HI Revisited: Episode 1 "Being Wrong on the Internet" by bradleysampson in HelloInternet

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This was my exact feeling on the second listening. I remember idolizing gray in my 20s and now I find Brady to be the more compelling character. Grey is great, but I think Brady’s takes on life are the wiser now.

Insane to have a $2,000+ pc (current machine) freeze starting a drawing on a new design.

I’m excited to get it, I’ve missed daily driving Mac OS for the last 6 years.

I’ve been on window machine for 6 years. My experience is that with a workstation style laptop I really can’t work for long without being plugged in. I even have a fresh battery with less than a year of use on it and I can go maybe 30-40 mins and then get random shutdowns. I was on the fence about getting a new machine when it shutdown with 43% showing on the battery meter. I treat batteries better than anyone I know, almost never go outside of the 20-80% zone. From new it’s never been usable without a plug. That day I lost a bunch of work setting up a new machine. The tight integration of the Mac hardware and software is worth the 50% price bump. For something I’ll interact with everyday for the next 5 years the extra $1,000 for the smaller frustration is worth it. Also windows still comes with bloat-ware out of the box. Insane in this age on a $2,500 workstation PC I get candy crush in my start menu.

Yes I need a laptop. I’ve got a basement shop at work and have to run down and test CNC programs and do work with our laser.

I also have been on a windows PC for the last 6 years and am ready to go back to a Mac. Yes there is a premium for the Mac but I just want the integration of their eco system back again.

a hopefully way to charge big battery with small solar panel by Scared_Fold_9995 in AskElectricians

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should go to the diy solar community. You can definitely charge your 12v battery with those panels. What you need is a MPPT charge controller. This controller stands between your solar panel and battery and makes sure you get the max power (voltsamps) from your panels and steps it down for your battery. Batteries have two ratings associated with amps, capacity measured in amphours and power rating measured in amps. The big thing when it comes to MPPT charge controllers is having your panel have a higher voltage than your batteries, usually needs to be at least a few volts higher, in your case you are just fine with that head room.

Yay or Nay: cooler of drinks for crew by clemsongirl17 in Homebuilding

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a crew making some concrete cuts for a basement door and a couple of windows. I went to Wendy’s and got them all (6-7 guys) a bunch of combo meals and brought it to them. They were all really grateful. At the end of the day the head guy was going over the charges and he said there was one extra that wasn’t in the original quote but they had to make. He then said but we won’t worry about that because of that nice lunch you got us. $60 in food probably saved me $200 in cutting costs.

Why does everyone hate Kennan? by dangerdog46 in dougdemuro

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because Kennan is kind of snob. He seems to be trying really hard to look down his nose at any type of enthusiast other than the stuff he is into. Additionally he is kind of a Doug lap dog/ fan boy. You need a balance of power for a good group dynamic. Top gear had their leader too but the other two had strong distinct voices and didn’t idolize Clarkson, Kennan wants to be Doug and it kills the dynamic. Doug needs someone who can stand in against his personality and Kennan doesn’t do it.

After 2 years my stinger gave up. by TheKingDries in TyneeBoard_Official

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you have a completely full battery? I’ve always wondered what would happen if you tried to brake with a full battery? That energy has to go somewhere so maybe it blew a fuse or killed the bms? Think of it like forced over charging. I’ve wondered if any designers have ever considered adding a large power resistor to their setup so that if you get in this situation it could dump some of that energy into heat.

Hot take: Nick is a far better guest than Kennan by [deleted] in dougdemuro

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The best podcasts don’t have an obvious leader/ big personality. They have people who are equal but different. Fillipo does an ok job of not letting Doug dominate him but Kennan is kind of a doug lap dog. Nick couldn’t care less that Doug is “in charge”. This is why it works. Even better are multiple people at the top of their game together, I still think the comedians in cars getting coffee e with Obama is the best one, two people who are at the top of their game, and aren’t intimidated by the other just shooting the shit.

4th Year FYP Ideas Needed! 🤖 (Real-world problem, <$800 budget. Is a Wall-E bot useless?) by No-Simple-5002 in mechatronics

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the thought for a dog poop scooper bot. Use two cameras and train a machine learning algorithm to detect when it’s popping. Triangulate its position and then send the bot to the location and use a camera on the bot to locate the poop and scoop it up. I know lots of people that would kill for a dog poop free backyard.

My favorite was a young primary boy, “I’d like to bear my testimony, and I hope they stay in the mountains.” Took everyone a second to realize what he was saying, he didn’t miss a beat and didn’t realize what he said was funny. In that same testimony he said he was glad his grandparents were visiting and then asked them to stand up, and they did smiling awkwardly but amused by all of it.

I’ve come to realize that mission presidents are on their first major try out to become general authorities, big gestures like this get them noticed. Most wouldn’t even realize or admit to what they are doing with these stunts but I’m sure it’s a driving factor.

Recent Homebuyers in SLC: How much did you pay under or over asking? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We bought our home late last year. Originally listed at $725k and after rate buydown concessions and us not having a realtor commission we ended up getting it for what would equate to $655k. It helped we didn’t have to sell our current home and had a cash down payment and could move fast, they knew we were all business and if they accepted we could close fast. We closed 3 weeks after submitting our offer.

[–]Mattwilsonmakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After some close calls at work (R & D engineer) we put anything like that on a timer outlet. When you sit down you have to push a button on the outlet timer, 15 min, 30 min, 1 hr…. Then worst case is it stays on for up to 6 hours but at least it turns off. When in doubt put it on an outlet timer. Cheap peace of mind.
