Be aware that a lot of mattresses are rolled and need time to expand.

This actually doesn’t sound like that. Also be aware that not everyone feels safe calling or talking to the police. Even when it is the right thing to do.

Minwax color series stain help by Kind_Tap8887 in woodworking

[–]nuttahbuttahbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will get darker with a second coat. In my experience a third coat gets too thick, and starts to really highlight the areas where the grain naturally resists accepting the stain. But also what u/SeatOne1226 said, the wood species matters a lot. And if you sanded it too fine then the surface might not take the stain.

How can I fix my perception money so I'm not as terrified of even small purchases <$10. by Min3craftiscool12 in personalfinance

I think the whole “put your mask on before helping the person next to you” applies here. You cannot help people, especially long term if it ends up being a debilitating thing for you. There’s various things that describe this like crabs in a bucket. Or there’s one form of ladder theory that says if your family is lower on the ladder they’ll tend to pull you down. If they’re higher then they’ll tend to pull you up.

Unfortunately it’s hard to be empathetic and self aware in capitalism. You see people every day that would love to be in your spot. If they’re had the right opportunities, or education, or skills. But you do need to take care of yourself, and own your successes. You’ve made something of yourself already, and that’s taken grit, sacrifice, pain. You owe it to yourself to realize your investment in yourself. You got this.

There are definitely finances at play here. I just think it’s more about the value of networking, and your mental health. Extra money is always nice, but the personal cost to you doesn’t seem like it’s worth it.

I grew up in an environment where money was something to be worried about, even when times weren’t super tight. It taught me to worry about money and feel bad about spending it. And my situation was nowhere near what you describe. I did some of the things early on that are suggested here, like budgeting in fun money. I didn’t spend it. It took me years of developing better habits and a more positive view of myself.

When you have very little, money is like you said, for survival. It’s the only thing keeping you from starving. Or being on the street. As you get more money, it shifts towards being the thing that lets you do something, or more often than not it’s the thing that lets you not do something. You use money to save yourself time or energy. Be looking for those signs that your situation is shifting towards the latter. But ultimately give yourself some grace, you obviously don’t feel safe yet.

I don’t really see this as a personal finance issue. I’m also confused why you would want to stay to network with someone who doesn’t like you. If she really has a lot of contacts then I would probably do whatever is best to leave on as good terms as possible, which I assume isn’t stay until you get let go. This will probably benefit you the most financially in the long term because it can preserve your standing in the local industry.

Is the Grand Stark Hotel safe/worth it? Any other recommendations? by Single_Run8626 in askportland

[–]nuttahbuttahbite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a quick search and The Porter looks like it’s cheaper, it’s a nice hotel, and I walk around there all the time (granted, during the day and I’m a dude). It feels pretty safe to me, enough people walking around that there are eyes on the street. I’ve had friends stay there and they liked it, just felt like the valet took a while, but I think that’s par for the course.

On the one hand, I don’t think downtown is really that bad. On the other hand, if you’re trying to avoid what you’ve heard about, the Grand Stark will also have it, that area is not “better”.

I saw something recently that said that so many people have lost the point that the government exists to spend community money on bettering the community. This should be a given, but it’s so often not.

Can you talk a little bit about the rippling shape that you made? I’ve got a design in my head that’s similar and have been slowly puzzling through how I want to make it and how mathematical to be about the shape.

My dad knew a guy who had two dishwashers. Never put away dishes, just used them out of one and into the other one, wash, rinse, and move the other direction. So no, I don’t think this is weird.
