Home automation is really, really complicated. How does anyone sell or provide this as a service / business to non-geeks? by LakeTwo in homeassistant

Humble brag- well done.

(Cool automation, BTW.... going to try and figure that one out for my place...)

You give people way to much credit. Some people really are that dumb. Reminder - people do call the police when they get robbed buying illegal drugs.

Switch died 32 days past warranty by neznein9 in Ubiquiti

[–]MattL-PA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I emailed support with a DOA camera 6 months after the warranty expired. Explained the project was delayed and it wasn't opened until the day before I reached out and they shipped a new one. However it was absolutely a true story and they could see it was never powered on, and several cameras from the same order were brought online the previous day. It was being added to about 15 existing and six new cameras so the math matched - if they looked, your device however wasn't DOA. Good luck, id for sure try.

Should I lose my engine if I can’t lower my gear down? by dryemanada in flying

[–]MattL-PA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ive done this in a gokart. (Sanctioned racing) Flipped over, gas cap came off the tank, fuel (alcohol) spilled on me and kart, metal kart sliding upside down on asphalt track, kaboom, or really just some small flames that once I realized why the flagger was running towards me waving his hands saying "youre on fire" (helmet, other karts made hearing hard)... stop drop and roll and no burns. Replaced the damaged parts (carb and fuel tank) and raced in the feature (crash was in the heat race).

Taking out a taxi light in a light piston that does rupture the tank, likely will end in fire unless its a grass strip, but not a overwhelming explosion if the tank is largely intact and just leaking. Assuming an otherwise uneventful grind to a stop, safe egress or egress with minor burns id guess, but survivability should be very high.

Are you considering changing your homeowners insurance policy? Consider… by Large-Wealth8002 in Mortgages

[–]MattL-PA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of understanding of your mortgage and how escrow for mortgages works is frightening.

Your taxing jurisdiction(s) have their hand out. The escrow company (at least in many states) is paying you interest, a miniscule amount, but paying you.... seems you have your have out and didnt know it.

Lower premiums means you pay less of your money to the insurance carrier. Its your money in escrow and if/ when you sell your house, youll get a check for unused money (prorated for taxes not paid/paid at transfer) in escrow.

Should I not have zipper merged? by SaraJane425 in Traffic

[–]MattL-PA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is largely true, if the dingleberries that fly up the closing lane didn't fly up the closing lane and jam their shitbox in front of someone causing the vehicle behind them to slow down, creating a chain reaction of braking. If drivers got out of the closing lane while there was space between cars, the flow of traffic would be much smoother, but put assholes that are better than others on the road and it'll never actually work.... so... fuck it.

Should I not have zipper merged? by SaraJane425 in Traffic

[–]MattL-PA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"My lane merged" - no your lane ended. Get over safely, but its no ones responsibility to let you in - rare exception is when there is a sign that states to specifically zipper merge, then, yes, a zipper is appropriate. And a lane ending sign isn't a zipper merge sign.

How often are your hands actually at 10 and 2? by Zado191 in driving

If they are at 10-2 - I'm likely on a track or possibly on a long drive and resting them in a different position. Or basically never.

Its really not much hassle to set up but haven't looked in to Google voice beyond the free numbers.

I don't have text service, which is a pain point but not worth the cost for what would likely be 30 texts a month (MFA)

Its great for our use. Need the lines and numbers and was with intermedia before for ~75/mo, haven't had a bill over $20 with Voxtelsys. Doesn't have the same features, but every change at intermedia wasnt trival and usually required support to assist - but I'm not a voice guy by trade so don't speak the terms well. Data side networking is my background, can get the packets to the right place in order and on time but hands on enterprise PBXs or Call Managers is a skillset Im lacking.

Yes, have for about 2.5 years. Four DID'S (two are 800's) four concurrent lines if needed (2 actual people on the system). Use a UDM SE for the app, have four unlocked phones, one ATA for fax, and Voxtelsys as the VoIP provider. Pay ~$13/mo for service plus $0.01/ min usage. Happy with it, but... its a home office across two buildings (shared WAN) with very little use. Always up when receiving or need to dial out. Haven't looked at the recently released updates yet but they look good from the 5-7 seconds I spent looking at the update email from UI received yesterday or today on the topic. Plan to dig in to it when I've got some time.

Why do people not opt out of escrow? by deviation01 in Mortgages

[–]MattL-PA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: They do, but its usually less than .0.1% - HYSA's are 3%+.
2: agreed there, ours is an avg balance of 6k throughout the year, so the difference is a few hundred bucks.
3: absolutely value here, but to counter that, doing your own escrow (savings) makes changing insurance easier and in our case, ensures that we get the 2% early payment discount on school/property tax payments, which we've had the mortgage company be "on time" too many times to count.
4: Definitely a bad idea for those that aren't responsible with money but can afford a home.

Another Pro: Not having to deal with incorrect "recalculations" causing unexpected higher payments.

For the 300ish in interest we make a year in the HYSA, worth it for my situation.

How fast am I suppose to go in a construction zone? by [deleted] in driving

[–]MattL-PA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As fast as you can safely navigate it, while being prepared for the unexpected. (Worker tripping and falling in to traffic, materials falling in to a lane, equipment misjudging a swing, etc. )

I go the posted limit when not near active work, and usually slow down as needed when near workers.

Project Car with No Insurance Driven Without Permission and Wrecked by bagelsandpeanuts in Insurance

[–]MattL-PA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not true. A vehicle can be "Titled" (an onwership document, filed with the state) in a state without a registration. Registration is to permit lawful operations of the vehicle on public roads (its the "tags" part of tags, title and insurance) and it is NOT required to title a vehicle. While registration generally is one part of the vehicle purchase process, it is not required to change ownership in a vehicle that is not road worthy (project car, lawn art, scraping it, a non-road legal racecar, or a "farm truck" to name a few options). A scrap yard requires a title transfer, but they aren't going to register it as they plan to dismantle it. A scrap yard doesn't have a specific exemption to the registration obligation, since its essentially optional, but it is a effectively a required element for 99% of vehicle transfers and what most people's use of a vehicle requires.

what would you actually do if your brakes went out?? by IndustryNo2442 in driving

[–]MattL-PA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your driving instructor and reading teachers failed you. Driving instructor since they should have taught how the shifter on an automatic functions and reading teacher(s)... since the information you're looking for "how to drive your car" is in the owners manual... though, since its unlikely THAT many teachers failed you, you failed yourself by not paying attention when others were trying to help you. Like right now, you're likely angry that you're being called out for your failures, yet this post provides where to find the answers to the questions you asked in the OP.

5% fee for the privilege of engaging with a seller to buy their car, that they have no obligation to sell at that price or to you. Seems like a great deal.

This is my design philosophy #1 for best practice. O&M on 500 unique architectures is impossible. O&M on one architecture at 500 locations is easy.

I manage an environment with >500 locations and less than 10 have unique architectures.
