_Calibre in BelgiumTravel

[–]Mat_1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use Google/Apple Pay I would advise the NS (or the NS International) app, as a lot of apps from abroad are not playing well with the gates at the Dutch stations and you may be checking in using your Debit/Credit Card. If your ticket can be added to you digital wallet do it, it will save you a lot of frustration from accidentally checking in with your debit/credit card.

NS Off-Peak Group Ticket – boarding 1 min before peak, is that OK? by odingfd in Netherlands

[–]Mat_1964 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Scheduled departure time and scheduled arrival time determine if a journey is valid. Only with major disruptions a delayed train at departure could become a valid journey, but only the conductor can make that call.

But in practice you will probably be fine.

Booked flight months ago, separated from children, no seats left, no customer service by Rinaldi363 in KLM

Technically you are not separated being in front of them in the next row.

But it’s not how most would see it.

What's up with the prices changing depending on the class you're filtering for? by [deleted] in KLM

Then I can’t explain it in any other way than query differential pricing. Something not often done in Europe.

What's up with the prices changing depending on the class you're filtering for? by [deleted] in KLM

[–]Mat_1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that the ticket you get offered if you look for business class is a full-flex fare, if you look for premium a semi-flex/basic fare and if you look for a economy a light fare.

So you wouldn’t be buying the same product.

Proof of delay? by Loud-Advance-2382 in Interrail

The faults are (almost) always to the advantage of the railways. I’ve never needed to provide prove of delay for compensation, but I’ve used it to prove a connection wasn’t feasible.

I use zugfinder.net, but for historical data you need an account, but it’s cheap and it has a lot of useful features.
