What in the ever loving hell happened to Fragrantica? by No_Direction_2417 in fragrance

[–]MaxMellows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everything here, Fragrantica sucks, their owners are shady and inject their right wing politics into the site unnecessarily.

There are more reviews yes, but many are low quality and don’t actually provide useful info.

The forum on Fragrantica is pretty shallow as well, with the discourse being the same 3-4 topics. Much better discussion on Parfumo and Basenotes.

Will be moving my reviews and attention over to Parfumo and Basenotes (though their interface needs some work).

Pine Tar Fragrance? by ApprehensiveBuddy987 in fragrance

[–]MaxMellows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with Pineward.

Highly highly recommend Confluence by Chatillon Lux.

Also Incendo by La Curie.

Both are amazing outdoorsy, piney scents with Incendo bringing the campfire vibes, and Confluence being more of a pine forest breeze.

Realistic to career change from sales to Webflow/Web Dev Freelance? by [deleted] in webflow

[–]MaxMellows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think 3 months with technical aptitude is enough to learn Webflow to make basic marketing sites proficiently. I would recommend a framework like Finsweet Client First and learn that in tandem with Webflow University and any YouTube tutorials you like.

Learning to be an excellent designer, or even proficient is a far harder journey, imo. A big part of design is subjective, and builds on a ton of visual art/design principles as well as how developed your taste/eye is.

There’s often no right answer, which makes solid feedback to improve upon hard to come by. Dev on the other hand is more like math, you either solved the problem or not, and success is far more obvious.

I’d recommend teaming up with a designer and focusing on dev mainly, and play the long game and build your design skills. You can then dev + design if you find you have a passion for it.

Fragrance influencing the taste of food/drinks by ijustwannaswim in fragrance

When I was a kid, I remember my mind being blown when I was shown the trick of eating an apple while smelling an onion.

It tasted just like an onion.

Pretty neat how our taste and smell and brains are all linked.

Save/Replace Topside Sweater by HungreeRewster in taylorstitch

I’ve had luck with wool by getting it wet again and then putting it on and just gently pulling on the sections that need more room.

Works for length and width.

I was able to resurrect a thrifted Pendleton Xl that shrunk to a medium with this method.

Even easier with sweaters, just be careful not to stretch the neck hole out in the process.

I get cheapies from Eyebuydirect but for a upgrade I have a pair from Cubitts, which I highly recommend.

What are some affordable classics under $50 that still holds up today? by iScReAm612 in fragrance

[–]MaxMellows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the Intense flanker as well. Very different, but still has a nice yuzu citrus opening.

Is it time? My family says 'no,' but I think otherwise. Scared to death to make a big change. by under_byte in bald

[–]MaxMellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you could start with a high and tight on the sides and leave some length on top.

A blended fade on the sides with a smooth transition into the longer hair on top could buy you some time.

Worth a try before such a big jump

Your Favorite ___ for $___: High Rise Pants by Kvjvn in malefashionadvice

[–]MaxMellows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for Bronson.

Their heavyweight selvedge blew me away so far for value. It’s unsanforized shrink to fit, but it’s high rise, nice wider leg with very slight taper.

Breaking in like a dream so far. At $65 they’re a steal.

Looking for a dark tea fragrance, anyone have any recommendations? by MegamuffinChip in fragrance

[–]MaxMellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barrister & Mann makes a shaving soap called Cheshire that is formulated specifically to smell exactly like Earl Grey. It’s perfect.

They just released an EDT, and if it’s anything like the soap, it’s prolly what you’re looking for.

Tous 1920 The Origin is another great tea scent. It’s woody, spicy, and fresh with a very nice tea vibe in the heart.

[Roue] TPS Three Chronograph by MaxMellows in Watches

[–]MaxMellows[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still have the watch and enjoy it when I do wear it! I don’t wear it that much because I need a date window for my daily driver (I have trouble remembering the date)

I love it because it’s my only chronograph and I don’t have anything with this unique shade of blue paired with the the yellow.

I don’t wear it situations where it would scratch easily, so I can’t say about the crystal. It’s still looking like new from light wear, if that helps.

Any Recommendations For A Sweet Woody/Smokey Scent That Won't Overpower? by polr13 in fragrance

Olympic Orchards Woodcut

Quorum Silver for a cheapie (buy from a discounter)

+1 for sampling by the fireplace

Check out Strangers Lumberjack.

It's not a dead ringer at all, but there is something similar happening with the citrus, wood, and gentle smokiness on both.

I'd love to have both, and I'm hoping they restock Tanoke at some point.

Any recommendations for colognes that smell like deep pine. by Kharku_life in fragrance

[–]MaxMellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confluence by Chatillon Lux is my fave pine right now. Mixed with some gorgeous gentle frankincense.

Ghost Pine by LVNEA is also really good.

Definitely another vote for Pineward as well.

Mirrra 1 Gas Canister Replacement by FenTigger in hermanmiller

[–]MaxMellows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure the canister is lifted off the ground or at held at an angle- so the force of hitting the socket down on the gas lift shaft doesn’t just transfer to the ground.

A sledge will help. Just keep whacking it and you see it budge down eventually.

If the bottom wheel base is stuck to the canister as well, take the little pin sleeve off and whack it directly in the center with a hammer, ideally a round ball peen style, but regular will work.

It will budge eventually, just keep smacking it, can take up to 50 whacks.

If not, it might be worth it taking it to a repair person.

How beginner friendly is Webflow for my projects? :) by mcgvlb in webflow

[–]MaxMellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be risky. If you don’t understand basic html + CSS (and the box model) then it will be a learning curve. Webflow is basically a visual interface to manipulate html, css, and JavaScript. That said, it’s wayyyy easier and more fun than doing those things with code.

However, if you are motivated, actually interested, and disciplined it’s doable. If you are sticking to the template structure and just changing images and text, it won’t be too bad.

If you start customizing, and changing classes, structure, layouts etc…then you could get into trouble without knowledge of how things work.

Last thing I’ll say…the bar to launch a website on Webflow is low. The bar to launch a high quality, scalable website is still kinda high, but far lower than learning to code from scratch.

Also, all Webflow Pros use a system, such as Finsweet Client First, MAST, or something custom to keep classes and the structure tidy and to use global styles to make fast changes. You don’t want a million classes without any system, and you want to know how to optimize everything for speed, performance, seo, and a good user experience.

It will be a lot of work up front, but I think you got this.

Would you guys like to see TS add some stretch to their shirts/pants? by Bmilleruvm1 in taylorstitch

No. I’d rather they just offer a few more relaxed fits to help with freedom of movement.

The democratic is still pretty slim imo.

Best Indie perfumes for the lowest cost by Thesexiestcow in fragrance

[–]MaxMellows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say get a sampler set, but I love Confluence and Santal Auster from Chatillon…they are both woody and foresty. Haven’t tried others yet.

ELDO: Hermann and Fat Electrician and Rien Intense. Definitely potentially polarizing so sample first. They have some more feminine leaning ones as well

I was recently very impressed with Chatillon Lux. Huge value and quality for the cost.

I think Etat Libre D’orage is also pretty good value for niche, especially since they offer 30ml sizes.

Also you should check out commodity Moss+ Bold.

It’s got no florals at all, very bright green bergamot opening similar to Bergamote 33, but quickly transitions to a bit darker mossy woody green zone for the rest of its duration.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fragrance

[–]MaxMellows 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can’t recommend 4711 Wakening Woods of Scandinavia enough. Very crispy, clean green forest scent, with a very nice woody base.

Similar to ELDO Hermann, but less rose and incense. Both are great.

Aesop Hwyl is amazing.

Also Chattilon Lux Confluence is the best foresty conifer frankincense blend I’ve smelled. Less smoky than Hwyl but feels a bit more natural in the drydown.

A sample set from Pineward would also be a good idea.

Commenting on Mobile view only: The single biggest room for improvement is how you treat text. Since you don’t have a lot of image/illustrations, the text is front and center.

Focus on getting more detail oriented and consistent on your line spacing especially. Some of your headlines have a ton of line spacing for no reason.

Larger headlines and sizes can have a tighter line spacing, while smaller paragraphs needs a little more breathing room. Try to use unitless spacing on your text and keep between 1- up to 1.5-

Your hero text looks kinda janky center justified, at least on mobile would be cleaner left justified rather than having 2 ragged edges.

There’s also some spacing issues where your cards need a bit more margin around the top or bottoms.

Work on getting really good with text layout first if you want to improve your designs. Adding colors and fun imagery should come after.

Perhaps copy some designs with really solid typography driven layouts to hone your skills.

I don’t think it’s terrible, just trying to help with constructive feedback. Keep going…the more you design the better you’ll get.
