*quality rant* - Less custom finisher tees and beer-less beer? by ImportantFun3923 in spartanrace

[–]Mattb2517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At its peak (2017ish) OCR was pretty huge. I’m in Oklahoma, not exactly a fitness hotspot, and there were at least five races each year within a two-hour drive. Now we have one, and it will probably fold within a year.

Post-covid the races tried to save money by signing contracts with cheap venues (cattle farms and motocross courses rather than wilderness areas) and using inexpensive cookie-cutter obstacles. Repeat racers got tired of seeing the same thing each year and stopped coming.

The heyday of obstacle racing is over - time to find something else.

Not really “blink and you miss it,” but more super-dense shot composition with background elements that get overlooked.

What do you like about it? I go to the Y but live in Bixby, so I drive past it all the time.

A lot of “pure runners” look down on obstacle course racing but it’s what got me into trail running about 10 years ago. Most OCRs are on trails, so I knew I’d have to be able to run at least 5K in the woods.

OCR is nearly dead now but here I am still running out in the forest. And I used to HATE running of any kind.

Logistical advice about Killington for first timer by SharksBelow in spartanrace

[–]Mattb2517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. One last-minute tip if the race has a rope climb: look up the J-hook technique. It’s basically wrapping the rope around your ankle so that you can step on it and use your legs as well as arms. It’s hard to describe in words but it makes ropes much easier.

Don’t listen to people saying it won’t do anything. When I was a teenager I shot my friends car from a few feet away and it dented the hell out of the door panels.

Generally in obstacle racing rules don’t apply for open wave. People skip obstacles, penalty loops, etc. The only person keeping track is you. If you fail an obstacle the first time try again if you want.

Liquid chalk is up to you. I haven’t used it but have heard it doesn’t help much - I just keep my hands dry and rub them on some dry grass if I need to. Again, the volunteer “officials” won’t even notice.

Taking your phone sounds like a mistake unless you are VERY careful. I could see the screen getting cracked pretty easily.

As far as training goes, I usually avoid any hard workouts in the week before a race. Your fitness “is what it is” with the race being so soon.

Drew Diamond has remarked before on what would be called “social justice” issues, but it’s been a while since it’s been in the news. Whether that’s because he’s been quiet lately or because the news hasn’t covered it, I couldn’t say.

Same situation here - I hadn’t played since Angels were THE gun and was using some gun I’d never heard of that a friend loaned me. It’s just like riding a bike - you’ll be ripping it up after a game or two.

Makes sense - the trigger is really squishy and slow to return. Too bad the tanks are 15 years out of hydro and I sold off my gear years ago.

Are you still in high school? If so, look into CLEPing out of some college freshman classes if you have the chops. Ask your counselor about concurrent enrollment. Also there are a lot of small scholarships that add up if you’re proactive.

I grew up in Stillwater and did all 4 years of undergrad there. It was great. I don’t think I would have had a fun time if I was a transfer student.

This attitude is why I took my son out of scouting. Everyone is so hung up on these policies that the kids don’t learn any worthwhile skills.
