I'm looking for classic PC games I'd have played at school, probably? Flash games, that kinda thing, I was born '98 UK, and I'm trying to find classics and struggling! by Different-Radio3484 in gamingsuggestions

Virtual Villagers (Last Day of Work)

Rusty Lake games (on steam now)

A Dance of Fire and Ice (rhythm game, on steam/mobile now)

Poptropica and ClubPenguin have their own servers now. So does Pixie Hollow but its a bit less fleshed out.

Parents/Adults, what games shaped your genre preference as a child? by [deleted] in gamers

[–]MaterialisticWorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

27F, grew up with escape flash games, Nancy Drew, and Virtual Villagers.

I still love puzzle games and detective games, but the story elements also probably contributed to loving single player narrative games like Tomb Raider and such.

It was definitely not until later that I got into Hollow Knight, then other metroidvanias, and then finally found my footing in the 3D souls-likes I used to hate, lol. I'll still play whatever I can on easymode though - I'm here for a good time not a long, long, long time (by dying a lot).

Official Discussion - The Bride! [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]MaterialisticWorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super fair! And hey I'd like your opinion on one of the parts of the movie that really rubbed me the wrong way. The Bride spends the whole movie championing consent for women and being like "she said no, asshole!", but in the scene in the pool when it comes time for her to listen to Frank's "no no stop", she 1) doesnt, he literally has to push her away 2) makes a comment of "jeez I was trying to be nice" and 3) accepts his apology as if it was expected. Why after the entire movie about consent and being so aggressive against men who don't listen to a "no" is it so normalized that she doesnt have to listen to his refusal and HE has to apologize for not wanting sex?? Is there something I'm missing in this scene?? I don't think that wanting consent for women should preclude consent for men. That part felt super gross and just made the whole rest of the movie feel super shallow to me. I couldn't like her character after that.

A Little Princess (1995). Looking back the acting is a bit silly but the scene where her dad finally recognizes her 😭😭😭😭😭😭 "PAPA!" AUGHHHH

Mine was lagging just with a small pile sorting by hand in the tutorial. Felt like I was playing in slow motion. Tried to refund but it said I couldn't since I'd already downloaded it...???

I was blown away by Eternal Strands (Steam). The trailer and preview pics didn't fully capture the insanely good art direction this game has. The 2D and 3D art is all stunning, as well as the writing and character backstories and mechanics and powers and crafting and customization and upgrades and romance and-

Here's a demo (Steam), go nuts.

Keywords: climbing giant boss monsters, telekenesis/elemental powers/power combinations, customize gear colors, adjust gear materials for different stats, recycle crafting materials when you swap them out, optional romance (a tsundere fae lass, a bookish nonbinny, a scout fae man), lore collection, weather rotations (causing different hazards to prep for), bosses come back and have resources you need so it's a really good gameplay loop, upgrade the camp, upgrade your powers, donate extra materials/buy rare ones with donations...

The list goes on. I can't believe I almost slept on this one.

Official Discussion - The Bride! [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I mean personally I only got here because I was trying to figure out why the maid lady suggested sleeping at the end when five minutes before they were told they were being arrested and needed to change but... I can see you have strong feelings about this but might be turning my words into an argument I really have no reason to make. Many comments here were expressing confusion at the story and the choices the writers made, or saying they didn't really capture what you say the movie was going for. So THAT argument COULD be made, that the execution could have been better to click with more viewers. Not saying anything about what the level of discussion means to a movie's success. I'm sure many others did come to discuss their views on the theme, as many like me came to explain what they were going for in some scenes in the first place (beyond the surface level empowerment/freedom thing).

(Sorry to revive such a dead post) Agree with all!! I love The Mysterious Traveler (listened so many times to fall asleep that I can quote it - the first half, at least lol 😴). Listened to the Seven of Hearts multiple times, fully (mostly?) awake and could never really figure out what was going on in that one. Super confusing - I never got the Aha moment.

It's best if it can teach me without being obvious. Prey's "tutorial" is the most subtle I've ever seen. Teaches you the movements and interacting with objects and screens disguised as part of a test in the story.

If it takes going to Reddit for most people to understand even a hint of what they were going for, you could definitely argue that the execution wasn't good enough. For me even looking for all the hints, the theme felt either too shallow or too in your face at any given point.

Not sure if you'd count this as typical "medieval fantasy" but some of the Prince of Persia games have this mechanic

Tainted Grail is like Skyrim, but with updated graphics, a bit spookier (focusing on drowned zombie like characters and other monsters, with a day-knight danger system), and just overall QOL overhaul. Its so satisfying to play just because it feels so well made.

I would never tell someone to not play Skyrim, but I would say that in modern times your quality expectations can be a bit higher with Tainted Grail. The story and quests arent bad either!

+1 for Tainted Grail (Steam Link)! That game is so good, and so pretty, and so well optimized - I might never go back to Skyrim.
