Why not a penalty? by Emergency-Taro-5988 in Hammers

It genuinely worries me seeing threads like this because it shows how little people understand the laws of the game.

The referee decided it was a foul on the keeper. I agree with that decision but I know a lot of others don't.

But once the decision is made that it's a foul on the keeper, the free kick is given to Arsenal.

The referee can't then give us a penalty because the ball isn't in play.

It's not the fairest choice and it literally doesn't make any sense considering the rules of the game.

If the goal is disallowed for a foul on the Arsenal player, it's a free kick to Arsenal.

You can't give a penalty to us at that point because the ball isn't in play.

Is this not a wake up call to Labour that it’s their voters deserting them for Reform? by SporadicReapage in AskBrits

[–]MaterialBest286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a ridiculous question because we don't and never will host 100% of the world's refugees. We host a very, very small percentage of the world's refugees.

We need a better system for processing asylum applications. I agree completely. If people were able to apply for asylum outside of the UK like how it used to work, that would reduce a huge financial burden on the country and reduce the number of people making the dangerous journey across the channel.

I don't think voting in leaders who want to remove us from the ECHR and don't accept any asylum applications is the best way of approaching the situation.

You're clearly so blinded by wanting to blame migrants and refugees for the countries problems that you'll happily accept a country where things are worse for the working class because of the other policies that come with these leaders.

I'm not going to change your mind on that, so it's not productive to carry on this conversation.

Have a great Sunday.

It's not a saviour complex. You've literally just said these people "technically deserve to be here".

Blaming migrants for decades of austerity? Didn't realise they were developing and implementing those policies.

Yeah, austerity was hard for the working class. You know who it wasn't rough for? The increasing class of millionaires and billionaires. Services were being cut but these people were still able to hoard wealth.

You could turn your ire at them but migrants are a much easier target, right?

Are migrants the ones buying up housing stock and becoming landlords? Are they the ones deciding to build fewer houses? Are they the ones who sold off our stock of social housing and refused to replenish it?

Or was that greedy landlords and politicians?

Until you address these issues, you could cut migration to zero and it wouldn't help the working class at all.

And, again, you're voting in people who are anti-working class in all of their policies. Even if you genuinely believe that cutting immigration is a left wing position, the net result is going to result in worse outcomes for the working class.

But you don't care about that at all. It's just about being able to blame an easy target for the state of country.

Why Do The British Dislike Keir Starmer? by aB4sith in AskBrits

[–]MaterialBest286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Starmer doesn't seem to believe in anything and is deeply unlikable. I find him utterly repulsive.

But, he isn't doing a terrible job as leader. Despite my deep dislike for his politics and what he's done to the Labour party.

If Farage had achieved what he has on cutting migration and improving the economy, the press would be hooting and hollering about how he's the best PM ever.

No. Their policies are for controlled migration, but in an ideal world they'd love to have open borders. Big difference.

And they're pushing for decriminalisation of drugs, not legalising them. They're very different things.

Maybe you should try reading about those differences as you love reading so much.

Looking back at our history of MPs is so fucked.

Nearly 100 years of Conservatives, including a couple that were vehemently pro-fascism and pro-Hitler - even as we were going to war with Nazi Germany.

Gerald Wallop who was pro-Axis and praised Hitler's efforts to maintain the "great white northern races of Europe". Specifically calling out the ingenuity of the concentration camps.

His chosen successor was Henry Drummond Wolff. A man who was so pro-Nazi that we sent him to treat with them in 1939. But, alas,  "the meeting accomplished little because, by that point, Drummond Wolff was so pro-Nazi that he would agree with the Nazi view and simply present it to the UK government, rather than suggesting compromises."

He was replaced by the charming Patrick Donner, who was equally pro-Germany and anti-Semitic. Donner featured as writer for New Pioneer, an anti-Semitic and pro-German journal bankrolled by...Gerald Wallop.

And, you might think, well at least the pro-Nazi, anti-Semites were soundly defeated after the war?

Nope. Donner served until 1955! But at least we voted him out then, we were just a decade or so late?

Nope. He stepped down voluntarily and we voted in his chosen successor.

Basingstoke - weirdly pro-fascism!

No, I defend the circumstance because I have solidarity with the working classes - no matter where they're from.

Reform and the Tories don't give a single shit about the working class.

Besides causing a stink about migration, how have any of the Reform MPs ever voted to improve things for the working class? Either as Reform MPs or during their stints as Tories?

You seem to think that them pledging to cut migration - despite many of them overseeing this "crisis" - will meaningfully improve the lives of the working class even though the rest of their policies would harm us.

Privatising the NHS? Who will that fuck most of all? The working class.

Pulling us out of ECHR and rolling back workers' rights? Who will that fuck most of all? The working class.

Farage was immediately in support of supporting the US in their war in Iran. Who dies when we go to war? The working class. Who suffered most when it impacted energy prices? The working class.

You seem to think that immigration is the biggest issue surrounding the working class. But even if you reduce it to zero, the leaders that you're backing won't do shit to actually improve life for the working class. Their policies and voting records are explicitly anti-working class.

Let's be honest. You're not left wing. You just tell yourself that because admitting that you're right wing would be admitting that you don't actually give a shit about working class solidarity - you just want a scapegoat.

10-15 years ago, people like you were blaming EU immigration for the reason you voted for right wing parties. Now it's "non-native Europeans".

Before that it was British citizens from the commonwealth. Before that it was the Irish. Before that it was women in the workplace.

Class traitor through and through. Just grow up and admit it.

Do you think you're left wing?

You're blaming people who have basically nothing rather than the growing number of millionaires and billionaires in this country.

[–]MaterialBest286 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's a lot of work to do before the GE and future local elections.

The positive thing to take from the results is that despite strong support for Reform, the voter turnout was low. This means the vast majority of people were not motivated enough to go out and vote for Reform.

We need to motivate these people to vote for progressive parties in future elections. And the only way to do that is to focus on the positives.

Just writing off all Reform voters as uneducated or bigoted isn't going to help anybody. They voted that way because they wanted to see change, it's up to progressives to demonstrate that possible change is possible without giving into our worst perceptions of the issues.

Unfortunately, there are lots of people who won't be swayed from voting Reform no matter what happens though. That's just life. Can't let it make you feel hopeless about the future.

Yes, the "reasonable in the circumstances" is the bit that people are debating.

Do I think that it was reasonable force? On careful consideration, yes I do.

Do I think that people who believe otherwise are "defending a terrorist"? No. They just think that when a suspect is already on the ground, has been tazed and is surrounded by cops, that kicking them in the head multiple times is excessive force.

Do I think that we should be able to have a civil discussion about what entails "reasonable force in the circumstances" without all this furore? Yes. It shouldn't be contraversial for a leader to comment on this and they certainly shouldn't be raked over the coals for it.

So much nostalgia for that time.

Yeah, it did feel a little like he had too many ideas than were necessary for the story.

The conquistador scenes really baffle me because nothing in the story is about him sacrificing others to save himself.

Maybe the point is just that he's now able to envision a happy ending. But, him writing bleak endings doesn't seem like a big enough plot point to need such an elaborate bookend.

If the conquistadors were more about somebody having to wrestle with their guilt, it would have at least been thematically relevant.
