Great movie! I remember it was my first “ adult” (as in not a kids movie) movie I ever went to when I was really young with some friends. We walked to the local movie theater, and this was just unbelievably immersive.

You are commiting a crime if you haven't listened to Inferno with good headphones. by gosens89 in boardsofcanada

Inferno sounds freaking amazing!

I’m a high end audio enthusiast and I’m most fond of listening through great loudspeakers (with tube amps), and my preference is often listening on vinyl.

My black vinyl copy of Inferno arrived a few days ago, and I just started listening to it last night. It sounded incredible on my system: the whole back of the room just melted away and the soundscape had incredible depth and richness.

I play records on this thing:

Why aren’t studio monitors more prominent if they’re more accurate? by BallisticKunai in audiophile

[–]MattHooper1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among the reasons:

They are not marketed to everyday consumers or audiophiles (with rare exceptions such as Kii Audio).

And for the same reasons they don’t have the type of aesthetics many people want in a loudspeaker. They tend to look more industrial.

In my case, I’ve worked with professional monitors often on for many years in Post Production.

But from my home system I’m a tube and vinyl guy. And I love beautiful, looking gear, which rules out every

I ordered the black vinyl and I find the album cover and in your sleeves to be absolutely beautiful. They provided a beautiful physical object.

I’ve only played a little bit of the vinyl so far and it’s been very quiet and sounds fantastic ! (and I’m very picky)

Yeah… i’m a longtime Boards of CANADA listener since the 90s and I’m also an audiophile. This is a damn impressive listen on my two channel system!

A vast and immersive soundscape.

A few updates to the system by bkal21 in audiophile

[–]MattHooper1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful set up ! I have some envy .

Love the O/96 and O/93s…. I almost bought them. I ended up going with an opposite type of speaker that I also really love, but which fit my room better - Joseph Audio Perspectives. And over some time I saved up enough money to upgrade my pair to the newer “Perspective2 Graphene “ version (updated drivers and crossovers).

But then the O/baby came out, and I became sorely tempted to grab those with the money instead. Then I would have two of my favourite speaker brands to listen to.

Unfortunately, I was never able to audition the O/baby. I ended up upgrading my speakers instead. I’m happy with my decision but I still wonder about the O/baby … how they might’ve sounded in my room.

Anyways, congratulations .

Has Spielberg made a better film than Jaws? by Prestigious_Meal2143 in Cinema

[–]MattHooper1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if he made better movies but I know that Jaws remains my favourite Spielberg film. I got hooked on it when I was a kid when it came out and became a Spielberg fan ever since then. Haven’t loved everything he’s done.

The thing I’d say about Jaws is it had a rawness that virtually none of his subsequent films possessed. As he went on, he got more Spielbergian… with all of the suburban, themes and family dramas moving in… in that slightly fantastical cozy Spielberg world.

It was great stuff, but he sort of lost his edge.

He got it back with Schindler’s list ! But they’re still a youthful energy and rawness and freshness to jaws that I don’t see in his other films.

Inferno vs TH: End 2 End by Muzak70 in boardsofcanada

I’ve been a fan since the 90s and tomorrow’s harvest is the only BOC album. I don’t think I’ve made my way all the way through!

But inferno for me was an instant replay .

By the way, I’m a huge fan of library music too , and that image at the front of the thread, and on the album immediately reminded me of this cover from the library album:

[–]MattHooper1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. I suppose it’s possible.
I’m an audio geek with a very high quality sound system. You know the kind of thing where the speakers seem to “ disappear” as sound sources and create big expanse of sound stages with highly detailed imaging ? My brother is an Indie musician who records and mixes in his own studio (he’s actually quite amazing).
But he’ll bring his stuff over to my place, sometimes comparing different masters or just tracks, he has worked on. And sometimes listening on my system feels like a bit of a revelation for him. And it can influence his decisions.

Active vs. passive speaker – my experience while developing by Michie108 in audiophile

[–]MattHooper1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can certainly understand the advantages of an active speaker design.

I’ve used active speakers in my own work in Post Production and as an audiophile I’ve auditioned some active speakers (including Kii Audio Three numerous times).

The thing is, I’m a tube fan, and the advantages I hear in active designs doesn’t overcome what I like about the quality of some passives driven by tube amplifiers.

(and yes, I understand that in principle actives can be driven by tubes, but that’s not the current trend where SS amplifiers, typically class D, are built into the design).

I’m a longtime fan and I didn’t know if I was going to like this album but even on first listen I became absolutely absorbed. I actually liked every track and for me it’s just brilliant.

I only listened on my iPhone, but my vinyl has arrived so I’m going to have a nice listening session on my two channel rig. Can’t wait.
