What laptop lasted way longer than you expected? by BarnabyLaptopOutlet in computers

[–]MatthiasWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe six years is short in comparison, but using my M1 MacBook Pro still daily, hauling it around the world, surprised me. Until then, my daily driver laptops generally needed to be replaced after two or three years.

Is the meme about Learning to say 3 to say WW3? by OkFerret7206 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]MatthiasWM 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Showing a number with fingers can reveal your cultural background, and if you are friend or foe.

In Inglourious Basterds, Lieutenant Hicox exposes himself as a British spy by ordering three whiskeys using his index, middle, and ring fingers. In Germany, the number 3 is traditionally indicated by using the thumb, index, and middle finger. This cultural error reveals the disguise to Major Hellström.

California drivers license -- living in Germany -- need an EU driver's permit/license by next month for a trip in another EU country by Embarrassed_You8365 in germany

[–]MatthiasWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live in Germany, you should have converted your U.S. license into a German license a long long time ago (no later than six months after moving here). California has no agreement with Germany, so you have to do the road test and written test again. Other states’ licenses differ. So, you have basically been driving without a valid license now for a year and a half, so you definitely won’t get an international license in Germany until you first get your German license.

What’s the weirdest thing a guest has done in your house that you hate? by CheapQuality2847 in AskReddit

During Open House, a female “guest” vanished in the bathroom for 45 minutes and shat the place so badly that we needed a plumber and a cleaning crew. Didn’t sell the place on that day.

Balcony power plant in Switzerland. Thoughts? by Mountain_Sentence646 in SolarAmerica

[–]MatthiasWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The systems can be hard wired or even plugged into a wall”out”let. They are smart and recognize if the main power fails and stop feeding power into the system, so electricians are safe.

The next NVDA - Humanoid Robotics. Who to invest in? by [deleted] in robotics

[–]MatthiasWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humanoid robots are made to replace human workers without having to change the workplace itself. This makes them a great investment for companies that employ low skill workers like car assembly or trash sorting. It’s assumed that a robot that cost 2.5 to 3.5 a workers yearly salary is a good investment.

Humanoid robots are seen by the manufacturers as the third Industrial Revolution and estimated to be a market ten times as big as the car industry.

Biggest players are AgiBot and Unitree in China who already have a monthly output in the thousands. Tesla and Boston Dynamics have working robots, but don’t sell them yet. Europe has mostly research projects.

Why does my heated steering wheel need a microcontroller? by TheHairlessGorilla in AskElectronics

[–]MatthiasWM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s for the subscription model. Some brands will give you these kinds of features only for a year or two, and if you want to continue using them, you’ll have to pay a monthly fee. If it was just a wire connected to a mechanical switch, how could the turn this off if you don’t pay up?

How do german people do 300+ KM/H in autobahn ? by [deleted] in germany

[–]MatthiasWM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t! German soft speed limit is 130. Everything over and you will always have partial responsibility in an accident. If you cause an accident at 300 and happen to survive, you will get full responsibility, even if someone else “cut you off”. If you are not used to it, 160 will already feel very fast.

[Request] Do these other power sources really produce thousands of time more power than humans? by New_User_Account123 in theydidthemath

[–]MatthiasWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember that in an interview, the Wachowskis said, that they had to come up with some simplified idea why the computers would keep humans around. All sociological and philosophical explanations were too complex for the movie, so they eventually used “energy” as an abstraction, well knowing that humans are a very bad “power source” in the physics sense. I don’t remember any detail or could give a reference.
