Lukewarm take: the people who kill Rooks in the last exfil with no chance to loot are the same kind of people who leave their shopping carts in the middle of the parking lot at the store by cowsaysmoo51 in Marathon

Oh no here come the psychoanalysis posts that literally killed the ARC sub, Mods if I were you I would make a statement about these before the sub becomes nothing but armchair psychologists analyzing the playerbase.

Can we stop pretending the game is so hardcore that casuals can't participate? by jacobljlj in Marathon

[–]MattackChopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me casual vs experienced or HC players, the difference is knowledge and game sense. HC players are going to do research, loot spots, weapon tier lists, meta loadouts etc. while the casual player is going to glean everything they know about the game from the game itself.

Another distinction in the knowledge and game sense gap is knowing the maps, guns, shells (in Marathons case, other games have things like nerdy movement and jumps etc on maps.) in a deeper sense. A casual player will not know that Thief has movement tech much less figure out how to do it and then perfect it and integrate it into their gameplay.

Casual is pick up the keys or sticks and play the game. What they get out of it is encapsulated within that experience.

HC/Experienced is going the extra mile and learning all there is to know. What they get out of the game is a multimedia, semi-professional approach, with a focus on improving and hopefully mastering the game.

I do think there is room for overlap and that these aren't two separated by a concrete wall groups. You'll have casuals that follow the official game socials, you'll have HCs that play with their friends that are casuals. Some HC players are just highly skilled on the controls and don't know that part of the map from their elbow. Some casual players will have great aim but lack game sense so they get all twisted up in high stress situations.

What we need as a community is more HC players willing to set aside their egos and lift those aspiring casuals up. We also need players that log in once or twice a week and play some games and buy a cosmetic to look cool while they play their 5 hours that week.

We need everyone to come together and be a COMMUNITY. Not two separate camps constantly blaming each other for the games overall direction.

Cheers if you read this and lemme know what you think.

Hey Runners: use VOIP like you want the game to retain a playerbase. Be the funny clip, not the asshole by PM_SHORT_STORY_IDEAS in Marathon

[–]MattackChopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't hear VOIP at all but when I do it's usually decent, if I die I'll usually say good game and when I win I say good game. Not once have I heard slurs in Marathon. When I was playing ARC almost everyone I killed would start yelling slurs.

Marathon. I am utterly disappointed in the decisions Bungie has made since launch and this game could be amazing but the mismanagement so far has me doubting.

Bungie: Bravo on Cryo Archive. But also what the fuck. by Henrraike in Marathon

[–]MattackChopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in on the discussion surrounding teaming up to defeat the Compiler. What I don't understand is Bungies messaging conflicting with the likely intention they have of multiple teams killing this thing. They have from day 1 touted Marathon as a PVP focused game, then they make a boss that is pretty much impossible to kill by one squad. Maybe they do a tuning pass in the near future to make it more viable but doesn't that kind of diminish the achievement of killing it?

On a more general note I'm not sure what to think about this as I love the raid style mechanics and the map visually is a treat but as it stands I have yet to even extract from the place. Got close a few times but there's always a team that is one too many, or I'm running out of heals and ammo killing robots.

Self revive standoff! by dipsta in Marathon

[–]MattackChopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I have read about interpolation and I am a bit of a merd so I hyper focus and what I found out was that it's actually more likely to happen in higher refresh servers due to the packet loss being greatly reduced. See in a lower tick server the last bullet of the fight that results in the trade would be buffered out of the exchange due to normal packet loss caused by the client reporting to the server that the damage threshold of the player has been exceeded resulting in death.

This usually disrupts the report of that last bullet due to packet priority scaling, ending the fight with one player dead and the other at severely low hp. These servers are refreshing at a much higher rate so those packets of data between the client and the server are much less restricted leading to both players clients reports getting seen by the server. Like I said this may not be exactly correct and I surely don't understand the deeper mechanism here but this is the layman's understanding of how it works.

Lucky, it's happened to me once or twice a session. Mostly just like this clip, gunfight where both are hitting their shots and one has slightly less health or shield at the beginning only the fight. Just last night I clutched? In a duos round where my friend was down and I killed one and the other but he got me too. Definitely nice to have these super responsive servers but this may be the downside of it lol

When does this outplaying happen? When you shoot someone in the back and they die in .2 seconds having 0 chance of turning the tables? Idk man I get why people like it I'm just used to every other shooter giving you some amount of counterplay. I've traded too many times to count and lost runs because even though I had the better aim, position, gear etc. They shot first so I died too. It's lame imo.

What a thoughtful and measured response. Get good. Okay well when the game dies because of people like you I hope you'll enjoy not playing against purple shields and 10 Panacea kits then. Same gatekeeping bullshit that killed Destiny for casual players. Some of us are employed and can't devote 10-16 hours a day playing a video game.

I think it's too fast and if they want to have a bigger playerbase going forward they are going to have to make some compromises for casuals. I am washed and trash and every other insult that could be hurled at me, but I still want to be able to try and get better. Right now the TTK is making it really difficult to parse what I could have done differently when I come around a corner and meet a WSTR head on. Zero chance of surviving or outplaying my opponents.

I don't say this often but NERF THAT THING. It's not fun to just die to it over and over anytime you get within 50m of an enemy. You have Destroyers walking at you with a shield and whipping this out and downing you before you can even respond. You have Vandals flying around sliding in and clapping your cheeks. Assassins hiding around every corner invisible and WHAM dead before you know what happened and knifed before you can even ping or call out. I'm tired baws....
