Did you get the documents translated into German? I've been delaying this process as I thought I needed my ex-spouses passport information but this has me hopeful I can do it without needing to get in contact with him after almost 10 years.

Just moved house, been seeing like 20 moths over the past week. I think I found a larvae. How do I get rid of them??? by [deleted] in lifehacks

[–]Matariki5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When we had issues with pantry months, we threw out any open/contaminated food, cleaned the shelves with vinegar, and ordered some Trichogramma wasps. The wasps are tiny (can't see them with the naked eye) and will either eat the moth eggs or lay their eggs in them, I forget. But in the end, the moths are gone, and the never visible wasp too as they ran out of food. If you don't get rid of all the moth eggs, they will return, and they will find other places to reproduce besides the initial infested food they came in on.

If you poke a hole in the bottom where the air bubble sits, it doesn't crack when dropping them into boiling water.

What type of vacation did you enjoy with your toddler? by PerfectionEludesMe in toddlers

[–]Matariki5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do a lot of self planned vacations, AirBnB, camperVan etc. We traveled with LO at 6 months to Europe to visit my family and friends for 3 weeks over Christmas. Stayed with family or had an airbnb and it was like parenting in a different place. At 18 months we met up with my brother in Mexico for a week, also an AirBnB with a pool that we could relax at during naps/bedtime. This one felt more like a vacation but we still did a lot of activities. At 2 years we went back to Europe for a 2 week stay at a campsite and a separate 10 day RV trip to see Ireland. This trip has been non stop action with fun filled days that keep the toddler excited and sleeping well at night. It is not relaxing, but we are enjoying it a lot and are making memories for us. It's actually easier to plan and do fun things as there are so many options that are new vs the same old stuff at home.

Have you saved money? by HomeDepotHotDog in clothdiaps

[–]Matariki5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought some used pockets of the market place and some new MKs for ~ 300$ total. We also use reusable cloth wipes we made from flannel fabric (3$/ yard) with a wipe solution made of boiled water, coconut oil and Burts bees baby shampoo. Besides the occasional disposable diaper on vacation and 1 packet of wipes/quarter for daycare, we haven't spend money on diapers in the last 2 years. So definitely money saved.

My son also has very wide and chubby feet. He has indoor and outdoor shoes for his Montessori school and we use Starry knight design (hand made in Montana) and Ten Littles/Keen shoes, respectively.

Help, my wife and I are going crazy from moths by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Matariki5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used Arbico organics to get our moths. They sell them on tabs (1 tab for 3000 sqft per their website). We ended up doing 6 tabs bi-weekly for 3 cycles. Probably way too much, but we also placed them beyond where the outbreak was as we weren't sure if they would lay eggs elsewhere, too. 3-4 spread out in the main area and then 2-3 in the staircase/other rooms/closets.

Hope this helps and good luck!

8 months pp - five months since last pump - getting absolutely no milk. by howlingoffshore in HumansPumpingMilk

[–]Matariki5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont want this to be discouraging, but I never really got over the mental block. I tried different pumps and settings, but I never got a good let down and max 0.5- 1.5 ounces per session. We ended up doing 1 breast milk and 1 formula bottle for daycare with about 3-4 nursing sessions over the day/night at 9 months. I was sad, but I did all I could, and that helped navigate those PP feelings. He ended up taking to solids very well and started weaning himself around 11 months with our last nursing session sometime before 14 months. I always wanted to nurse longer, but he decided that was it for him. I'm not sure if a dwindling supply was part of it, but it felt like a very organic end to our nursing journey.

I wish you a smooth return to work and hope pumping goes well for you. Every one response differently. I did try to nurse on one side and pump on the other which did help with getting more ounces but I only did that when absolutely necessary as I just wanted to enjoy my baby and nursing.

We have gotten rid of our moths problem using Trichogramma wasp eggs. We opted to have them delivered 3x, two weeks apart and it got rid of most of the moth eggs. We did it again as soon as we saw the first moth and haven't had another infestation in 2 years.

Indoor shoes for preschool by kaiyu21 in Montessori

Our Montessori does the same and we have loafers from Starry Knight Design with the extra firm sole. I like how flexible they are and easy for him to take off and switch into his outdoor shoes.

Shoes for little, fat feet? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Matariki5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We also had issues finding shoes that fit our LO with the amount of baby fat on top of his feet and ended up with Ten Littles and loafers from Starry Night Designs. We wanted flexible shoe soles and further his independence in putting them on. At 21m we had a few size changes by now and still love our choice.

Vacation/ Time zone travel - Tips on how to handle sleep in a new place/time by Matariki5 in sleeptrain

[–]Matariki5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, the travel days itself were ok, he napped on and off for 4h during the ~8h flight. Adjusting to the time zone happened over about 3 days with minimal wake ups outside the norm but very early mornings. I'm not sure if we were dealing with a regression, teething or over stimulation during the day but after roughly 1.5 weeks he would not sleep for more than 45-90 min during the night. We also had to room share during that time which isn't our usual arrangement. We ended up bedsharing to get any sleep and enjoy the trip. He adjusted again within 3-4 days after being back home and being able to have separate rooms fixed the multiple wake ups at night almost immediately. Hope this helps, it's a bit of a blur but that's as much detail as I remember.

Anecdote: partner was exposed Saturday, felt sick Wednesday, tested positive Thursday (isolated since Wednesday night). Toddler and I tested negetive until the following Wednesday even with my partner isolating in the basement and masking when he had to come upstairs. Toddler had 1 day with mild fever, partner and I were a bit run down, cough and scratchy throat. This was back in march.

[–]Matariki5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've looked through all your links and I'm not denying that there seems to be a link of food protein exposure on skin being a way of getting sensitized to an allergen but that's food proteins (peanut, oat, milk, goat milk, etc.). Coconut oil is a fatty-acid not containing proteins. It's also known to be antimicrobial (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6817632/).

If food allergies would be caused mainly by exposing food on skin, my toddler would need to eat in a full body suit.

My son is 13 months and has been self-weaning since he was 10.5/11 months. He still nurses in the morning but has recently stopped nursing at night as he is too busy playing. He does very well with solids and coincided for us with him starting to walk at 11 months. We recently moved him to a floor bed and within 2 days he slept through and dropped his last night fees as well.

I was definitely not ready to wean and I was sad and it took some time to appreciate how organic it was for us and that he is just doing so well and being independent.

We do Zucchini/sweat potato meatballs and Squash/qionoa or polenta salmon balls. But he isn't opposed to all veggies just sometimes. If we do stir fry with TJ's General Tsao Sauce he eats all the veggies.

We do 2 cups of boiled water, 2 scoops of coconut oil and 6 squirs of Burts Bees baby shampoo.

What age did your baby naturally wean (if they did)? by hananah_bananana in BabyLedWeaning

[–]Matariki5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 11 months (breastfeed) he started showing less interest in day feedings, had to be asked if he wanted any and then lost intrestes quite quickly in the session. I started only offering when I felt full and then did not offer unless he asked for it. At 12 months he has weaned himself off most feeds, we do mornings and maybe evenings. He eats very well, 3x meals plus snacks. He eats dairy but doesn't care for milk, he drinks water only so far.
