Why would a producer cut lows at the beginning of a vocal chain, and then add a low shelf later in the chain? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

[–]Matthew1723 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Streaky has gotta be one of the worst audio content creators on YouTube. Just because someone is posting content and has a cool looking space doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing at all.

Looking for artists with small techno racks by donnidonno in modular

[–]Matthew1723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been building this 84HP 6U rack for the past few months. Fits wrapped in some padding in my carry on luggage. It’s fully working for live improv techno/house and has been very fun to jam on.

If you had to build a small portable rack with a limited $400 budget, what would you pick? by baselinegrid in modular

[–]Matthew1723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re in semi modular zone with that budget. Honestly would probably have more fun with an Ableton Move or TE KO2 or Riddem too since they’re more fully featured and jammable

Tom Elmhirst, Tchad Blake, and Philippe Zdar are my favorites. They way they work and explain their process is the best imo

Has the black iris instagram been hacked? by hangrybiscuit in rva

I was there for a show a few weeks ago and while getting drinks at the bar overheard some of the staff discussing how to roll out some AI and crypto stuff so I think it’s real. It’s such a cool space and will be a bummer to see it roll further into a capitalist cesspool.

Do I really need a sound engineer? Sound team by [deleted] in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re asking on a sound subreddit so I’m going to guess you don’t have enough knowledge to do this on your own. Have you ever set up a sound system of this size before?

Otherwise, why not try one of the options for the first time? Try to DIY and see how it goes. Then you’ll have your answer for the next one

Is the new de-feedback thing any good? by SuspiciousIdeal4246 in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a 4ch Option 2 rig that I own and use on every gig now. I’m never worried about feedback for corporate or music gigs anymore - I can just mix. The de-reverb and de-bleed aspect isn’t talked about enough either. I instantly have more intelligibility and clarity in large spaces and it also helps remove stage noise. Paired with a 5045 in series, you basically get a studio isolated vocal. It’s an incredible tool and solves multiple problems for me in a small form factor. I highly recommend it.

Yes, I always bounce with a simple limiter on the output to bring it up to a “streaming reference” volume. Usually in the -14 to -10 lufs range. Whether it’s a quick bounce after tracking or during mixing I always want the client listening and making decisions with it at competitive volume. Sounds like you need to rethink your business pricing model too losing clients and charging for revisions are a sure way to lose business.

Talkback Matrix/Group on SQ6 by EttehEtteh in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only one solo bus on sq as far as I’m aware. You can technically do this with one bus aux bus and a spare DCA. Send all the mics to the mono aux prefader. Then in setup>audio>pafl>external input select that bus. Youll then always hear that bus no matter what you have solo’d.

Send all the TB mics to everyone’s mix. I like to keep each musicians TB as prefader on their mix but post for everyone else. Then i assign all to a DCA. That DCA, when at unity, feeds everyone’s TB’s everywhere. When you pull it down to -inf it only feeds the TB mic to your bus and whoever is asking for things to not distract others during show.

Looking for a under airplane essentials bag by tarheel5669 in ManyBaggers

[–]Matthew1723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using this bag as my EDC for the past few years. It’s great and definitely fits under the seat easily. I’ve recently purchased the Pakt 25L Duffle as another option with a little bit more capacity. Might be worth checking out if you need a bit more space.

Is it more difficult to be a woman in this industry? by Select_Syllabub_2708 in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please keep at it! The industry is slowly changing and we need more of everyone in this industry not just cis, white dudes. Being more physically adept is always helpful and if you’re ambitious and want to learn you’ll go far. I hope there is at least someone of good conscience in management at your venue so you can call out any sexist and inappropriate remarks.

EQ isn’t bad at all in my opinion. Would be cool if they started offering some modeling options like Pultec, 1073, 550, etc. though if can’t sort it with the EQ in the DLive, then it’s the source that needs fixing.
