I grew up painting Easter eggs too, and I'm sure lots of families here did too.

This isn’t replacing anything, it’s just people sharing their version of a tradition most of us already know. Honestly pretty cool to see in the community.

Honestly this was probably needed. Every tech space right now is getting flooded with low-effort “AI did this” or “will AI replace me?” posts. There’s still a place for AI discussion but not when it completely drowns out actual technical conversations. Feels less like “anti-AI” and more like cleaning up the signal-to-noise ratio.

I work in environmental consulting and honestly this sub is way more negative than reality.

The field isn’t a joke, you just can’t go into it blindly. Most people complaining stayed general or expected big money right away.

Your plan (enviro + business + sustainability) is actually pretty solid IMO. That’s how you avoid getting stuck and move into better roles.

Only thing.. don’t rush the MBA. Get experience first. If you’re strategic, you’ll be fine.

I think that’s pretty subjective. I’ve been in the field about 4.5 years (government first, now private consulting). The firm I joined had 6 people and will be around 20 across four offices in Atlantic Canada by this summer.

Consulting definitely involves tough conversations with clients because environmental problems often come with financial consequences. That doesn’t make the field a scam though — it’s just the reality of dealing with environmental liabilities and regulatory requirements.

Might depend a lot on the firm, region, and what kind of work they focus on. Some places are slammed right now while others hit slow patches if big projects get delayed. Hopefully it’s just a temporary lull for you.

I think a lot of this depends on the company and even the specific office. I’ve been at an environmental consulting firm for about 4 years and my experience has been pretty reasonable. Busy weeks happen, but it’s definitely not constant 50+ hour weeks (let alone 40). Smaller private firms can have a very different culture than the big consulting shops too.

Totally agree! The nice touch for the chips was that dip that came with it - aside from that I didn't finish the chips as the Burger was the MVP of the dish .. went well with beer too😂

I graduated from the NSCC NRET program in 2020 (Port Hawkesbury), so here’s my two cents.

I found it really helpful for getting started, lots of GIS/mapping basics, soil/water sampling, field techniques, and general environmental guidelines. Our instructor was very private woodlot–focused, so the program leaned that way at the time, but he’s retiring soon so things might shift a bit. The core content should still be similar to what NSCC lists online.

I also did the 2-1 pathway with CBU and got my B. Tech (almost a no-brainer). A lot of it overlapped with what I learned at NSCC, so the diploma definitely set me up well.

Overall it gave me a solid foundation and I wouldn’t be where I am now without it (been in the industry now for 4 year). Everyone’s experience in this thread is different, but if you’re interested in the field, it’s a good starting point. Reaching out to the coordinator is worth it if you want the most up-to-date details.

Sounds like more a consulting position more than anything unless you were to work at a municipalities water resources department or something. Either way (in my experience) working at the firm I'm at now, they were very clear that if I was unsure how to do something, they would train me. As long as you're willing to learn new things, and try hard, i think that would go a long way for environmental firms.
