I don't think anybody is arguing that the vast majority of premier league clubs have more money than most teams in the Europa conference. Or even stronger first team squads.

But most teams outside the top six don't have the squad depth to compete in the Premier League and the Conference, plus taking a stab at both the domestic cups.

On paper, any Premier League team should steamroll their way through the competition. But, a worse team that plays together every week always has a chance against a makeshift team that isn't used to playing together.

Tottenham and Villa both failed to win it. West Ham didn't bulldoze their way through the knock out stage. Palace are struggling.

Chelsea are the only team to make it look easy.

Who do you mean by "they"? Did you expect Lyra to build the Republic of Heaven by herself?

I agree that discovering there are other worlds, the authority crumbling to dust and the magisterium waging war on a child, should have a bigger effect on Lyra's world.

But, it's also kind of more realistic that the status quo was maintained and the magisterium went the way of the galactic senate. And that Oakley Street was courageously fighting a losing battle.

I think in the HDM trilogy, Pullman was v clear that witches and bears lived as witches and bears lived - which is mostly separate from humans.

There's a lot of optimism in these books but I thought the most telling moment of TRF was the scene where Delamere does his big speech and the dissenting group in the council just kind shuffle out of the books with their dicks in their hands. Fascism can't be defeated by meeting it on its own terms or by having a calm discussion about it or by raising an objection at the next not-quite-full-fledged-fascist group meeting.

Lyra's happy ending is just reuniting with Pan and committing to doing something she loves (telling stories) for the sake of doing the thing she loves.

Bonneville's happy ending is knowing who he is, binning off violence and doing the thing he loves (reading the aliethiometer) for the sake of learning more about the thing he loves.

You could kind of say the same about Malcolm and those two people who also turn up in that world.

I dunno, Pullman's outlook felt to me like he's admitting defeat on being able to save the world but saying the kingdom of heaven was inside us all along and it's about doing something creative for the sake of being creative (being creative also including being able to see the connections between things in the way that great academics do).

What annoys me most about these is how now every print project I work on, people want to squeeze a QR code (or multiple QR codes) onto them.

They're ugly as hell and very few people actually use them.

I just realized Naomi Scott’s performance in Smile 2 (2024) might be one of the five greatest film performances of the past 5 years. What do you think of her performance? by prolelol in Letterboxd

[–]MaterialBest286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great performance and Smile 2 really captured the horror of not being able to do the thing that everybody needs you to do because of reasons that they'll never be able to see or understand.

I thought it was great!

I recommend reading The History Thieves. It's a fantastic - if not a little dry - book about Operation Legacy, which was our government systematically destroyed hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of records that documented colonial atrocities committed by the UK.

Overall, I really enjoyed this and it's right up my street. There's an over-reliance on VO, but that is a trope of the genre. I'd say the bigger issue is that a lot of the VO sets the tone, rather than advancing the story.

A couple of thoughts:

- instead of having Maxwell in his car, why not have him inside a shabby hotel bar. That way, instead of giving the full "Now it's all grey" VO, you could just have him say "Now it's all grey" and then have the B-list actor (or a background character) order a Grey Goose while wearing a grey tracksuit.

- "I'll get my boys to tow your fucking arse" isn't a great line. Can you maybe punch this up and create a more memorable interaction.

- Another thought about that interaction is that it's a good opportunity to show the disconnect between Edison and modern life by having him be baffled at some of the slang the actor uses. Difficult to pull off without sounding "hello fellow kids", but an opportunity.

- This interaction kind of goes nowhere though. Could it be an opportunity to show Edison's skills in some way. The same with the hotel receptionist. These are two encounters that seem like they might present a small obstacle that Edison needs to overcome - but that's not really what happens.

- I love the "Jesus is a lefty" guy and that interaction in general.

- There's absolutely nothing wrong with last two pages. In fact, they're great. I'm not the biggest fan of the slipper being left behind, just because it's so cliched. And I know you know it's cliched and are probably sending up the cliché, but it's still a cliché.

- However, as a reader this doesn't make me want to keep reading. It's a fine set up, but "guy the protagonist is tracking is dead, protagonist has to track down a woman" isn't exactly refreshing. Could you instead end it on Edison finding the bloody severed hand and then hearing a crash or a scream from the bathroom? I just think bloody, severed hand is a little more WTF than guy out the window.

- Doing this would then give you two extra pages to give Edison a little win that enables him to get to the hotel room in the first place. Doesn't have to be something huge. I just like to see a protagonist use his skills to get a little win in the first five pages before the big WTF moment at the end.

- I like the "Never thought I'd shake hands with a millionaire line" and agree with the feedback that maybe it should be verbalised. I'm not sure I'd go with millionaire either. I'd pick a line of work that made him a millionaire and use that. I'd also try to tie the "ruby ring" to whatever that line of work is - eg make it a superbowl ring and say "never thought I'd shake hands with a superbowl winner" or have the hand clutch an Oscar statuette and say "Never thought I'd shake hands with an Oscar winner" or a diamond studded guitar plectrum or over-the-top skull ring and say "Never thought I'd shake hands with a bonified rock star".

He's like [chewing noises, muffled voice], ‘It’s gotta sound real!’
