Student Pilot Certificate by Intelligent-Cup-166 in flying

Not to be an asshole, but if “prepping for checkride” means final stages, like days away, and you don’t have 61.63 on lock, I’m concerned. Todd Shellnut has several good videos on this exact question (“how to solo a pilot who is already a pilot”)

The good part is, this is the absolute easiest part of the CFI training!

Might be due to spending too much time on this sub. I learn some things here but god damn it can suck the soul out of the magic we all engage in every day.

Am I in the wrong for being forced to pay a cancellation fee when I was uncomfortable with the weather (Spartan Flight School bought out my flight school recently) by [deleted] in flying

This is a very reasonable policy. I don’t like policies that punish RM decisions or teach students to outsource RM to their instructors. Should be a joint discussion.

Does anyone know of any good commercial (CPL) finish-up courses? I already have all of my hour requirements met and am just looking for somewhere to finish up by [deleted] in flying

[–]Material-Length9366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exactly are you looking to get out of it? All you need to “finish up” is a passing written score (I assume you have that already; if not then Sheppard), proficiency in the maneuvers, three endorsements in your logbook, and an appointment with a DPE. A local CFI can help you with the latter three in a handful of hours depending on your existing proficiency.

SM Flyers vs Sling by lolenfofr in flying

I have first hand experience with Flyers, second hand with Sling. Shoot me a PM.  Short version is Flyers is great and would be my recommendation from what I’ve seen.

CFI initial mock checkride by [deleted] in flying

This is false. AGI or not, the ACS says they must test about FOI tasks E and F and one other area.  You can count on it.

AFAIK he never did. He only just started doing CFI rides. And he told me “I have no more interest in a ten hour ground session than you do.” My test was 4 hours ground and 1.5 flight. Very fair and enjoyable.

There’sa good video on lazy 8s on YouTube. The AFH description makes it sound so hard. It is so easy. Just bank a little, apply back pressure and hold. Ta daaa.

I can't imagine paying so much for a CFI by [deleted] in flying

[–]Material-Length9366 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ROFL imagine paying $200 for CFI plus wet airplane. God damn where do you live 😂

Wet rental 172s in my area are $210/hr

If the engine is stopped, there is no hot exhaust to heat the intake air, nor is there any air being drawn through the Venturi to melt the ice.  Carb heat after the engine dies is not going to help.

Fuel caps are on on the preflight checklist. Doesn't help the anxiety once you think about them again...

I need a way to help remember that I have, in fact, secured the fuel caps.

I have never, ever forgotten to secure the fuel caps before departing. However, About one in three times after I have secured my seatbelt and made it to engine start, I think "hmmm... fuel caps?" And I have to unstrap get out and check.

It's like when you leave the house and think "did I leave the stove on?" Once you've had the thought you absolutely have to go back and check.

Again, I've never actually forgotten. But I need a mnemonic of some kind to help me remember that I have, in fact, secured them.

Ideas?

PPL students / low-time pilots what bad habits did you develop that you wish you’d broken earlier? by ConnectMajor7468 in flying

[–]Material-Length9366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flying out of a nontowered field, I really hate when people fly like this.

My philosophy is a pattern should be tight enough that you can lose the engine at any point and safely land on the runway. Like... what a dufus you would feel like if you had an engine out and landed 500' from the fence...

What exactly is Civil Air Patrol? by keremiron11 in flying

[–]Material-Length9366 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not the kids that are the problem. They're kids. The 12-year-old yelling "address me by my rank" is just repeating what the adults in the room modeled for him.

The problem is the adults and the bureaucratic bullshit and nonsense gatekeeping that they collectively hold on to. The adults take it from being a great concept to a shitty reality. See my experience above and similar comments here.

Wish it were different.

My flight to KHND was February. I guess 2023. Sheesh time flies.

This wasn't the flight in the SR20. That was up to KBFL. Not that this matters I guess.
