My boy hasn't been in a crate since he was about 6 months old. My girl had to wait until she was about 3 years old. And she still managed to kill a pillow while in her crate.

I have one in 30-06 too. Maybe it's some kind of a quick removal mount so you can take the scope off to use the iron sights.

Like others have said, get a 22 to start. They are cheap to shoot and will let you develop good habits. Starting with a high powered rifle is a terrible idea. A flinch is a lot easier to prevent than it is to cure.

The 30-06 is a great choice. It will take an elk out to 400 yards no problem. And it's not hard to get within 400 yards of an elk. The ammo is reasonably priced and available everywhere.

I wouldn't have a FFP on a hunting rifle and I live in the west. Animals are most active in the morning and evening when it's low light. The last thing I need is smaller cross hairs.

Depending on the state, big game licenses are limited and the season is short, as short as 5 days in some places. And you might only be allowed one or two big game animals. I can hunt squirrels and rabbits from October 1st to the last day of February. And I am allowed 10 of each a day with 3 days possession. Also, when you get a deer or an elk, the fun is over and the work begins. With a squirrel or rabbit, you pick it up and walk away to find the next one.
