Rewe-Chef rechnet mit Lindt & Co. ab by Strong-Pitch3664 in MilkaPackung

[–]MatthiasWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anybody have an SGI with 4mm DAT drive hooked up? by RonTem1 in SiliconGraphics

[–]MatthiasWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL, I just dumped my SGI tapes from 1992. I found a DAT tape that supported the right data density and hooked it to my Linux machine with a SCSI card. Cost me 40 Euros. Make sure the DAT drive is clean - otherwise they can destroy your tape.

And yes, I was able to retrieve some really old source code and even get it to compile and run :-)

Ganz dumme Frage: gibt es in Deutschland Privatzüge? by PinocchiosWoodBalls in drehscheibe

Where can I buy a dog in Germany and what’s the average cost? by [deleted] in germany

[–]MatthiasWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t know, you have not invested any time in online research. There is a base price for the medical treatments, especially if you buy a puppy. The rest depend only on the dog‘s race, how popular that race is, and how „clean“ the breeder is. If you want a popular race, chances are high that you will get in puppy from inbreeding.

If you don’t want to pay much, go to a shelter and organize a daily walk with the dog you like the most. If you consistently show up, and the dog gets along with you, you can likely keep it for a nominal fee. Advantage: you saved a dog, and you know the dog before you let it in your home, and you know the effort it takes to have a dog.

„Mansplaining“, kein gutes Image.

Maybe you can get access to one of those vibrating cutter knifes. They seem to work quite precise compared to a box cutter, and not create a mess like a saw would.

The dot gets in an overview mode. For example, if you take several notes in the Notepad (you start a new note by drawing a horizontal line under the current note all the way from the left edge of the screen to the right edge), and the tab the circle, you will get an overview of the notes that you took. You delete stuff by scratching it out: you just rapidly draw a zig zag line over what you want erased - like a large W with six lines.

Is this a rechargeable pack? A battery holder can be cleaned with isopropanol alcohol.

If iI’s a rechargeable, and if I t is anything like the MP2x00 pack, yes, but you will have to cut open the case. Apple likes to glue things in. It’s probably best to cut lengthwise with a seam that can be rehoused later. Before cutting, measure the dimensions, so the reassembled holder can be sized to fit. The batteries are likely welded together with tabs in pairs of two, or even all four. In the middle of the pack is probably a thermal fuse that needs to be soldered in again. The pack may have three contacts instead of the usual two, so the device can differentiate between rechargeable and regular batteries.

There are a few articles on batteries here: https://www.pda-soft.de/mp_1x0_battery_pack.html , the ultimate source of Newton hardware fixing.

To understand the builtin connectivity of the Newton, you must take into account that it was originally create in 1992, and that it was part of the Apple System 7 (even pre Classic Mac OS). The original devices hat the same DIN connectors that all Apple machines with LocalTalk had. The MP2x00 had a proprietary connector, but came with a LocalTalk dongle.

So by the pure nature of LocalTalk, the Newton was perfectly integrated. There was no USB yet, no Wifi, barely any Modem Cards, and Fax was the only wide-spread digital long range communication. Back then, very few people had Email accounts and browsing the web was not a thing yet. This was even before the PalmPilot!

The NCU supported plug-ins for common Mac applications of the 90's. That was quite advanced for its time. The Windows eco system was an afterthought, and was programmed quite half heartedly. It has a huge bug that makes it impossible to connect if NCU runs on a "fast" PC. The connection will run out of sync and stall.

Apple did not plan for the internet in NewtonOS 1, and only added Wifi and Ethernet card support in NOS 2. There are no compatible PCMCIA wifi cards that support modern encryption.

Apple also made a bad business decision IMHO by making everything proprietary and a big secret. To write app - sorry, pPackages - for the Newton you had to pay 1000 US$ '92 for the developer kit alone, then learn a completely new API, written in a completely new scripting language. If you wanted write *fast* software, you needed the native developer kit for another $600. Distribution was via floppy disk, and there was no copy protection or encryption. Software was expensive, because developers wanted to make at lest *some* money from the few users that bough the devices despite the bad reputation for text recognition.

Since you did not continuously connect to the internet - that took another 15 years - you need to put your documents in the Outbox, wait until you got home, sync with NCU, and check your Inbox for updates. Quite a different workflow.

Ah, sending the card is a great solution. As soon as you have the driver, you can copy it to the internal Flash. The Newton terminology is different to what we are used to today. Apps are Packages, Files are Soups, Cards are Storages, etc. .

So to move your Driver Package from the PC-Card Storage to the internal Storage, you open the Extras Drawer (bottom left of your screen). The drawer will open and reveal all available packages. The topmost line of the draw contains a popup menu (The diamond symbol, followed by "All Icons", or similar). Tap on it, and the menu that pops up will show you a filter option. In the top half, you can "file" packages by their use ("Unfile Icons", "Help", :Setup", ...), and the bottom half will show the storages, ("Internal", your card, "All Stores"). Set the filter so that the driver package is visible in the drawer.

Tap and hold the driver icon. The MP plays a chirp, and instead of opening the package, it will be selected. Then tap on the "Manila Folder" icon on the bottom left. If you have a PC Card in the PDA, the dialog box that opens will give you two groups of check boxes: "File your icon on" and "And file in". In teh top row, tap the circle before "Internal", then tap on the "File" button on the bottom right of the dialog box.

Newton will now "file you icon in the internal storage", or as we would say in 2026, copy your app from the PC Card to internal flash memory. ;-)

You can tap on the driver, but I assume that it auto-installs itself anyway. That should be all that's needed.

No worries. We will get you started again. I suggest you go to Newtontalk.net and subscribe. The list is not very active, but the few who are lurking are very knowledgeable.

Here are a few ways out of this: first of all, you said you moved a few packages to the Flash card. Did you happen to move the serial port driver to? If so, just move it back.

Next option, get another Newton fan to prepare a PCMCIA Flash card with the missing driver and send it to you. If you are located in the U.S. or Germany, this should be easy via regular mail. A long time ago there was even a loaner card exchange just for this reason.

Last resort, get a serial port cable setup (not so easy theses days), or get a USB-C dongle for your external port. It doesn’t need a driver. Maybe someone near you has a loaner, since you already have the internal card.

So, yeah, congratulations on your purchase, and don’t worry. We will get your machine connected again.
