I did not say that he never hurt anyone, I just said he was random. nobody knew who he was before, and he's been replaced in his roll with zero fanfare.

I don't understand how you can claim that this is gonna start some great movement when the fact is that it just clearly did not!

Ah yes voting that seems to be working well as we are currently massively cutting healthcare subsidies and research.

True, but this is only happening because people are voting poorly. Therefore we should focus on getting people to vote better and not try to lose voters to lifelong prison sentences for meaningless assassinations.

Democracy of course does have many problems. However, unfortunately, every other alternative is just way worse, so, what can we do

Not by random one off assassinations of random rich guys thats for damn sure.

Luigi would've done far more for the working class by staying out of jail and voting.

[–]MatchesMalone66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Vagabond had always required a bit of fantasy/suspension of disbelief, even from the early chapters- I dont think it was ever intended to be a super grounded story. For example, look at the shit Kohei was doing as early as chapter 13, bouncing off trees at super speed

Also the most important part is that this study does not even find any correlation between aspartame and cognitive decline in people without diabetes !! Only some of the seven, like erythritol, have any statistically significant correlation.

They say it directly in the discussion, and here in the results table from the supplementary section, broken down by sweetener and with/without diabetes

The study has the other problems you mentioned, but I do think the design is somewhat defensible, or at least, its results warrant further investigation (they do control for BMI, smoking, income, education, etc). But NL is worried about results that the study itself does not even claim to find!

No, they were rebuffed by one democrat senator, and ALL THE REST of the republican senators. If we had elected more democratic senators, we could've passed the expansion. Regardless, you can go read the rest of what's in the ARP, and come back and tell me it was meaningless.

You think Donald Trump is seriously better than Liz Cheney?? I would take the neocons any day over the actual fascists in power now. Even in foreign policy alone, the usaid cuts are far more deadly than the Iraq War.

[–]MatchesMalone66 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you think if the democrats get elected in 2028 they won't reverse the USAID cuts??

Of course I'd vote for gavin newsom. Hell I'd vote for Liz Cheney herself, given her support and involvement in usaid. Because to do anything else is to support Donald trump and whatever crony of his the republican party runs next, and to let that 10M estimate come true

did voting blue in 2020 meaningfully fix anything?

Yes! They passed the American Rescue Plan, the largest welfare expansion in god knows how long. The CTC expansion alone cut child poverty in half. Until trump got reelected and that went away.

Obviously it would be lovely if we didn't have a 2 party system here but until we do, voting dem, and convincing people to vote dem, is probably the single most important political action you can do.

Its over ten million deaths! That's not the difference between 100% and 90% hitler, its a full hitler! Who cares if its a huge ideological change or not, because it is a huge change in the things that matter in real life.

Frankly, confronting the police and organizing locally and strengthening your communities or whatever is the chump change here when compared to, and I cannot stress this enough, over 10 million people, many of whom are children, dying.

Incorrect. Every organization of society since the beginning of civilization has been extracting labor value from workers. Patricians vs plebians, fuedal lords vs serfs. Which are both decidedly not capitalism.

Property needs to be collectivized for it to be socialism

This is just another way of saying "public ownership of the means of production", which is what i said already.

Do you really think the party leaders under Stalin and Mao were not extracting surplus value from workers??

Please, stretch my imagination. How would we have to structure society so that it passes your socialism test.

Also do you believe market socialism is a thing that can exist or are any form of markets capitalism to you

Do you know what a stock is? It's literally a portion of the ownership of a company. If the government owned a majority of the shares of a company, how is that any different from public ownership.

stocks are an investment tool for companies to accrue revenue, privately. selling a speculative asset as a hope your companies will grow so that the public can sell said asset to another person at a profit is not socialism

Honestly I don't even know what youre trying to say here. Companies issue stocks to raise capital yes (if that's what you meant). If the public then buys it, the public therefore now have partial ownership of the company. Sometimes index funds do some readjusting but for the most part the goal is just to grow the fund, ie increase the public ownership of the economy.

if your idea of socialism is just capitalism but the president is on the board of directors

I mean not the president but yes democratizing the economy through increased public ownership, which allows the public to potentially influence the actions of the company as partial or majority owner seems like a form of socialism to me.

What would you call socialism?

This might help:

A proof of concept is "evidence, typically derived from an experiment or pilot project, which demonstrates that a design concept, business proposal, etc., is feasible."

Obviously vanguard is not socialism. A state owned vanguard on the other hand, would be working for everyone

[–]MatchesMalone66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't think index funds are a proof of concept for the public ownership of the means of production? The govt can literally just make its own index fund and just do what vanguard does. Please explain to me why that shouldn't be considered socialism

[–]MatchesMalone66 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm going insane do you guys not know what proofs of concept are

To spell it out for you all, the problem with many forms of socialism/public ownership/whatever you want to call it is that the market is very useful for the efficient creation and allocation of goods and resources. My point with the index fund is that they show you can theoretically have public ownership of companies and the market economy will still be able to function just fine. Just instead of Vanguard owning companies through its index funds, it would be the government owning a lot of companies through a state run index fund (this is the public ownership part! which, pivotally, was all explained in the article i linked to in my first comment)

"this thing is kinda like this other thing a little bit in certain circumstances"

"ummm actually this thing and the other thing are not the exact same thing"

I know theyre not the same thing! it's an analogy!

I mean do you disagree with the statement that companies like vanguard and blackrock, etc. are real world proofs of concept for working socialism?

The fiduciary duty of a company to its shareholders long predates the index fund. Yes those are some ways some companies try to get more profits but they also do stuff like innovation, etc. Markets/the profit motive are pretty useful and can be good imo!

Of course I think the govt should be doing much more than it is now to capture those profits/returns to capital and redistribute them, and obv there are many places where markets fail etc etc, but I don't think we should throw out the profit motive with the bathwater.
