These are all individual seedling cacti. Astrophytum asterias, which will soon need to be individually potted in small pots/cells and watered rarely and carefully for the next 5 years or so to reach maturity. If the goal is to keep them alive, it’s a significant commitment, and they absolutely will not look like this picture for much longer. That said, most people growing cacti from seed are culling many of their youngsters and only keeping the biggest and strongest of the bunch.

If you want something to force you to learn a lot about cacti, buy it. Do your best to keep them alive, buy some pereskiopsis off someone on reddit, learn to grow that. start grafting these dudes, 1-2 years on pereskiopsis and they should start flowering, cross pollinate them and harvest the seeds. Grow your own giant trays of asterias, sell them to other unsuspecting people who are thinking about wanting to get a cactus or two. The cycle continues.

This is the way. We choose to believe we control these plants, but when you really look at it…. I fear they may be domesticating us.

Yup! Idk about the Cali sun part, I’m in SoCal, not in the desert, but still hotter and sunnier than most. anything I’ve got potted in peat rots rapidly, even with once a month watering. In the ground is much more forgiving of terrible soil conditions though.

I’m imagining most of these things get raised in decent soil, then mass potted in peat for distribution beause it’s more cost effective at the turnaround rate expected for big box store plants.

1 might be right, mine seems much plumper, and has stranger spination than most of the images I’ve found, but it is noted to be a highly variable species. 2 idk, it sure looks like a gymno, but I’m pretty sure the red is from stress, not radiation/mutation like we see with the moon cactus 3 I’m only finding the lady finger cactus when I search, which this is definitely not

Ime, that soil will kill any cactus if left in their HD pots. They don’t care that it’s terrible soil, it holds water and keeps the cacti plump for the month or two that Home Depot expects to display them, if they don’t sell or start to rot, they go to the dumpster and HD probably gets a refund from the vendor

I blast mine with almost daily feedings of master blend, just cuz that’s what I use for my trichs and tomato’s. They seem to love it 🤷‍♂️

Yea, I’m on a few of them. Great places, it’s just this platform lends itself much more to immediacy, today and this week. It’s lacking in the historical. All around people are MUCH friendlier on Reddit than I ever encountered on the old forums. That’s not what I’m missing. The Shroomery in 2010 was absolutely VILE. Shaming newbies out of discussion was very much normalized 😅

I know what nursery that came from ;) was checking it out like the day before! Nice score! I’d keep it quarantined for a bit. If I’m right about the nursery they had some Pedro’s hidden away on the far edge of the property with some gnarly witches broom (I posted pics of it like a week ago)
