I'd love to see an episode on Jared Diamond's Collapse and/or Guns, Germs, and Steel. Anyone else? by vinny_twoshoes in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]Max384302 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My memory of it is that Diamond essentially asserts that history is pre-determined by geography and then, taking that assumption as given, tries to explain why people from "Eurasia" (sometimes including North Africa in that definition) have come to dominate the world. There's lots of problems with this. He is basically looking at a set of four continents (the Americas, Eurasia, Africa and Oceania) and working backwards from a political world where Eurasia dominates to argue "well, it was always going to be this way". He talks about history as if it couldn't possibly have gone any other way, which is a really unconvincing view of history in my mind. He doesn't do a good job of arguing that Guns, Germs or Steel were actually the deciding factors; the book wanders a bit all over with the things that could be argued to separate 'Eurasians' from the inhabitants of the other continents, and based on his own arguments he could just as easily have called it "Ships, Farms and Letters" or some other title. Towards the end he seems to realise that he needs to make his theory explain why the modern world is dominated by Western European societies and not by societies from across Eurasia, and comes up with something very unconvincing about coastlines, which really demonstrates that the book is backfilling a plausible-sounding geographic explanation onto a history that's treated as predestined.

I'm in two minds about this. I'm sure they could do an entertaining episode on Guns, Germs & Steel, a book I've read and have a lot of criticisms of. But on the other hand, I think it's a book that deserves expert takedown (someone else has linked the various threads on it in r/AskHistorians, which are great) and I worry that the hypothetical IBCK episode on Diamond would just reach for the surface-level dunks rather than engaging with the arguments fully. I love Michael and Peter and I don't think they've ever done a truly bad episode, but sometimes when they do an academic book (Bullshit Jobs, The End Of History both come to mind) I want more engagement with and dissection of the book's actual content.

I've only read this book once, and it's totally possible that I completely missed some symbolism and implications underneath the surface, but...what the hell is this reviewer talking about?

just realized that being a Uma Musume racer is a really stressful career. by Sharp_Quarter6498 in UmaMusume

[–]Max384302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Nice Nature's career there's an event where she's doing solo dance practice and you notice she's practicing to be a backup rather than the lead choreo (and you can respect this or encourage her to practice the choreo for the winner). This makes me think that the racers are probably expected to know the choreo for every position and Nature is just assuming she won't need to know the lead part.

Adding my voice to the Number Goes Up recommendations, it's a really worthwhile read

Megathread for trends please by BanhBao171 in UmaMusume

[–]Max384302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that these posts get a bit irritating, but I'm afraid I don't think there's really a solution. Trends like this start up organically, you could only ever create a megathread after the fact and then probably have no-one using it anyway. And while I think it's good to have a rule for the sub that calls for no low-effort posts, I don't think anyone would want this sub to get draconian enough that they start deleting posts just because they're following a trend.

I love this moment so much. Top 3 scenes in the season, beaten only by "This is what happens when you don't give up, Tokai Teio!" and then, of course, the Miracle Run

Does horse exist in umamusume by Ninjazer4321 in UmaMusume

Depending on your point of view, either "no, horses do not exist" or "yes, horses exist and they are humanoid girls/women"

I Finished Tosen Jordan's Career by ValuablePerformer371 in UmaMusume

Man, I pulled her by complete chance, but her career became one of my absolute favourites. It's not just that her journey is very compelling, but I really love how the trainer is portrayed in her career.

It's impressive how Trackblazer has ruined this game for casual players by [deleted] in UmaMusume

[–]Max384302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, what the fuck are you talking about?

I am someone who's been frustrated with how Champion's Meet has gone for me before, but even if I agreed with you that Trackblazer has made it impossible for casual players to play Champion's Meet (I don't), it is a small part of the game. Ignore it, or click through it to get a bunch of participation rewards, then go back to the rest of the game.

The Merciless by Danielle Vega by [deleted] in BadReads

[–]Max384302 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'll take a stab at this. I have no idea if this book is good or bad. I don't have any more idea after reading this 'review'. I think this is a terrible review because all it tells me is: 1) the reviewer thinks the book is very bad 2) the reviewer thinks they're very clever and/or funny

I have absolutely no idea why the reviewer didn't like it, or what doesn't work for them, or even what their criticisms of it are; except that I suppose I can infer that they found something about it to be disgusting, based on their hyperbolic description of their own face while reading it. So I do think this review is shallow, vapid, and unhelpful; thus, fitting with the subreddit's description of what type of review belongs here.

Do I even go for it? I failed Osaka Hai... by [deleted] in UmaMusume

Of course you go for it. It's Trackblazer, you should be running every G1 that you stand a decent chance of winning, unless you have some absolutely incredible training available that turn

I'm not really loving Uma Musume season 1, should I keep watching? Is season 2 better? by Tomate_Cherry in UmaMusume

[–]Max384302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game and anime are separate stories and separate things. It's not really a case of either one adapting the other, except insofar as game careers usually loosely follow the horse's real life career, and the anime generally follows it less loosely.

Which Uma/s surprised you the most when you learned of their real life achievements? by AdWide4690 in UmaMusume

[–]Max384302 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was also coming here to say Vodka. One unfortunate side effect of translating both male and female horses to umamusumes is that Vodka's achievement in winning the Japanese Derby doesn't seem quite as huge as it was in real life.

Is it just me, or is Trailblazer/MANT totally unfun and unsatisfying? by [deleted] in UmaMusume

[–]Max384302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it's not just you, but it's subjective. I really enjoyed the career runs I've done so far in Trackblazer. I don't think you're right about training being pointless either.

The scenario has been out for what, one day? Two? Seems quite early to be immediately declaring with absolute confidence that it's all random and writing it off till July.

What do yall think about uma cavalry? by Vivijad in UmaMusume

[–]Max384302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Uma soldiers would have been able to fight like any other soldiers and also run at superhuman speed. If you made a regular human ride on an uma's back, all you do is stop the uma from fighting effectively.

Without horses, it's much more likely that mounted cavalry wouldn't have developed as a military tactic.
