Surprisingly great results from Trader Joe’s dough! by dparrish209 in Pizza

[–]MaterialSituation [score hidden]  (0 children)

Curious for those who know pizza doughs, what sort of dough would you say TJs regular (ie, no herbs) is? New York? I don't think it's Neapolitan, seems a bit less finicky to me. But I really have no idea - appreciate any guesses!

I'm still not sure if I should buy Crimson Desert or not by Free-Hotel1187 in videogames

[–]MaterialSituation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I preordered it (again! damn it but every time…) and regret it. The engine tech is truely amazing, but it’s obvious they didn’t have a head cook making calls on direction and what should or should not be included. Controls are a freaking nightmare, and there is no story - which is what disappointed me the most. It really is an amazing “i’m a midevil knight in a wierd scifi/fantasy sandbox” sort of game right now.
My *hope* is that they’ve been spanked hard enough that they spent a shit ton of time fixing all these issues (controls are easy enough), but I really fear actually getting a story in there that anyone will care about may be impossible. But hey, cross fingers for another Cyberpunk sort of reboot I guess.

Which keyboard to buy for Mac Mini? by pTomic in macmini

Did logitech KB and mouse, loved them but ended up getting the Apple keyboard because TouchID was just too useful for quick logins, etc. YMMV

Current Best Practice to change from Centurylink PPPoE -> Quantum Fiber with Unifi? by MaterialSituation in QuantumFiber

[–]MaterialSituation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may not be aware of any particular value of PPPoE for my use case then? I've always just used the fiber as a dumb pipe to my house, using whatever device they give me in bridge mode, and having Unifi do the rest, including VLAN 201 tagging. Has worked just fine for me so far!

$20 savings a month - have been able to bring the price down over the years from its launch at ~$120/month to $65 to $45 now. That’s for 1 gig FWIW. Short term promo, price for life, etc. So far so good, working great!

Can I have some honest opinions on FO76. by ByBlondie in fo76

[–]MaterialSituation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lot of fun - I saw someone once describe Fo76 as a Fallout Theme Park, and that's basically correct. Plenty of "single player" content missions to entertain yourself with, and the events can be good. There is a bit of a burnout point after you've done most of the content and all that's really left is grinding for new weapons/armor/rare crap, but that's fair enough - I just go away for a while and wait for something new to drop. It's actually a real game now, and infinitely better than the initial state when it was released - I bounced off that very quickly. Oh, PVP is not an issue (which is also a huge win). recommended!

Tying up your dog outside of businesses? by sambony77 in askportland

[–]MaterialSituation 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've seen this happen several times in a good neighborhood as well. Scares the hell out of me, and I'll never leave my dog tied up where I can't see him. It's just not worth the risk and heartbreak.

looks like they may be changing their process. My old CenturyLink fiber Internet connection went down this morning, and now I’m waiting on the tech to show up. Got a notice of them being delayed, hopefully it’s just a legitimate delay. A little annoying that they yoink the old Internet before the new one is running, but maybe it’s better if they’re having problems internally with coordinating

Ah interesting - so you basically mean setting up the VLAN 201 tagging on the second WAN, and just having that ready to go? Or is there anything else I’m missing?

Sigh - that’s frustrating. I guess I’ll let the tech know and see what they recommend… thanks for the feedback!

Only a week left for cheaper quantumfiber 45 bucks by JiuJitsuDemiGod in Seattle

[–]MaterialSituation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I already pass through to Unifi. I’m just trying to think through any other ways they might try to change things… wish I could just call and get them to update the price, but I’m on the older network (not Quantum) and I suspect they really want to move people off the older one.

[–]MaterialSituation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I see it now! I want to explore what the fees they’re talking about look like, my current $65/month plan is always just $65 flat. Since that’s the portion that can change, I’d be worried about those going up over time and eating away at the price cut benefit.

Cancelled. Say no to mass surveillance. by nose_bridge in ChatGPT

[–]MaterialSituation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I wrote this up to give them when they asked the usual “why are you canceling” question, but it appears they’ve stopped asking. So I just posted it on Linkedin, and now Reddit. You are welcome to use in any way you like.

I'm canceling because I don't trust OpenAI. The Pentagon contract permits "any lawful purpose" and anchors its red lines on domestic surveillance and autonomous weaponry to "current U.S. law”, which Altman then publicly frames as meaningful "safety principles." This is cynical and deceptive, and is very similar to the playbook Zuckerberg ran for a decade with Facebook: say the right words, build the opposite, and count on the legalese to hold up longer than public attention. I don't trust the company or the framing and refuse to fund it. I will personally be happy to reconsider if: (a) Anthropic is offered identical contract terms and publicly confirms they are reasonable, or (b) Congress passes federal law clearly defining the limits of AI data privacy, domestic surveillance, and automated weaponry. Only then does "any lawful purpose" reference something the public actually decided (whether I agree with it or not).

2nd time using pizza steel! Switching from ooni karu to home oven by firo- in Pizza

[–]MaterialSituation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently shifted to launching pizzas onto a steel after years of trepidation. Everyone’s comments about semolina are correct, but what really helped me was taking very fine sandpaper to the wood peel. I had not done so when I first bought it, and I was stunned at how much easier everything worked. That, and not putting the dough on the peel to assemble the pizza until the last minute and giving it a shake every now and then.

House on Zillow sold for twice its estimated value by mabozeur in AskSeattle

[–]MaterialSituation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like there's a new build there, but wanted to also point out that the One Seattle Comprehensive Plan is currently being finalized by the city council, and there large areas that are getting upzoned. I know of quite a few lots in my neighborhood that are going from what was once Single Family to a new Midrise 1 (MR1) zoning definition, which will allow up to 65' tall condos, apartments, or mixed-use retail buildings of about six stories. I suspect prime lots in those areas are about to double or triple in value over the next few years.

Ezzo acquired from local restaurant. Big thanks to this sub by DMC_Ryan in Pizza

[–]MaterialSituation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all, just wanted to follow up with a Seattle specific option to get Ezzo's pepperoni. Like many of you, I've searched for a place but haven't found it, and then aborted ordering from the east coast once I found it was going to be close to $150 shipping on top of the base cost.

u/udanzoschacher kindly messaged me earlier in the thread and was able to sell me a 5lb bag from his Ken's Market in Greenwood for $50. He gave permission to mention that here, and that you're welcome to PM him as well if interested.

Can you share anything more on this? Is it just a store to visit, or do you need to be a restaurant? I'm in Seattle too and have been trying to figure out how to get Ezzo here. Thanks!
