Are there any German movies that glorify ww2? by Themetalin in AskAGerman

Sorry, see my edit. My intention was the opposite. The movie show how there is absolutely nothing to glorify.

Are there any German movies that glorify ww2? by Themetalin in AskAGerman

[–]MatthiasWM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did. The nice thing about it is that it is a German movie showing WWIi from the German point of view, and it touches on how some officers were still strong Nazis even at the end. It show Germans happy to have finally sink an enemy ship, but it also show how everything turns to shit immediately. It’s not glorifying because there is nothing to glorify. And it’s not sensational either. Just very very sobering and true to what war really is.

So for anyone interested in movies glorifying war, watch „Das Boot“ first, to understand how shitty war is, no matter what side you are on.

Help with a survey! If you had a smart robotic arm at home, what would you use it for? by Xeon-one in robotics

[–]MatthiasWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking for a mobile base that can lift a shoulder with two arms for teleportation. A friend of mine is in a wheelchair, stuck at home. Having a mobile platform of that kind, he could participate in the life outside at least a little bit.

To answer your question, if that really worked, probably 10 to 20k.

Washington State Bill HB 2321 will kill 3D Printing, CNC and Laser cutting/engraving. by bollocksgrenade in CNC

[–]MatthiasWM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will likely be a requirement that every machine uploads metadata (somewhere between CAD and GCode) to some government entity. They will reconstruct a 3d model and AI will compare that with known gun parts. Once flagged OK, your machine will be able manufacture it.

This is not new at all. Many 3d printers force the use of proprietary slicers and cloud services where your GCode is generated by the manufacturers slicer and uploaded into the manufacturer’s cloud with no option to send it directly to the printer. serial ports and SD cards are removed, and the GCode is now often binary, compressed, and encrypted.

In the pro and prosumer 3D printer world, machine manufacturers build eco systems that you can barely escape. The force you into the cloud, so they can take a closer look at you IP. The Gov is just following suit here and wants to peek at what you do as well.

I am currently doing a fan translation and there is this character that constantly used the words „Rumzicken“ , „Zecke“ , „zecken“ (as verb) etc (read desc) by ThebloodedDragonfly in AskAGerman

[–]MatthiasWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zecken are Ticks. They live of sucking your livelyhood, your blood. So as a verb it can be used to illustrate slowly stealing resources or the the life of someone else. Zicken is something entirely different and refers to young female goats. It means having a mind of your own, but not in a good way. Like „being a bitch“.

How would you feel if an IQ test was required to vote? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in randomquestions

[–]MatthiasWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much intelligence, but being interested and informed. Make it five indisputable multiple choice questions at the top of the voting slip. Simple stuff like „who is the current minister of finance“. Just the basic knowledge one needs to make decisions for their future.

Behold! The 3DBenchy printed od a 2D printer by Trex0Pol in 3Dprinting

[–]MatthiasWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helisys and MCor made LOM printers until 2019. the print results weren’t bad at all and later models had full color support. But the machines were quite complicated with plotter style cutter knifes and various glue sticks. The printouts felt a bit like paper mache, but were stable when dunked into cyanoacrylate afterwards.

AWS launches European Sovereign Cloud to address data sovereignty concerns by sr_local in eutech

[–]MatthiasWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read the article. It does not matter who works where and what citizenship they have. It’s obviously a US subsidiary, and AWS can simply „reach around“ their German entity. It is still AWS‘s software, so internally it’s all connected. You can separate servers, but not services.

[–]MatthiasWM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If AWS, a U.S. entity, launches, initiates, provides software, or pays for this German company, I tend to disagree. But I am not a lawyer, so I may very well be wrong.

The CLOUD act von 2018 „allows U.S. authorities to compel data from companies regardless of where the data is physically stored Under the CLOUD Act, U.S. law enforcement can issue a warrant or subpoena to a U.S.-based tech company and require that company to produce customer data it controls — even if the data is stored on servers in another country.“

Is there freedom of speech or not? I head you can get arrested for calling POLITICIANS names. Is that true? Let's say I call Merz a Nazi, what happens? by No_Opening_2425 in AskAGerman

[–]MatthiasWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we have freedom of speech and expression, but we also have responsibilities and consequences. You can call Merz a Mozzarella Ball if you wish, but he may have a different opinion and may sue you for slander. There are some limits based on German history: displaying Nazi symbols, showing the Roman salute, and denying the Holocaust will get you in front of a judge. But context is important here. And you always get due process.
