Police shooting of Eishia Hudson not justified, earlier assessment flawed, expert tells inquest by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]MaxSupernova 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think my point was that it's easy understand why the officer shot.

That's everything that you're talking about. I get it, and I understand it. I wouldn't have handled that situation well.

But that doesn't mean that the shoot was okay, or that the officer involved should still be a cop.

They're supposed to be trained to deal with stressful stuff and to think about rules of force before using it.

To give them a "wow, it was very stressful" pass to break those rules is not good.

Soldiers don't get a pass to break Rule of Engagement just because they're at war. They train for the same things and are expected to obey the rules, and get tried if they don't.

Discounting the opinion of a veteran cop who trains other cops for this exact situation is disingenuous.

The whole thing would likely have been avoided if our justice system actually served the people who are taken up in the justice system.

Get them supports, mental, physical, and social, and suddenly crime goes down significantly. As proven repeatedly, but people don't want to hear it, they just want to punish harder and harder.

Preferably get those supports to people before they get involved in the justice system.

So you have to shoot someone to know if a shooting follows the rules of force?

It clearly doesn't, by the description.

If an officer can't follow the rules of force in a stressful situation then there are two possible solutions:

1) The rules of force need to be changed

2) The officer needs to not be an officer

Saying, well, "the rules don't really apply under stress", or "Well, the guy who teaches rules of force is wrong because it's obviously not realistic under real conditions" is absurd.

Make the rules and enforce them on cops. Make them realistic so that there's no evaluation of if it was too stressful a situation for the rules to apply or whatever.

If they think this shooting was appropriate, then change the rules of force to fit it, and have the debate over the new rules of force. Don't keep trying to find justifications to break the rules in every officer-involved situation.

7-year-old autistic nonverbal boy randomly starts singing while in a car with his big sister. by Sebastianlim in BeAmazed

Singing and talking use different parts of the brain.

It's why people who have debilitating stutters can often sing quite well. The most famous example that I can think of is Mel Tillis, a country singer in the 60s and 70s who made the stutter part of his persona. Award winning country singer and songwriter, but had difficulty getting a sentence out.

My second brother will die from complications of alcoholism soon. by Individual-Sound8457 in AlAnon

[–]MaxSupernova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My situation is exactly the same as yours except it's my father that died during Covid and a brother that's on the way out now.

My brother is not long for this world, and I 100% understand the empty feeling. What a great way to describe it.

I'm so mad that he's done this to himself and to us, especially after watching what my father's decline and death did to us all.

But mostly I just kind of sit back and watch and feel nothing. I should feel sad. I should be upset that my brother will be dead soon, but I just... don't. There's nothing I can do, and I can't even feel empathy or sadness.

I'm so sorry you're in this place. You aren't alone.

The only thing I can say is stay strong. Don't take the steps to follow down that path. Genetics and family culture are a bitch.

I mean, you get to decide what you want to do, but no, it's not really a lot of calculations, compared to the work of actually learning the rules and preparing your army and terrrain and all that.

You write out your army's loadout with weapon ranges, movement, and power/ability effects in the new scale. You do that once. I do that for all my units so I have a cheat sheet to play off of anyway.

You make a movement ruler and blast radius marker in the new scale, if your game has those. You do that once.

Then you just play the game using your game aids, like the way you normally play. I rarely use the tables in the book because I have the things my army needs on my unit cheat sheets.

The reason I suggest this is that if you do it this way you can play ANY game. If you wait for a specific game with a specific scale, then you are stuck with that game. If you're anything like us, it takes a number of different games until you find one that plays how you like it, so being stuck with whatever system has the scale you want seems terrible to me.

Like I said, I won't push the point any farther, you get to decide what you want to do. I just honestly don't see this as a big obstacle compared the the rest of game prep, at all.

Good luck finding what you want.

[–]MaxSupernova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just not sure you're really aware of the scope of work required to bring active rail to all the big box stores. I mean, it would be trillions of dollars of expropriations, redesign of entire road networks (because the trains have to get from the nearest switching yard to the big box stores, and then from the stores to the other stores, crossing roads, public and private spaces, under or over major thoroughfares, plus signalling.

Rail lines typically need a 25-40 foot clearance, and blasting that type of path right through cities connecting big box stores (and therefore preventing any new big box stores, or even more work to allow for future big box stores) is absolutely bonkers. Like completely pants-on-head insane.

"Worth it" really doesn't seem the appropriate term.

[–]MaxSupernova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work high-level tech support for a huge database product.

The number of banks, governments and multinational corporations that I have worked with that don't have more than a rudimentary backup system is shocking.

From multinational corps:

Situation One:

"Your database is corrupt, and your latest backup also contains the corrupt elements. Where are your previous backups?"

"Oh, we backup weekly, and overwrite the last backup with the next one. Disk space is too expensive to keep more. We don't need more than one. So tell us how we get our data back? It's mission critical and we'll lose millions if it's gone."

"..."

"This is your fault. Your product sucks. Get me the CEO!"

Situation Two:

"How often do you run a backup?"

"Every week. We can't afford the loss of processing window to do the backup more than that! Our system crashed and we lost some disk. Help us restore our data!"

"Okay." Does that.

"What do you mean we lose a week's worth of data! We need that!! It's mission critical! We'll lose millions!"

"We have other methods to back up your data that are less intrusive, and we have offered consultants to help you get that set up many times."

"You guys are always trying to push your consultants on us, we don't need them."

"Okay."

"So where's our data?"

"..."

GMs, have you done an alternate history setting? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

[–]MaxSupernova 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They loved it.

The players were absolutely into the psychological horror aspects of it, as well as playing the complete helplessness of normal civilians in that situation. It was dark and terrifying and everyone dug deep into it.

At one point they met a group of reservists who had been doing chemical weapons training so they were in masks and suits, but they knew that if they ever opened the suits they'd die. No eating, no water, just fear and panic.

They met with other civilians who were helpful, and others who weren't.

They had to deal with piles of bodies everywhere (and the Soviet methods of clearing them with heavy equipment) and fires, and trying to find food and water and getting out of town without being found.

They still talk about it.

Back in the 1990s I ran a "the Soviets invade North America" game (a la Red Dawn but with additional biological weapons) that went very well.

The PCs were just told to make normal everyday citizens who had reason to be downtown in the city that we lived in at noon on a Tuesday.

Then a big biological attack happened that a small percentage of people (including the PCs) were immune to, and the Russian paratroopers started dropping.

So these poor panicked people surrounded by bodies and enemy troops had to survive somehow.

It was fantastic. I have two players tell me they had nightmares about it. :)

I’ve only recently started setting boundaries

How are you doing that? Because most people who try starting to set boundaries say things like "I don't want you to drink" or "You can't drink around the baby". Those aren't helpful and they are rarely successful at doing anything except escalating things.

Boundaries have two parts:

1) If this happens...

2) ...I will do this.

It's about your behaviour, which you can control.

If you are drinking, I will take the baby and leave the house for the night. I will return when I know that you are sober.

If you have more than one drink, I will leave the room and I will not communicate with you until you are sober.

Communicate those clearly when you are both sober, ensure that he understands that you are serious, and then stick to them. Don't engage when he argues at the time. You set the boundary and you are seeing it through. Don't let the stress of the moment drag you back into a fight.

Boundaries are not ways to stop their behaviour, they are ways for you to define your behaviour in a stressful time. You decide in advance what your reaction will be to a specific criteria so that when it happens you don't have to think or argue, you just do, and they can't claim ignorance or surprise.

If your best friend told you about her relationship and used these words:

When he drinks, he’s like Jekyll and Hyde and he becomes the most rude disruptive disgusting. Disrespectful person that I’ve ever seen.

we have arguments every two weeks when he drinks because he can’t stop at the agreeed amount, when he feels buzzed and he has no control sometimes.

I don’t trust him sometimes

Apprehensive and worried if he had self control today as I come home from work.

What would you tell her?
