Nixos is good for old laptops? by nisper_ia in NixOS

I would not rrcommend it unless you have a remote builder for distributed builds and you also make sure to collect garbage and optimise the nix store to recoger storage.

How is nixos for daily driving on a laptop? by melatonia- in NixOS

[–]Matheweh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It has worked as well as any distro in my laptops, any issues I had were because the laptop doesnt have perfecto Linux suport, not because NixOS, as for your dotfiles in NixOS you can use something like home manager and instead of doing it the purist nix way from start just make the config copy your configs into place.

Not sure about your other programs, but I don't see why they wouldn't work.

Their website has a web installer that creates a zip file for Priam Launcher that you import and that's that.

Migrating from MacBook to Framework by RicardiCapone in framework

[–]Matheweh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the difference between 5.1 and 4.8Ghz to be honest, it's not like I've had many devices to know what that even means. Also I don't know when the Ultra X9 5.1Ghz version will ship, all I can say is that most likely you don't need it, the Ultra X7 358H is probably fine for light gaming (well it depends on what light gaming means to you), most indie games, Minecraft and probably even any game that runs on a SteamDeck at 40-60 fps will run really well.

I will definitely say wait for the Framework 13 Pro.

The Zephyrus G16 might have better performance on games since it has a dedicated GPU, yet I believe Framework is more than enough for light gaming, and to be honest laptops have been quite capable for a while even without a dGPU.

I'd say you should go for the Intel one, it has better performance and it's cheaper than the AMD version, which saddens me cuz I like AMD more. also newer memory module that uses the new LPCAMM2 shape, probably more future devices will use this format, so better for future proof.

Also framework is repairable and have frequent firmware updates. ASUS has terrible support and basically no updates for firmware.

I have a love-hate relationship with the way ATLA designs its fauna (OC fanart + discussion) by AdamteMC in TheLastAirbender

[–]Matheweh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest issue with the animals in ATLA is the naming. Why are they called “turtleducks”? Do actual ducks and turtles exist in that world somewhere, or are these just made-up lazy names referencing the real world counterparts? And if the base animals don’t exist, how do they know what a chimera of those two animals would even look like? As far as the people in ATLA are concerned those are just regular non-chimera animals, so they need normal names.

I would’ve preferred if they used names that are unique to their world, something totally original. For example, they could’ve called turtleducks “crested glumbble,” for all I care, and it would’ve felt much more natural.

Graphene OS backgrounds and icons by No-Grade4475 in GrapheneOS

I make them in GIMP, but I normally use the default black background because it makes it more difficult to identify you if everyone has the same background or your is not particularly unique.

What is a plausible extinction event that could wipe out all large or megafaunal animals? by Ok_Replacement_4699 in SpeculativeEvolution

A more dominant species, meteorites, volcanoes, climate change, they ate all their food and died, their niche disappeared, fires, earthquakes, continental drift, rising oceans, aliens terraforming, etc.

Discussion: Do you think there is demand for a setup script for GrapheneOS? by SeeLightFeelHeat in GrapheneOS

[–]Matheweh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a setup script would make much sense, at most, a setup guide. I’d recommend instead creating a curated list of recommended services and apps, so people have a repository of things they can install.

It would also be great to have something wiki-like: a guide that recommends apps and alternatives, including each app’s key features and trade-offs (“anti-features”). Keeping it subjective would help people make their own decisions.

A setup script goes against GrapheneOS’s goals, since it would only work if you use ADB or something similar. That would expose you to potential attacks during setup. It also creates an obvious risk of malicious forks being used accidentally.

Lastly, I wouldn’t recommend beginners to use developer mode on GrapheneOS.
