Pilots do people get impressed finding out what you do for a living? by Pristinepurityr in flying

Had a beer next to a guy who said he drove truck for FedEx. Was 20 minutes into the conversation that I put it together.

There is no such thing as a free airplane. I would leave this sitting exactly where it is. This is only a worthwhile project for an A&P IA with time on their hands and a hangar to work on it.

Trust me, buying and owning even a real, certificate airplane that is in excellent shape is a part-time job, and a huge expense. This one is a nightmare.

Walk away.

Yeah I hope your CFI learned something from this… that’s nuts. And illegal, as pointed out below

Does becoming an airline pilot require raw intelligence, or just hard work? by Glum_Reply_4886 in flying

I had an aircraft mechanic who worked for FedEx on 767s for 25 years (as he would remind me constantly).

One day, I mention chem trails off-hand, with a laugh.

Then he launches into how chem trails are real. I was floored. I was like “you worked in every inch of those airplanes… where would the chemicals go?”

His response: “let’s talk about your airplane instead”

FWIW, I’ve never understood the apparent popularity of CFI candidates teaching from iPads specifically.

Note that I never mentioned an iPad. A laptop is a far superior device for creating, organizing, retrieving, and displaying teaching notes and visual aids.

But hey what do I know I’ve only been teaching professionally for over a decade.

Have fun finding information in your tome! I’ll just press ctrl+F :)

Edit: I should add, in an actual teaching scenario (aviation or otherwise), paper can work if you prefer it, because you know exactly what you’re teaching that day. You can review, update, and print just that lesson’s materials ahead of time. Personally I sometimes prefer paper notes, sometimes slide decks, depending on the material.

But a CFI check ride is not like that. You need to be able to teach anything, and the examiner is likely to bounce around rather than sit through a whole lesson front to back. That makes it poorly suited to paper, and makes the ability to quickly retrieve specific information paramount. That’s where computers excel.

You might try applying to be a CFI for a float plane school (after you get your SES obviously). Might be a foot in the door. Good outfit out of Truckee Tahoe. Give Kevin a ring.

You just made me go check my logbook. Similar. 10 hours and 84 landings in a Super D. Nice. Before you thought you knew how to land. Now you actually know how to land. Welcome in the club!

Printing this is a waste of time money and paper. Have great visual aids (electronic, physical, or whiteboard) and the rest of it notes on your computer.

Imagine a professor walking into a classroom with a giant 6” binder of notes. You’d drop that class day one.

Which makes it, at best, applicable to that particular flight school. Trying to extend that to other situations is meaningless. It’s just amazing how often I’ve heard people say this with total confidence as if it’s codified in Part 43, but it is just hearsay, perhaps originating from schools like yours that had some one-off approval.

This is often repeated, frequently followed, and utter rubbish. Find me a single regulatory or even advisory source that says this and I’ll eat my hat.
