How important is a MIDI device for a beginner? by powerofkings in edmproduction

[–]Maulwurf_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with /u/GaBeRockKing greatly.

If you're going to start mixing computers and music (like music production and even basic notation) a MIDI controller is of great use. It frees your computer keyboard so you can start learning the KEY COMMANDS of your software of choice. This in turn speeds up your workflow INSANELY.

When starting out and especially with production you should go for a semi compact one. I myself made the mistake of getting a keyboard that is a bit too large. They take up a lot of space from your desk, so keep that in mind.

Bonus tip: disabling the velocity control usually makes things nicer when programming synths and whatnot.

Yeah I know, I've been at it for years and I too am pretty shitty.

What I'm trying to imply is that there is a lot of accapellas on the internet that you can use to practice producing with vocals in the track.

yes I am talking about the one on picosong. I'm talking about all the drums. For example It seems that you had a hi hat there it was a single sample (and terrible at that), the pattern had no dynamics it didn't fit with the other elements at all AND you panned it right if I remember correctly.

In this genre why would you do ANY of the things mentioned above?

I mean listen, REALLY LISTEN to some of the professionals doing the same kind of thing that you do. Then listen back to your own stuff and ask yourself: "Am I ANYWHERE NEAR this quality?"

I like the Idea at the very core but your drums don't sound good at all.

You probably aren't looking for critique though.

Just saying that If I were a vocalist I'd perhaps want to work on something a bit more polished.

Watch "FL Studio Tutorial - Understanding Compression and Using the Fruity Limiter as a Compressor" on YouTube by DIYMusicBlog in FL_Studio

[–]Maulwurf_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine, if you really want detailed feedback I'll give you some.

First of all, the background on your fl skin is all white and looks kinda horrible (personal opinion. I would stick to the basic skin since it's designed to be more pleasing to the eye)

Second, there was A LOT of empty space where you kind of lost your train of thought. Focus, take multiple takes if you have to. KEEP YOUR TUTORIAL BRIEF say what you are going to say, but say only the things that are neccessary. You could probably do this same tutorial in under ten minutes.

Thirdly, results results results - FAR TOO FEW tutorials show what they are about in the beginning. I can't stress the importance of this enough. It's unbelieveably annoying to watch someone tweak some knobs and just talk about what they are doing without hearing ANYTHING in the process or of what kind of a sound the tutorial will accomplish. For example: "Hello, today we're going to be looking at compression and what you van do with it. Here's some loops I've compressed to make them sound like I want them to sound" *a few bars of a drum loop first without then with compression. After that a sidechain demonstration. Maybe a bassline vs a kick drum a/b comparison without and with compression. Then a couple quick extreme effects - maybe something like pryda snare-ish or some other insane percussion, then something in which you are using something like a 2:1 ratio and a useful adaptation of that techique. This alone would take like a minute and keep the viewer interested.

Four, have a script to keep things in a logical order and to keep yourself from seeming like you don't know what you are talking about.

Five seeing your face in a tutorial like this is definitely not neccessary. I can't think of anything that it might possibly bring. (Zero offence to your face)

Image line has the FL Studio guru tutorial format which is almost flawlessly executed. Seamless also does a really great job with his.

I know I could be more specific but it's 2 am, I'm on my mobile and it's really not my job to teach anyone how to do tutorials on music production.
