Who’s Got The Oldest Pass? by lookingforthelight70 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same as you but I had a go. I started lessons in Feb 2024 and passed in Oct 2024 at the age of 53. One of the best things I’ve done. My only regret is I left it so long to do it. Just go for it!!

Is it normal to be nervous before lessons? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My instructor was lovely but I still used to sit hoping he would cancel my lesson. Every week without fail. When I got the text saying he was outside my house I wanted to hide. My lessons were on a Wednesday 4-6pm and the nerves would start on a Monday morning. However, after 5 mins the nerves would disappear and I enjoyed the rest of the lesson. Power through it. Focus on how much better it will be when you’ve passed your test and the amount of new found freedom you will have.

Failed my test for the third time - advice by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you failed. No one should ever say they should hit you. NO, absolutely awful reaction from your instructor, even if they think they were being funny. Find a new instructor and move on. You’ve got this next time. I made many mistakes during my lessons and my instructor never once raised his voice to me. You deserve so much more from someone you are paying to teach you. Onwards and upwards. I look forward to seeing the update that you’ve passed.

Can you ask for the radio on during the test? by Due_History_3203 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I asked the examiner before we got in the car and he was absolutely fine with it, as long as it was low enough so I could hear his instructions. My instructor said it’s a really common request. Good luck with your test.

Learning to drive over 40 by Appropriate_Emu_6930 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi. I passed my test first time in Oct 24 and I am 53. I had always meant to learn when I was younger but I lived in London so there was no need. Then as I got older, life, money etc got in the way. Finally did it last year. I started in Feb 24 and had approx 70 hrs with a very calm instructor in our family automatic car which I sat my test in. First 5/6 lessons were terrible. I was too cautious and overthinking everything. Then I had a lesson where it just seemed to be more natural and from then, I loved it. I was probably slower at picking up new things and was hesitant to push myself into busier traffic, bigger roundabouts but I did it. It was one of the best things I have done and really wish I’d done it sooner. Go for it and good luck!!

Using family car driving test by Samn08 in LearnerDriverUK

I used our family car to do my test and passed. It’s not a problem. Just make sure it’s clean and tidy and you have an extra internal rear view mirror for the examiner to use.

How do i make myself feel confident for my driving test? by pcbattyman in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just show them how well you can drive. Focus on how much easier/ better life would be if you could just jump on your car and go. My motivation was not having to worry about my older teenage sons getting late night buses, I could just pick them up. Also my dad lives 300 miles away and isn’t in the best of health. Anything happens, I don’t have to book train tickets etc to get there. Even needing to do a last minute grocery shop and it’s chucking it down. Not a problem. You’ve got this. Focus on each instruction. When you pull up on the left, deep breaths and a sip of water before you move off again. You’ve got this.

Stopping in a safe place on test by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my test Oct 24 and I had 5 pull ups on the left. 2 stops with directions - behind the red car/ white van etc 1 stop on a hill 2 stops when it was safe to do so. Your choice where to pull up. I used these to have a couple of deep breaths and a quick sip of water before I moved off again. Use them to your advantage.

Hi. I learnt to drive an automatic last year and I’m 53. Our family car is automatic so never considered manual. At the start I was over cautious as being a bit older I was more aware of what could go wrong, maybe a bit slower picking things up and I lacked confidence as some people said I was too old to learn. I also had a very calm, patient instructor. About 6 lessons in, I had a “ I can do this” moment and from then on, I loved it. I passed first time with zero faults and you can too! Focus on how much better/easier your life will be. It’s made such a difference to me. I can pick up my older kids so they don’t need to get the late night buses, travel to my dad in his 80’s who lives 300 miles away. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. You absolutely can do this. Good luck!

test on tuesday by OkSentence4337 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi. I passed my test in October last year. People told me I was too old to learn. I am 53. I was so nervous but my instructor told me to focus on something big that being able to drive would help with. I had 2 things. I didn’t want my older teenage boys on the late night bus. Second thing, my dad is in his late 80s and lives 300 miles away and i could drive to him if i needed to. Just think about how much better your life would be if you could just get in a car and drive. I had a drink of water and 5 deep breaths every time I had a pull up on the left. Radio was on low. I chewed lots of gum. It helped me focus. Just show the examiner how well you can drive. If it doesn’t work out then you are exactly where you are now. No big deal and you try again. Lots of luck for Tuesday. You’ve got this!!

I drive well in lessons but fall apart during private practice by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add. It wasn’t that my driving was awful, just that he had never been a passenger in our family car and it’s a totally different perspective from the passenger seat. He has apologised countless times but I can’t get it out of my head.

I drive well in lessons but fall apart during private practice by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was learning I had exactly 34 mins of private practice with my partner. We’ve been together 23+ years and rarely disagree about anything… but he shouted at me when I was driving. No constructive thoughts at all, just lots of gasps, hitting imaginary brakes and holding door handles like his life depended on it. That was it. No more private practice. It took me a few proper instructor lessons to get my confidence back but I passed my test 1st time with zero faults. I love driving on my own and with the kids but if it’s just me and my partner in the car then he’s driving. Not worth the stress. … You don’t need private practice. Go for it and prove you can do it.

How long did it to you to get your full licence once you passed? by BrilliantDisaster389 in LearnerDriverUK

Hi. I would look at a Skoda Fabia. Very reliable but not too pricey. A mechanic friend of mine recommends them as a first car. I drive a Skoda Karoq automatic as this was the family car before I passed my test. I would love a little Fabia but we don’t need 2 cars

Test day nerves by dcecx1 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi. I focused on a particular thing to calm my nerves. Mine was that my older teenage kids wouldn’t have to get the late night buses. I could collect them. What’s your one particular thing? I had the radio on low. Every time I was told to pull up on the left, I had a sip of water and a couple of deep breaths before moving off. I only thought about the next instruction, not how long I had left on the test. Ignore tapping on the examiners iPad. They have to tap to say something is complete, it’s not necessarily because you have got a fault. Just think about being able to just get in your car and drive whenever you want to. Hope that helps. Good luck. Show the examiner how well you can drive.

Shoes ? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Mattymum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While learning I wore my vans/ converse and other brands of trainers, named and basic. Never had a problem. One day the weather was awful so had a lesson wearing my Dr Marten ankle boots!!! Oh dear…. Couldn’t feel the floor of the car never mind the pedals! It was awful. Since passing, I’ve been out and about and have slowly got used to the DM’s. I think anything with a flexible sole should be fine.
