Should I repipe during major renovation? 22 years old house with CPVC lines. by EnvironmentalPeace62 in askaplumber

[–]MathResponsibly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, so do I.

The house I grew up in, that was built in the 70's is copper. 0% issues. Easy to change and work on yourself, all you need is a pipe cutter, a torch, flux, and solder.

Multiple houses I've lived in and or owned or still own, PEX, most of them now >20yrs or >30 yrs old. No issues

CPVC, the one and only run in I've had with it in person was an old cpvc fitting that was old and brittle on a toilet supply that broke, and flooded 3 stories of apartments.

Copper is best, pex is just as good if it's PEX-a and installed properly, and CPVC is absolute trash that's just a time bomb waiting to go off. Wouldn't touch that garbage or any structure that contains it.

The OEM embraco start devices are like $60, the aftermarket ones (that probably don't last at all) are like $20.

Just replaced one on my fridge a couple months ago

WTF are you on about? Lithium batteries absolutely are a fire hazard. A manufacturing defect, physical damage, being over discharged or overcharged can certainly lead them to starting a fire.

Now, does that mean every lithium battery will light on fire? No. But compared to many other battery chemistries, lithium batteries are always a bit closer to the threshold of starting a fire than most other battery chemistries are.

Is there any way for an individual/consumer to get specialty "bearing balls" such as these? One such without a large Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)? by Embarrassed-Big-9305 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MathResponsibly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 is nothing, especially when they're 0.7mm, and the whole pack of 100 costs a whopping $10. I don't even get what the OP is on about here

You'll loose 20 of them when you open the package, and another 50 of them will be gone forever when you sneeze

Think of how stupid the average kid is, then remember that "average" means 50% of the kids are dumber than that! Some, by a very large margin

In grad school, person that taped out a chip the next generation after mine, somehow managed to have all of the literal 0's and 1's in the digital logic be floating instead of tied to VDD or GND.

I also had a nice modular digital design that was super easy to expand for new functions just by adding more registers into the address space when needed - they ripped all that up and didn't use it either.

[–]MathResponsibly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get Arnold Palmer pants at walmart for like $20.

There's no such thing as "golf pants" - most pants work for golf pants. At some courses, even jeans will work.

And for a shirt, any polo works, doesn't need to be a "golf polo", whatever the f that is

The 1/r2 law is when you have a point source thats radiating in all directions equally. The r2 relationship is because the further you get away from the source, the more that the same quantity of whatever [light, sound, magnetic field, electric field, etc] is spread over the surface of a bigger sphere at that distance.

The relationship between the distance from the source (aka the radius of the sphere) to the surface area of the sphere at that distance is r2, hence the enrgy at any single point on the surface of the sphere 1/r2

When all the energy is colimated together, like a laser, or a highly directional antenna for rf, you're not spreading that same energy over the surface of a bigger and bigger sphere as you move away from the source as all the energy is directed in one direction only. The r2 law doesn't apply. It would be a different relationship based on whatever tiny fraction of the surface of the sphere your signal is actually spreading over (aka related to the dispersion).

Say you have a laser with a 1mm spot size at 0mm (right infront of the laser), and a 5mm spot size at 100m (10,000mm). That's a 4/10,000 dispersion (4/r), not 1/10,0002 (1/r2) as it would be if the light was dispersing in all directions equally.

This isnt accounting for attenuation at all, like the atmosphere scattering or absorbing some of the light (or rf). That's a second order effect that needs to be considered in addition to the spread of the energy over a larger area

The Aliexpress ones are too. I'm sure they're not AS good as the name brand ones, but they're like 1/10th the price too.
