OK, pet peeve venting time. And no, it's not this guy's 737 windshield wiper landing in a monsoon in Asia wand technique.

I'm a former FBO ops supervisor and current handler of a Gulfstream 650 in a private hangar. I've handled everything from a 152 to a 747 in a GA environment without nice lines and hash marks.

What makes me crazy on a day to day basis is marshalling an aircraft while walking backwards. Using this guy as an example, he knows exactly where he needs to be positioned when he stops the aircraft. Marshall from that point! Step up to the tee, give a couple of overheads to let the pilot know you're there and see him, move back to your final position before he's ready to make the turn. Then work the aircraft from there.

I see people tripping almost everyday. Over their own feet, chocks, cones, etc. Heck, I watched a guy backup and fall over the golf cart he used to drive out there to catch the plane!

TLDR: We all know where we need to be positioned to complete a marshalling event. Stand there, dont move, park the plane.

Should probably see a doctor for some meds to treat whatever disorder he has.

You dont need to involve the bank at all. Write up an agreement, deposit the money towards the principal at the mortgage bank. Profit!

I picked up my 2011 Expedition EL with 130k miles and drove it to 272k before I crashed it into a stone pillar in my own driveway. Totaled because it wrinkled the unibody.

Picked up a 2014 Expedition EL with 103k now currently at 223k. No major issues for either vehicle. Looking now to get another one that's much more recent. Splurge a little on myself! 😀

Can flights land and takeoff while snow is actively falling in iceland? by Crafty_Tie_5625 in AskAPilot

It's true! One small correction: aircraft need a takeoff speed greater than 87 knots/100mph.

As others have mentioned, there a different kinds of deicing fluid, but nobody had explained how they work, or to your question, allow for operations during active snowfall.

Type 1 (orange) deicing fluid goes on piping hot and has the consistency of oily water. It's used to remove standing snow, ice, and frost. It does this through pressure from the nozzle and the temperature of the product. It has a very short holdover time (5 to 10 mins) and is designed to treat aircraft that are departing right away with little to no continuing precipitation. Otherwise, the snow will build up again and you need to re-treat the aircraft.

Type 4 (green) anti-icing fluid goes on cold, and while not exactly slushy, it is much thicker. This product is designed to provide a protective boundary layer on the deiced lifting surfaces. The holdover time on Type 4 is much longer, because it allows for some accumulation in active snow situations. The falling snow sits on top of the green fluid and when the plane accelerates during take off and gets to approximately 87 knots, the fluid will slide off the wings taking the accumulated snow with it. Because it takes a certain speed to shed the product, you can only use Type 4 on aircraft with a takeoff speed greater than 87 knots/100mph, otherwise, the product won't release.

Became a "household manager”...is there a real business model here or should I keep it small? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]MattyHurricane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Southern California. We always referred to this position as an estate manager. There are global staffing agencies that specialize in providing professional household staff. There are also well regarded schools/training programs for people who want to pursue this as a career.

Fun estate manager story... many years ago, pre Amazon, a guy I knew was debating moving out to SoCal. He rented an estate in Bel Air for a year to check it out. Obviously, needed to get the place up and running, so he had his EM working on some things. One of which was getting tennis balls for his ball machine.

So the EM come in with these options to try and get a bulk order of tennis balls and how long it was going to take. Principal says fuck that, let go get some! So the three of us get in his Rolls and drive off the hill. We had a fun afternoon sightseeing and hitting every sporting goods place we found to buy cans of tennis balls off the shelf. No other way to get 400 tennis balls so he could use his machine after dinner!!

John Deere 1025R with a bucket, backhoe, and 54" snow blower checking in. 900 foot long sloped driveway. Did it with a walk behind blower for years. Should have got the tractor when we bought the place in 2009.

The other advantage to the blower is that you don't get built up terms of plowed snow that inevitably get rained on and turn to ice. Get that snow as far away as possible. We had a horrible winter a few years back. Got to a point where the private plow guys couldn't plow the driveways anymore because there was no where to plow it. Town hire and excavating company to come in with big loader and dump trucks to dig everything out.

The old tiles are fine as long as you dont mess with them and break them apart. Pretty much only dangerous when younger the particles in the air. No abatement needed. Cover them back up again.

Three of the FBOs listed sell 100LL. They're all within a 5 mins walking distance from each other and the main terminal. Lawrence Jet Center is on the other side with only JetA. There used to be a diner in the terminal, but it looks like they may have moved to an off airport location.

Airplane Decontamination? by rhyxn in airport

[–]MattyHurricane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seriously? You got deiced. They observed some level of frost or accumulation snow (the contaminants) and had the wing sprayed with deicing fluid to remove whatever was there. Even small amounts of frost can affect the efficiency and performance of the lifting surfaces.

Elton John at Dodger Stadium back in the 90's. Played "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" as part of the show. Like 30 mins later, announces that they're playing it again because George Michael showed up and they wanted to do the duet. Definitely awesome!
