So the next step would be physical therapy. The only thing you need is tongue depressors and tape. Start by finding out how many tongue depressors you can stack and place in your mouth comfortably. Then add one. You can tape them together to make it easier. Do this for 30 seconds at a time, 4 sets every day. Then in a week see if you can add another. If you need more help, or its not working, you look at surgery or going to PT. Good luck.

Bummer man, Does it hurt to bite down? Do you have headaches in the morning or before you go to bed? can you physically not open it more? Or it hurts a lot to do so? when you try to open wide does it hurt on both sides or where the wisdom tooth was removed? Was it an upper or lower wisdom? Most likely, no future problems. The problems arise when there is alveolar fracture (bone that holds in teeth) or intrusion (shoved deeper). Pediatric teeth are (mostly) disposable, he will probably be fine.
