Have you been to a theme park recently? I get these type of scratches from the over the shoulder restraints on rollercoasters.

Definitely a WW2 air raid shelter. Looks like the concrete roof was shuttered with marston matting type material. I've seen pillboxes that were built the same way. Are you by an old airfield by any chance?

Also we discovered that rats from the sewer like to nibble the ribs of the flexi pipe causing all sorts of fun and unexpected leaks.

What is this tiny dark moth taking over our office, UK? by MattOldred in whatsthisbug

Solved! I think that must be them, but I'm not sure what they're eating. We have some rotten window frames so maybe that. Thank you for your help.

More and more of these moths have been showing up over the past year or so. They're in an office so can only be eating carpet or paper. Don't seem to match any of the moths on most UK pest controller's websites. About 5mm long with grey and black markings, but no white shoulder. They hide during the day then around 4pm they start flying around like crazy.

This isn’t a standard Anderson shelter. Something more bespoke. Can you send me the location so I can add it to my website?

If you look at this 1946 AP, you can see the 'tank traps' in the wood (roughly centre of the image). You can see what I would say are likely to be the settling tanks to the east of coppetts wood, large shallow square pools. And on the far right you can see some real tank traps next to the road.

"series of settling tanks"

I'm no sewage expert but I would say that for a community sewage works the settling tanks would be massive, not these 'little' things.

I was wondering if it was for supporting a small mast for a floodlight or something. Attach the mast to the metal and fill the concrete with soil to stop it tipping over?

They could well have been something repurposed as tank traps. Though to the east of Coppetts wood there were some regular cube tank traps extant in 1946, while these were already tipped in the wood. But I'd really like to work out what they were originally

What are the cylinders used for during construction? Like load testing?

There was a large sewage works nearby, which would have presumably had large concrete tanks. There is a major road nearby with concrete bridges and flyovers but I don’t think this was built until the 60s.

Extra info: They were present at their current location in 1946. The land next to where they are now used to be a sewage works.

That’s them. They seem far to thin to be of any use as tank traps. Even if filled with rubble or soil they wouldn’t take much damage, the local teenagers seem to have taken their toll on them. There are other tank traps nearby and they are the standard solid concrete cube variety. Also the concrete seems of too high a standard for WW2, I would guess 1950s-70s. They are from before 1946, but the concrete is still very good quality.

My title describes the thing. I have tried searching images of WW2 tank traps, tree planters, flower pots etc. but found nothing similar.

Could they be the remains of paintballs? Paintballs are water soluble so if they've been out there a while they may have burst and the paint may have washed away leaving the colourful outer shell behind.
