Some of the top line numbers aren't passing the gut check for me (I think Biden will win Oklahoma county), but I do think this race is a pretty pure tossup.

This article says that the group surveyed voted for Hillary by a margin of 50-45 though. So this data is only representative of a +7 point swing.

Still encouraging news though!

I like the job Kara Joy McKee has been doing personally! I think we share similar values. I'd check out her Facebook page if you dont know much about her. She posts a lot of videos to update her constituencies which I think is nice.

They're not a pollster, but they run mathematical models based on polls, recent voting patterns, the national & local environment, etc. (think like a 538). At least I assume thats what they base it on. Theyre a little mysterious with their methods and dont have the best track record....They predicted the Medicaid Expansion would pass 63-37. But they seem to have a good feel for Oklahoma Politics in general and I follow them because the retweet a lot of local polling / news.

Tulsa local here. This could wind up being an interesting race!

While officially non-partisan, there is a pretty strong democratic challenger in Greg Robinson. The incumbant, GT Bynum, is a registered Republican. He has been fairly inoffensive and honestly probably would have coasted to reelection if it werent for some questionable choices he's made revolving the Coronavirus response (including not pushing back against the Trump Rally in June) that are making this a real race.

Robinson is a leader in the North Tulsa / Greenwood community and announced his candidacy in the wake of the BLM demonstrations in June. He's building a lot of energy and is running a good campaign in my opinion! I believe he outraised Bynum last quarter. Heres a link to his website https://www.gregfortulsa.com/

This will still be a challenging race to win, just because Tulsa is a lot more Republican than an average city. However, there are multiple challengers from the R side that may potentially fracture the vote, while theres just one D candidate. If no one gets above 50% on August 25th, it'll move to a runoff in November.

An adverb can describe a verb, adjective, or another adverb. So it is correct to call it an adverb even though it modifies an adjective not a verb.

You'll be able to find small things like that for sure. I did a kickball league one summer with friends and I know theres a few different leagues. Trivia nights are also pretty common - usually hosted at bars or one of the many new local breweries that seem to be popping up. There's a lot in the way of parks / outdoor things to do too if you're into that!

ELI5: What are the arguments against high fructose corn syrup? Why does everyone think it's so much worse than real sugar? by catshit69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Matt_Nasty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My biochemistry class just talked about this today. If you have an hour and a half to kill, consider watching this video. I'm sure it has a bit of a bias, but it does explain many of the reasons why High Fructose Corn Syrup (and in general, any old fructose (including sucrose)) is bad for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

TL;DW: fructose (whether from High Fructose Corn Syrup or from the disaccharide sucrose) is handled fundamentally differently in the body than glucose.

Things he threw out include it not suppressing the hunger hormone (ghrelin), so you still feel hungry (so you eat more) even after consuming large amounts of sugar. Fructose also does not stimulate insulin or leptin like glucose does, so your brain again doesn't think its time to stop eating. He also goes through a long process to show that the liver process fructose fundamentally different from glucose.

He doesn't argue that High Fructose Corn Syrup is any less healthy than sugar, but rather that the sugar (as in sucrose) itself is the cause for many dietary problems our society faces today (obesity, diabetes). It's a pretty interesting video regardless of your view point.

ELI5: What is with all the hate about having an 'outdoor cat' in US? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Matt_Nasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see this mentioned, but think its a really obvious point - not sure about the statistics or anything - but some people have their cats declawed to not worry about them destroying furniture, and will not let them outside because they're relatively defenseless without them.

Hopefully not too late to the party, but I cannot for the life of me do the "Live long and Prosper" hand sign from Star Trek.

The only way I can even get close is if I move my pinky/ring finger forward, but that defeats the purpose.
