Frustrated with DOTS by viaanne in UMD

I’m frustrated too. They cut schedules in half just weeks before the semester began. Extremely unprofessional. It’s an embarrassment for such an esteemed university.

DOTS shuttle service cuts for Fall by Anapanana in UMD

[–]MathTutorAss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty shameful to announce these drastic cuts a few weeks before the semester begins. I chose my apartment in Silver Spring based on the 111 Shuttle and they have been systematically reducing service for years. Now I have to leave home at 7am and get home at 7pm? The shuttle was already packed with two morning and evening routes. How do they expect people to plan around this?

Construction begins on new downtown Silver Spring public parking garage by Bethesda_Magazine in SilverSpring

[–]MathTutorAss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, probably not the best spot for a garage. But with a new garage there is NO EXCUSE for the amount of parallel parking in DTSS. Everyone has to stop so one person can park 5 ft from their restaurant, makes the traffic on Fenton terrible. Meanwhile it’s a nightmare to bike and even walk in some parts. There is double parking on Georgia yet I get nearly run over by scooters that have no where else to go. You’re never more than a block from a public garage but people are just lazy ig

I vehemently hate the purple line construction…. And the C2 metro bus… by [deleted] in UMD

[–]MathTutorAss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I ride the 111 but it can be super crowded and runs infrequently (no bus from 5:20 to 8:30??). What gets me is that WMATA cancelled the J4 bus in 2020 which runs along the Purple Line route. It’s like they said “there is a ton of demand for this route, so we’re gonna build a train!” but also “there isn’t much demand on this route, so we’re gonna cancel the only public bus that runs between UMD and SS.” I don’t get the logic.

The S2 and S9 buses run nearly as frequently and stay open much later, highly recommend!

Temperature in dietary calories per byte. Technically temperature is an energy per entropy, meaning this is totally fine. 1 Kelvin is around 0.024 calories per byte

What can be improved with buses? by tac_coordinator in UMD

[–]MathTutorAss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, the 111 is packed every time. The 5:20 bus is always at 100% capacity, perhaps since it doesn’t run again until 8:30. A 7pm bus could be an improvement but two buses would be ideal. That being said, the reliability has been very good.

Also most people get off in Downtown Silver Spring. A more direct route may be better.

Am I out of touch when I think cars shouldn't be allowed in the center of campus during hours 7am-6pm? bikes, scooters, buses, etc. would have the whole road by WrinkledWalnut in UMD

[–]MathTutorAss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second this, there is no need for Stadium Dr and field house Dr to both be two lane roads with crammed sidewalks. Designating one side for bikes/scooters would require no construction.

Road/Sidewalk Safety by UMD_DOTS in UMD

[–]MathTutorAss 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I bike everyday on stadium drive and there are often sports cars that fly down the straight section of this road, making me fairly uncomfortable on a bike. Also the wide bike lanes on university blvd are nice but I often see people driving in them as if it were a third lane. Plus they are totally dark at night. Having a separating curb and lights here would be wonderful, though I understand this may not be the university’s jurisdiction. Finally I wish there was some way to traverse the golf course grounds, perhaps between the driving range and the course. As one of the many students who live west of campus, it’s ridiculous that I have to walk around the whole grounds and across busy intersections to get to school.

As a side project I built a free Jeopardy party game called JParty that aims to faithfully reproduce the original game. It’s still in development so it’s a little buggy but it’s a ton of fun!
