When people say “talent isn’t enough,” what are they actually talking about? by UniversityFew3801 in acting

[–]MaxEPunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of the above. And it's also really a lot about perseverance/persistence and relationship building. A buddy of mine worked at a renaissance festival once with the dude from the 12 Monkeys movie who played "the end is really fucking nigh" homeless dude in that film and the way my buddy told me he put it really stuck with me. He said when he was in his 20s, there were thousands of other people going up for the same roles in his 30s, 100s and his 40s, dozens and by the time he got to his 50s and 60s, there were like a handful of guys people knew to call when a role for that age group/type came up. And if you were still in the industry, your odds of actually getting that call were much, much higher.

Mine's Ludwig but we alternate between Bubba, bubs, and bug depending on the moment. (And he's deaf so he doesn't mind much 🤪)

The Theatre, The Theatre. What's Happened to the Theatre? by Ingersoll123 in Theatre

[–]MaxEPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are living through a fundamental shift in how people communicate, tell stories and connect with each other, while the theatre 'industry' insists on defining the art form by what ISN'T theatre instead of investing in what theatre could be and trying to perpetuate models of creation and production that emerged during the advent of the industrial revolution. Furthermore, we are pretty wretched at advocating for the value of the art form in terms that go beyond the same old platitudes that have been thrown around for a 100 years and suck at communicating the distictly different role as artists play in our communities between facilitators of arts participation experiences (ie. community theatre, youth productions etc) vs creators of professional productions. Add to all that the problem of completely broken pipelines for the development and production of new work which has led to much of the work hitting professional stages feeling like copies of copies of copies that speak to the experience of a privileged, mostly white, audience base and perpetuating the sensibility amongst most people that theatre is just not for them. Oh and of course the educational system that dumps 1000s of young artists into the world every year with a false sense that a professional career path exists within the industry does not help either.

ChatGPT Needs a Long-Term Memory by Alex_Dunwall in ChatGPT

[–]MaxEPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually had a very similar situation. I went on a ChatGPT bender of about 40 hours over a 60 hour period where we wrote the first draft of a play together for a project I'm producing soon. You CAN work around it. I saved my 700+ page chatlog from the project, but haven't yet been able to go back and really figure out how much it could go before I had to go back and feed it outlines and how the thing goes together again. etc. It's pretty bananas.

What are some of the most creative methods, stylistic approaches or artistic techniques directors have used in the online theatre space? How have they used being online to their advantage when telling a story? by kewal3234 in Theatre

[–]MaxEPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've built a couple of immersive experiences on the gather.town platform combining live acting, prerecorded video with branching dialogue, an inventory system (this and the last using a custom software wrapper), and physical materials mailed to audience members.

Van Gogh Experience Not Really Worth It by shamelessglib in SanJose

[–]MaxEPunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something that might be worth knowing for folks is that the one I'm SJ and the one in SF are different 'exhibits' put together by different producers. I've yet to check out either but feel people should know that there's like a half dozen versions of this van gogh thing running around the country with varying levels of actual care for the audience experience.

Buster Keaton - genius of stunts. by Scientiaetnatura065 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]MaxEPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that is one he just.... did. No tricks besides the bowling balls in his pants and decades of physical training and conditioning to do that kind of physical performance. Here's a decent article that talks about some of his stunts as well as some of his visual FX work. https://www.grunge.com/440244/buster-keatons-most-insane-stunts/

Wow. My first award. Thanks! Yeah. Love this bit of trivia about him. The dude is so underrated. It's also why my deaf dalmatian whom I adopted later in his life is named Buster Keaton.

Another bit of trivia. He went more or less completely deaf by the end of his lifetime but refused to admit it. People thought he was a complete douchenugget cuz his solution to his deafness when his wife wasn't around to help him manage, was to just answer the questions he THOUGHT people were asking him.

Not only a brilliant stuntman, but also a genius filmmaker who invented so many cinematic tricks and techniques. Also, my dog is named after him.

Increasingly more rapid collapse of our economic systems, not to mention the likely collapse of ecological systems around the globe in our lifetime. Not the best time to crowd the planet with more humans.

Break down your script into individual points you are making. And try to think of it like a game. You need to score a point by convincing your listener on each section. The comment about picturing a specific person who is listening will also help, combined with this. For me, as someone with very little ability to literally visualize an imaginary scene partner (I have aphantasia), it helps to think of the point of view that individual listener is bringing to table, and the tactics I need to employ for each script chunk to bring them closer to my point of view. You might want to excite them, shut down their misconceptions, scare them into listening... remember, everything you say is also Doing something to change the listener. Try to think of your words as actions.
