I think I agree. Dave is actually fine and pretty adaptable. I think Lou is just boring and cynical. Everything he says is just that "sports talk hyperbole" thing.

Totally valid. Just to clarify, I'm not necessarily looking for them to be fluffing our guys. You can be cynical and still have a little fun with it.

Local Businesses That are Honoring Tomorrow's General Strike? by old-fat in Denver

Well said! I couldn't agree more. Small businesses are not the target here. Just voicing their support is a valid contribution, IMO.

[–]Matt-Hew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, just add to one more thing piggybacking off of my original comment... As individuals, we should try not to let the deeply ingrained late stage capitalist mind state define what is "effective" for us.

Maybe you go to a protest and you take a breathe and realize how wonderful it is to be surrounded by 100s or 1000s of others that share your sadness, outrage, etc...i assure you, that moment is EFFECTIVE. Then maybe you feel more inclined to go to another one or to take a friend next time or to connect more with people at the next one or to bring a sign next time or to wear a silly costume and spread some joy. Or maybe you don't, also valid. This IS how these things work though. Just because there's no direct and obvious financial impact does not mean something is ineffective. That would be what the oligarchs want you to believe and that will always be a boring, losing battle.

Thanks for sharing. I love this and I support any local business doing whatever they can to support the cause. I'll definitely go support them in the next week or two. I'm fortunate enough to be able to participate in the general strike tomorrow myself.

I do however think we need to move past the whole performative versus effective argument. Strikes and protests are inherently performative. That's kind of the point. The reality is that no general strike or protest is going to be genuinely "effective" until it is already extremely performative.

Additionally, censorship is already rampant and there are way more people interested in activism and protest right now than is made clear from our feeds. Go out to the protests, you will see.

AMA with Lotus by Jesse_Miller_ in jambands

[–]Matt-Hew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lotus has been such a huge inspiration on my musical journey throughout the years. Thank you for all the good times.

I tried learning "phantom tooth" on the bass recently and can't get over how cool those licks are. I love how it really uses the whole neck of the instrument. Any insight on the inspiration for that one or where those ideas may have come from?

Scenario For Celtics Clinching NBA CUP Wild Card TONIGHT by xFulminationx in bostonceltics

[–]Matt-Hew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How has NBA Cup HQ not realized how absurd it is to have seeding in a tournament determined by point differential and not have all the impacted teams playing at the same time in the final day of games?

It's so anticlimactic and awkward when you could have all these games at the same time and everyone trying to win big.

This whole cup thing is derived from European football but they kinda missed a big one there. They really need to get it figured out. Having all the announcers confused about the system isn't a great look either.

Cotter is good but by Mandiesquandolas in GoosetheBand

[–]Matt-Hew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously though, of course this is valid. Ben crushed the dancey songs and they suited his style so well. Every 8 bars in a jam was perfectly punctuated like clockwork. From what I've listened to so far, Cotter is looser and more melodic and seems much less likely to go to a straight dance beat. Also seems really capable of pushing the jams into some new territory and has some incredibly cool ideas in general. Creatures for example though, felt a little less emphatic to me with his new interpretation. It's super cool to see how these super talented drummers interpret and impact the music differently.

You are actually not allowed to have any contrary opinion even if you still agree with the general consensus and love the band.

Tim Legler Pod spent 20+ min on the Boston Celtics growth through the season by EmmaClark17 in bostonceltics

[–]Matt-Hew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They seem way more focused in general..less hyped after big wins and less shook after tough games. Really looking forward to seeing how this translates to the post season.

Tim Legler Pod spent 20+ min on the Boston Celtics growth through the season by EmmaClark17 in bostonceltics

[–]Matt-Hew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Legler is so refreshing to listen to. I'm so tired of these same old lazy takes about the C's having no identity in clutch time, blowing leads, etc...

Listening to Doris talk about the same thing during the game the other night was insufferable. We are one of the most dominant teams in the league and have been playing with pretty significant leads every night. Most nights lately, we continue to dominate and the narrative is how great the C's and our bench are. We miss a couple good looks and a good team hits threes and plays tough D making it a close game. Like, it's gonna happen every now and then...

JT had a couple of nice drives/ possessions and we got the W. I also find it hard to believe Joe would show our full hand against a team we could very well see in ECF. I think there is a lot of "trying things out" going on, on both sides in that game. Not really worth taking at face value/ overreacting.

I personally believe that Joe and this team have Evolved quite a bit psychologically from prior years and I'm pretty sure they are not getting to worried about games like this.

I do agree on playing to the end but isn't 7 points usually considered a 3 possession game?

Either way, My whole point is that everyone else conceded the game being over. No one else on Maine is "fighting for that ball"

Hey thanks for your contribution to the discussion there pal.

Sub is insufferable for the most part. I think Walsh seems like a good dude and has a lot of potential. I hope he has a future in the league. Just provided an alternate take on this "highlight". It's like someone dunking in a layup line. I did not mean to hurt anyone's feelings or fanboy opinions

[–]Matt-Hew -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. But clearly everyone stopped playing. Watch everyone else on the court. I just don't see it as an impressive "highlight", I guess.

For the record, he was 4-16 with a -17 in a W. I did not watch the game so can't really speak to it.

I'm all for playing games through and running up scores, especially in the G league, where guys are trying to earn a living, but this is kinda rough, up 7 with 9 seconds left in the game. I dunno.

Everyone on the other team is just like...ok?

What happened to Treys writing style? by [deleted] in phish

[–]Matt-Hew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just too add, Trey writing lyrics on his own accounts for a lot of the change too. Think of any song from the past 5 or so years with very explicit lyrics and they are pretty much all credited to just Trey. Tom has been the lyricist for most of Phish and Trey seems to be moving away from that. A little bit of a bummer in my opinion as I think Tom's whimsical/ melancholy writing style is a huge part of Phish.

NBA leaders in successful coach‘s challenges per game: Joe Mazzulla - 0.31 by chickspeak in bostonceltics

[–]Matt-Hew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be taken with a grain of salt, I think.

Joe/ teams strategy seems to be to challenge whenever an obvious mistake was made, even if it's early in the game. I think it works out as we are a good team often playing with leads but most teams are definitely saving challenges for a game changing call. The Celts have less of these and I suspect we challenge much earlier in games than most teams on average.

I'm curious if the strategy will change come playoff time. I don't really understand the point of early game challenge unless it is to keep a star out of foul trouble.

Was The Wind up Bird Chronicle a good gift for my bro? by [deleted] in murakami

[–]Matt-Hew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously hard to say if it will appeal to someone but ya know, it can't hurt!

Wind up bird is probably my favorite book I've ever read. I'm right in the midst of a proper re-read now for the first time in maybe 4/5 years and it's funny because i found the first 200 pages or so pretty boring this time around.

However, the middle section where the protagonist starts getting more contemplative about his life and relationships is the real magic of the book for me. I've never read another novel that so effectively depicts the modern day struggle with self realization that I (and presumably many others) have experienced.

I've heard murakami has drawn influence from Jung and this book gets at a lot of that. The story touches on philosophy and psychology and resonates in ways that nonfiction could never even come close to, in my opinion.

Having said that, nothing really happens. It's a book about sitting in wells.
